About Star Maa Music

Star Maa Music

Star Maa Music is a Telugu-language music television channel owned by JioStar, the joint venture between Viacom18 and Disney India. Launched in 2008 as MAA Music, it is the only music channel currently operated by JioStar. The channel plays Telugu film songs and independent music alongside music-based shows, and it serves as the music destination within the Star Maa network, complementing the general entertainment channel Star Maa and the movie channels Star Maa Movies and Star Maa Gold.

Overview and Channel Identity

Star Maa Music is a 24-hour pay television channel dedicated to Telugu music. Its core programming consists of Telugu film songs — from current chartbusters to evergreen classics — along with independent and non-film music, music-based shows and celebrity-led music programming. The channel's brand proposition has been described as the "flipside of music", aiming to resonate with everything that relates to music in the lives of its viewers. Within the Star Maa bouquet, it is the network's dedicated music outlet, positioned to reach young consumers and entertain them through music-led content.

Origins: The MAA Television Network

The channel's roots lie in MAA Television Network, the corporate entity founded in 2001 by Penmetsa Murali Krishnam Raju. Its flagship channel, MAA TV, was launched in April 2002 as a pay channel with 18 hours of programming a day, backed by an initial investment of 25 crore rupees. The network grew steadily through the 2000s: in March 2006, Nimmagadda Prasad, together with film stars Chiranjeevi and Nagarjuna, became promoters by acquiring a 60 percent stake. MAA Music was launched as the network's second channel, and the bouquet later expanded with MAA Movies and MAA Junior in February 2011 and MAA Gold in February 2012, making MAA TV a major Telugu television network with four channels.

Launch as MAA Music in 2008

MAA Music was launched on 30 May 2008 as the second channel of the MAA Television Network. At the time, the Telugu television market had a limited number of dedicated music channels, and MAA Music filled the gap with a schedule built around Telugu film songs, music videos and music-based programming. The channel benefited from the Telugu film industry's prolific output of songs, which gave it a deep and constantly refreshed library. Its launch established the MAA network as a multi-channel player in the Telugu market, with a general entertainment flagship and a dedicated music channel.

Programming: Songs and Music Shows

The channel's programming revolves around Telugu film music, the dominant force in the state's music consumption. Its schedule includes song countdowns, thematic song blocks, and shows built around film music, alongside coverage of music launches and audio functions from the Telugu film industry. In the period leading up to its 2017 rebrand, the channel reported healthy viewership growth, with new programmes such as Connect and Restart cited as contributors to that growth. These shows reflected the channel's effort to move beyond pure song telecasts into hosted, interactive music programming aimed at younger audiences.

The Star India Acquisition

In February 2015, Star India acquired the broadcast business of MAA Television Network for an estimated 2,000 to 2,500 crore rupees, one of the largest regional television deals of its time. At the time of the acquisition, Nimmagadda Prasad held a 65 percent stake in the company, Chiranjeevi and his family owned 20 percent, and Nagarjuna held 10 percent. The deal brought the entire MAA bouquet — MAA TV, MAA Music, MAA Movies and MAA Gold — into the Star network, giving Star a commanding position in the Telugu market to complement its strength in other South Indian languages.

Rebrand to Star Maa Music in 2017

On 13 February 2017, MAA TV was rebranded as Star Maa with a new logo. On 25 June 2017, the network's sister channels followed: MAA Music, MAA Gold and MAA Movies were rechristened as Star Maa Music, Star Maa Gold and Star Maa Movies, with a high-definition feed, Star Maa Movies HD, added to the bouquet. The rebrand unified the Telugu channels under the Star Maa umbrella with refreshed identities. The network announced that the rebranded channels would ramp up their content with bigger and better viewing experiences, and Star Maa Music specifically aimed to reach young consumers and entertain them more through its music-led proposition.

The 2020 Rebrand

On 6 September 2020, during the grand launch of the fourth season of Bigg Boss Telugu, Star Maa introduced a new logo and graphics package across all its channels, including Star Maa Music. The refreshed identity added the Star wordmark to the channel logos and rendered the word "Maa" in Telugu script, replacing the earlier wordmark. The rebrand was part of a network-wide visual overhaul that aligned the Telugu bouquet's on-air identity with the broader Star network's design language.

JioStar's Only Music Channel

Star Maa Music holds a distinctive position as the only music channel currently operated by JioStar. The joint venture between Viacom18 and Disney India brought together vast general entertainment, movie and sports portfolios, but the Telugu music channel stands alone in the music genre within the combined company. This makes it a unique asset: a single-genre channel serving the Telugu music audience within one of India's largest broadcast networks, drawing on the deep library of Telugu film music accumulated over more than a decade and a half on air.

The Telugu Music Television Market

Telugu music television is driven overwhelmingly by film music, reflecting the centrality of songs in Telugu cinema. The market for dedicated music channels in Telugu has historically been smaller than in some other languages, with music programming often folded into general entertainment channels. Star Maa Music's longevity — on air since 2008 — testifies to the durability of a dedicated music offering backed by a major network. The channel competes for the music audience with programming blocks on other Telugu channels and, increasingly, with digital music streaming platforms and YouTube, where Telugu film songs command enormous viewership.

Distribution and Availability

Star Maa Music is distributed as a pay television channel across direct-to-home, cable and IPTV platforms in India, with its core audience in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The channel is also available to the Telugu diaspora through international distribution on cable, DTH and IPTV platforms in markets including the United States, Singapore, Malaysia and the Gulf. Its content additionally reaches digital audiences through JioHotstar, the JioStar streaming platform, extending the channel's music programming beyond the linear broadcast. The channel also maintains a presence on social media and video platforms, where clips of its music programming and song segments reach viewers who consume Telugu film music primarily on their phones.

Legacy in Telugu Television

With more than a decade and a half on air, Star Maa Music is one of the longest-running Telugu music channels. It has survived the consolidation of the Telugu television industry — from its origins in the independent MAA Television Network through the Star India acquisition to the JioStar era — while retaining its core identity as a music channel. Its journey from MAA Music to Star Maa Music mirrors the broader transformation of Telugu television, in which regional networks built by local entrepreneurs were absorbed into national broadcast groups, and its continued presence as JioStar's only music channel underscores the enduring appeal of Telugu film music on television.
