Star Maa Gold
Star Maa Gold is a Telugu-language movie channel owned by JioStar, the joint venture between Viacom18 and Disney India. The channel airs Telugu films round the clock, with an emphasis on older and classic movies, complementing the flagship movie channel Star Maa Movies. Its history is unusually varied: it began life in 2011 as MAA Junior, a children's channel; was relaunched in 2012 as MAA Gold, a youth-skewing general entertainment channel; and was repositioned as a movie channel in March 2018 after being brought under the Star Maa brand. Today it is one of the two Telugu movie channels in the JioStar portfolio.
Overview and Channel Identity
Star Maa Gold is a 24-hour Telugu pay television channel dedicated to movies. Unlike its sister channel Star Maa Movies, which focuses on recent blockbusters and premieres with a library of more than 800 films, Star Maa Gold typically airs older Telugu movies, giving the network's film library a second window and viewers a steady diet of classic and library titles. The channel broadcasts in Telugu and is distributed across direct-to-home, cable and IPTV platforms in India as well as to the Telugu diaspora internationally.
Origins as MAA Junior in 2011
The channel's story begins on 4 February 2011, when MAA Television Network launched two new channels: MAA Movies, focused on films, and MAA Junior, focused on children. MAA Junior was the network's attempt at a dedicated kids' channel in Telugu, launched alongside the movie channel as part of the network's expansion from two channels to four. Coinciding with the launch, film actor Ram Charan was inducted as a director on the board of the company. However, the children's channel had a short life: MAA Junior ceased operations on 25 January 2012, less than a year after its launch.
Relaunch as MAA Gold in 2012
Following the closure of MAA Junior, the channel was relaunched as MAA Gold in February 2012. Unlike its predecessor, MAA Gold was positioned as a trendy general entertainment channel with a focus on the urban and youth audience. Its content mix broke with the usual GEC pattern: non-fiction content occupied the prime-time slots, while fiction was placed in non-prime-time hours. The network launched the channel with the support of the MAA Music Awards event in Hyderabad, and presented it as a channel for the social media generation, with innovative programmes designed to appeal to younger viewers. With this launch, the MAA network's bouquet stood at four channels: MAA TV, MAA Music, MAA Movies and MAA Gold.
The Star India Acquisition
In February 2015, Star India acquired the broadcast business of MAA Television Network for an estimated 2,000 to 2,500 crore rupees. At the time of the acquisition, Nimmagadda Prasad held a 65 percent stake in the company, Chiranjeevi and his family owned 20 percent, and Nagarjuna held 10 percent. The deal brought all four MAA channels into the Star network, including MAA Gold, which continued to operate as a general entertainment channel in the initial years after the acquisition.
Rebrand to Star Maa Gold in 2017
The Star Maa brand consolidation unfolded in two stages. On 13 February 2017, the flagship MAA TV was rebranded as Star Maa with a new logo. Then, on 25 June 2017, the sister channels were rechristened under the Star Maa umbrella: MAA Music became Star Maa Music, MAA Movies became Star Maa Movies (with a new HD feed, Star Maa Movies HD), and MAA Gold became Star Maa Gold. The rebrand gave the Telugu bouquet a unified identity with refreshed logos and graphics. At the time, Star Maa Gold was still positioned as a general entertainment channel with a difference — aiming to provide an alternative viewing experience to the mainline GECs by exploring genres such as action, mythology, crime, comedy, reality and movies rather than the daily soaps that dominated rival channels.
Repositioning as a Movie Channel in 2018
A few months after the 2017 rebrand, Star Maa Gold was repositioned as a dedicated movie channel in March 2018. The move followed a pattern established elsewhere in the Star network, where secondary channels were converted into movie outlets to monetise film libraries — similar to the earlier transformation of Star Suvarna Plus in Kannada, and later mirrored by Asianet Plus in Malayalam and Vijay Super in Tamil. As a movie channel, Star Maa Gold settled into its current role: airing Telugu films through the day, usually older titles, as a complement to Star Maa Movies' premiere-led schedule.
Programming: Classic Telugu Cinema
The channel's programming is built around its library of Telugu films, with an emphasis on older movies that give viewers a steady rotation of familiar titles. Its schedule features films across genres — action, family drama, comedy and mythology — reflecting the breadth of the Telugu film industry's output over the decades. The channel serves audiences who prefer classic and library films over the latest premieres, a segment that remains substantial in the Telugu television market. During festive periods, the channel participates in JioStar's network-wide programming events alongside its sister channels.
The 2020 Rebrand
On 6 September 2020, during the grand launch of the fourth season of Bigg Boss Telugu, Star Maa introduced new logos and graphics across all its channels, including Star Maa Gold. The refreshed identity added the Star wordmark to the channel logos and rendered the word "Maa" in Telugu script. An earlier logo refresh had also been introduced in April 2019. These periodic visual overhauls have kept the channel's on-air presentation aligned with the broader Star network's design language through the Disney India years and into the JioStar era.
Relationship with Star Maa Movies
Star Maa Gold operates as the companion to Star Maa Movies, the network's flagship Telugu movie channel. Star Maa Movies, launched as MAA Movies on 4 February 2011, focuses on recent blockbusters and television premieres with a library of more than 800 films, and it has frequently ranked as the leading Telugu movie channel. Star Maa Gold complements it by airing older films, giving the network two distinct movie windows: premieres and recent hits on Star Maa Movies, and library and classic titles on Star Maa Gold. Together, the two channels compete with rival Telugu movie channels including Gemini Movies, Zee Cinemalu and ETV Cinema.
The JioStar Era
Star Maa Gold is today part of JioStar, the joint venture formed by the combination of Viacom18 and Disney India's media businesses. The merger united the Star Maa bouquet with Viacom18's regional portfolio under a single corporate umbrella, making JioStar one of the dominant broadcasters in the Telugu market. Within the combined company's Telugu offering, Star Maa Gold continues to serve as the library movie channel, and its content is available through JioHotstar, the JioStar streaming platform, alongside the network's other Telugu channels.
A Channel of Many Lives
Star Maa Gold is distributed as a pay television channel across direct-to-home, cable and IPTV platforms in India, with its core audience in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The channel is also carried internationally for the Telugu diaspora, including on Dish TV and IPTV platforms in the United States and on cable and IPTV services in Singapore, Malaysia and the Gulf. Its programming is additionally available on JioHotstar, extending the channel's film library to streaming audiences.
Few Indian television channels have changed identity as often as Star Maa Gold. In the space of seven years it went from a children's channel (MAA Junior, 2011–2012) to a youth general entertainment channel (MAA Gold, 2012–2017), to a Star-branded alternative GEC (Star Maa Gold, 2017–2018), and finally to the Telugu movie channel it is today. Each transformation reflected a strategic read of the Telugu market by its owners — first the MAA network's expansion, then Star India's consolidation, and finally the network-wide move to dedicated movie channels. Its current form as a classic-film destination gives it a stable, durable role within the Star Maa bouquet.
