About St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

St George & Sutherland Shire Leader

Overview

The St George and Sutherland Shire Leader — known universally as The Leader — is a weekly newspaper serving southern Sydney, published by Australian Community Media (ACM). First published on 29 June 1960, it covers the St George district and the Sutherland Shire, from Arncliffe in the north to the upper Illawarra in the south, and from Botany Bay east to the sands of Cronulla. Serving a population approaching half a million people, it describes itself as the leading news source across all platforms in southern Sydney, and ACM promotes it as the largest-circulation community newspaper in Australia.

The paper is published weekly, in St George and Sutherland Shire editions, from its base at Kogarah. Its digital home is theleader.com.au, where its journalism appears alongside a daily digital news service.

History

The Leader was first published on Wednesday, 29 June 1960, as a weekly — and it was born from consolidation. The paper was formed by merging four smaller local newspapers: The Times, The Express, The District and Shire News, and The Kingsgrove Riverwood Courier. The merger created a paper with immediate scale: by 1961 it had a circulation of 81,000 free weekly copies plus another 1,000 sold, ran 48 to 56 pages, and employed two sub-editors, four reporters, a photographer, a columnist, and outside contributors.

In 1984 The Leader moved to twice-weekly publication, on Tuesdays and Thursdays — a mark of the paper's strength in an era when suburban newspapers were among the most profitable publications in the country. The late 1980s and 1990s were a golden age: Goan Kenyan-born journalist Cyprian Fernandes edited the paper for around a decade, presiding over a newsroom of 20 journalists at a time when regional newspapers were flourishing. Fernandes introduced colour to the layouts, and under his editorship The Leader won Newspaper of the Year — the industry's recognition of a suburban paper operating at the highest level.

The paper's 60th anniversary, in June 2020, was marked in the New South Wales Parliament: on 30 July 2020, the state Member for Miranda, Eleni Petinos, moved a motion congratulating the publication "on a fantastic 60 years," naming the editorial team of Craig Thomson, Murray Trembath, John Veage, Merryn Porter, and Chris Lane. Parliamentary congratulations for a community newspaper's birthday are rare — a measure of how deeply The Leader is embedded in the civic life of southern Sydney.

Ownership has followed the consolidation of the Australian regional press. The paper is now owned by Australian Community Media, the country's largest regional publisher, formed from the Fairfax regional assets. ACM's brand site describes the Leader's territory as stretching from Arncliffe in the north, south to the upper reaches of the Illawarra, and east to Botany Bay and the sands of Cronulla — and claims its circulation as the largest of any community newspaper in Australia.

Content and Sections

The Leader covers the full range of community-newspaper journalism for southern Sydney. Local news leads: the councils of the district — Georges River, Bayside, and the Sutherland Shire, the latter famously parochial and proudly insular — state politics in the marginal seats of the St George area and the Shire, and the development battles of a region where the suburban dream meets Sydney's housing crisis.

Sport is central to the paper's identity. Rugby league dominates: the St George Illawarra Dragons, the joint venture that carries the district's football soul, command devoted coverage, and the Shire's beloved Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks — 2016 premiers, ending a half-century wait — are followed with equal intensity. Junior sport, surf lifesaving along the Cronulla beaches, sailing on Botany Bay and Port Hacking, and community sport complete the offering.

Business, entertainment, and lifestyle coverage reflects the district's village high streets and beach culture: dining in Cronulla and Brighton-Le-Sands, the arts and culture of the St George area, and the events calendar of the Shire. Council information, community notices, and the comings and goings of neighbourhood life fill out the paper in the community-press tradition, and the paper sponsors many local events — the civic engagement that ACM cites as central to the brand.

The Leader's patch includes some of the most storied local identities in Australian civic life. The Sutherland Shire's parochial pride — the "Shire" as a state of mind, beach-obsessed and defiantly local — has made the district a byword for suburban tribalism, never more so than during the Cronulla riots of December 2005, which the Leader covered as the local paper of record for a community at the centre of a national convulsion. St George's identity is older and more layered: the district of the 1950s and 1960s migrant boom, where Greek, Macedonian, and later Chinese and Nepalese communities reshaped the suburbs around Hurstville and Kogarah. The Leader's pages have documented that transformation across six decades — the restaurants of Forest Road, the temples and churches, the festivals — alongside the eternal constants of Dragons football and Shire beaches.

Coverage and Audience

The Leader serves the St George and Sutherland Shire districts of southern Sydney — a population the paper puts at approaching 500,000 people (ACM's brand material cites almost 450,000; the paper's own about page cites over 423,832). The territory runs from Arncliffe and the inner-south suburbs through Hurstville, Kogarah, and Rockdale, across the Georges River into the Sutherland Shire — Cronulla, Miranda, Caringbah, Engadine, Menai — and south toward the Illawarra.

The audience is the great southern-Sydney mainstream: the "Shire" identity is one of the strongest local brands in Australia — famously parochial, beach-loving, and loyal — while St George's multicultural suburbs add the district's diversity. The paper publishes in two editions, St George and Sutherland Shire, recognising that the river between them is a cultural as well as a geographic boundary. Published weekly on Wednesdays, the paper is the district's shared civic forum: the place where southern Sydney reads about itself.

Ownership

The St George and Sutherland Shire Leader is owned by Australian Community Media (ACM), Australia's largest regional and community newspaper publisher. ACM was formed from the regional publishing assets of Fairfax Media and now publishes more than 100 regional and community titles across the country, from the Newcastle Herald to The Canberra Times to the community papers of suburban Sydney.

Within ACM, The Leader is a flagship community title — the company's brand material presents it as the largest-circulation community newspaper in Australia, and its southern-Sydney territory as one of the most valuable community-publishing franchises in the country. The paper operates from Kogarah in the St George district, with its journalism feeding both the weekly print editions and the daily digital service.

Digital Presence

The Leader's digital home is theleader.com.au, where its journalism appears as a daily digital news service alongside the weekly print editions. The site carries local news, sport, weather, entertainment, and lifestyle coverage for the St George and Sutherland districts, supported by a Weekly Wrap email newsletter rounding up the best local stories. The paper is active on social media — its Facebook page, under the Sutherland Shire St George News identity, has attracted more than 60,000 likes — where breaking southern-Sydney news is published between editions.

The title's 65-year print run is preserved in the National Library of Australia's newspaper collections, documenting the transformation of southern Sydney from postwar suburbia to twenty-first-century metropolis. For the district, The Leader remains what its 1960 founders intended: the paper of St George and the Shire, in print on Wednesdays and online every day — the civic chronicle of Sydney's south.
