About Starkenburger Echo

Starkenburger Echo

The Starkenburger Echo is the Starkenburg local edition of the Darmstädter Echo, the regional daily newspaper serving Darmstadt and southern Hesse, Germany. Published by the Echo Zeitungen GmbH, which is part of the VRM media group, it appears Monday to Saturday with local pages dedicated to the Starkenburg region, the historic territory south of Darmstadt centred on the Bergstraße district, combined with the Darmstädter Echo's comprehensive regional, national and international coverage. The Echo group's headquarters are at Holzhofallee 25-31 in Darmstadt, and its content appears on the echo-online.de portal.

Overview

The Starkenburger Echo is one of the local editions through which the Echo Zeitungen cover southern Hesse, alongside the Darmstädter Echo for the city and the Darmstadt-Dieburg district, the Odenwälder Echo for the Odenwald district and the Rüsselsheimer Echo for the Groß-Gerau area. The Echo Zeitungen together have a sold circulation of around 50,000 copies, with the Darmstädter Echo itself selling around 26,000 copies. The papers appear six days a week in the Rhenish format, in print and as e-papers, and the echo-online.de portal serves all editions with continuously updated news. The Starkenburger Echo benefits from the group's shared editorial resources while maintaining its distinct Bergstraße identity.

The Starkenburg region is the historic territory south of Darmstadt, taking its name from the Starkenburg castle above Heppenheim, and corresponds broadly to today's Bergstraße district with its towns of Heppenheim, Bensheim, Lorsch and Lampertheim. The region is known for the Bergstraße itself, the scenic route along the western edge of the Odenwald famous for its mild climate, vineyards and orchards, and for the Hessisches Ried with its agricultural economy. The Starkenburger Echo's circulation area covers the Bergstraße district and the southern part of the Darmstadt-Dieburg district.

History

The Darmstädter Echo was the first new publication in the war-destroyed city of Darmstadt after the Second World War, with its first issue appearing on 21 November 1945. The politically unblemished writer Johann Sebastian Dang and the publicist Paul Rodemann, who had been persecuted under National Socialism, had received the licence from the American administration to publish a politically independent newspaper. Rodemann brought in the printing expert Max Bach as operations manager, and in 1947 Hans J. Reinowski became the third licensee, building up the editorial office as publisher in the following years.

The Echo Zeitungen developed their network of local editions over the post-war decades, with the Starkenburger Echo serving the Bergstraße district and the Starkenburg region under its own title. In 1986 the publishing house bought the struggling competitor Darmstädter Tagblatt, at the time the third-oldest German newspaper, making Darmstadt a one-paper district. After the takeover of the Echo Zeitungen by the VRM media group, the editorial leadership was reorganised, with Lars Hennemann taking over as editor-in-chief in August 2015; the current editor-in-chief is Frank Kaminski. The managing director is Joachim Liebler.

Coverage and Content

The Starkenburger Echo's local pages cover the Bergstraße district and the Starkenburg region. Municipal politics is a central beat, with reporting on the town councils of Heppenheim, Bensheim and the district's municipalities, the district council of the Bergstraße district, and the planning issues of a region balancing agriculture, tourism and residential growth in the Rhine-Main-Neckar triangle. The paper follows the local economy, from the vineyards and orchards of the Bergstraße to the manufacturing companies and service businesses of the district. The Hessisches Ried, the fertile plain between the Bergstraße and the Rhine, shapes the agricultural reporting, while the district's position in the Rhine-Main-Neckar triangle brings logistics, chemical industry and commuter topics into the paper's pages. The wine harvest season and the Bergstraße's spring blossom are annual fixtures of the paper's seasonal coverage.

Cultural reporting draws on the region's heritage: the Starkenburg castle above Heppenheim, the Lorsch Abbey UNESCO World Heritage site, the historic old towns of the Bergstraße, and the region's wine festivals. The paper gives extensive space to club and association life, local sports and school topics. The Darmstädter Echo's central newsroom supplies the overregional sections: news from southern Hesse, national and international news, business, culture and sports. Service elements such as event calendars, obituaries, family announcements and consumer advice complete the daily offering.

Organization and Ownership

The Starkenburger Echo is published by the Echo Zeitungen GmbH, based in Darmstadt, which is part of the VRM media group. The Echo group's headquarters are at Holzhofallee 25-31 in Darmstadt, where the Starkenburger Echo is also registered as a media company. The paper's editor-in-chief is Frank Kaminski, who leads the Echo Zeitungen's editorial operations, and the managing director is Joachim Liebler.

The Echo Zeitungen's editions share the central newsroom in Darmstadt, with local editorial teams producing the district pages for each edition. Production is centralised at the group's printing facilities, and distribution, subscription management and advertising sales are handled through the group's own organisations. The subscription share of the sold circulation is above 92 percent, reflecting the papers' deep anchoring in their regions. The echo-online.de portal provides the digital infrastructure for all editions.

Readership and Market Position

The Starkenburger Echo operates within the Echo Zeitungen's strong position as the leading newspaper group of southern Hesse, with a total sold circulation of around 50,000 copies. In the Bergstraße district the paper competes with the Bergsträßer Anzeiger, the Bensheim-based daily, creating a competitive local press landscape in the Starkenburg region. The Starkenburger Echo's market position rests on the Echo group's comprehensive regional journalism and its dedicated Starkenburg pages.

Like all German regional dailies, the Echo Zeitungen have experienced significant circulation decline, with sold circulation falling by more than half since 1998, a trend addressed through e-paper subscriptions and the echo-online.de portal. The papers' subscription share of more than 92 percent reflects exceptional reader loyalty, and the group's 80-year history as southern Hesse's independent daily gives it credibility that sustains the Starkenburg edition's market position. The paper's reputation and the group's 80-year history as southern Hesse's independent daily give it exceptional credibility in the region. The Starkenburger Echo's role as the Echo's voice for the Bergstraße district makes it the reference medium for local politics, club life and the cultural heritage of the Starkenburg region.

Digital Presence

The Starkenburger Echo's digital home is the echo-online.de portal, the Echo Zeitungen's online platform presenting continuously updated news from Darmstadt and southern Hesse. Readers can access the complete printed edition as an e-paper, and the portal's online newsroom provides regional news throughout the day. The paper reaches readers through social media channels and newsletters, and the portal's district pages give the Starkenburg content a dedicated digital presence.

The digital offering follows a subscription model, with the e-paper available as part of print subscriptions or as a standalone digital subscription. The portal's Bergstraße district pages and local newsletters keep Starkenburg readers connected to their region's news throughout the day. The combination of the daily print edition, the e-paper and the continuously updated portal serves the Bergstraße district's readers across all platforms. The integration of the Starkenburger Echo into the large echo-online.de platform gives the Starkenburg edition a modern digital infrastructure and extends its reach beyond the print circulation area. The combination of the print daily, the e-paper, the continuously updated portal and social media gives the Starkenburger Echo a comprehensive presence in the Bergstraße district's media landscape.
