About Starz TV

Overview

Starz TV was a British music television channel that broadcast from 24 January 2005 until 1 June 2020. Launched as Fizz TV and rebranded as Starz TV in March 2009, it played chart music and pop videos across a turbulent 15-year history that saw it pass through the hands of four different owners. The channel closed on 1 June 2020 under the ownership of the TRACE Group, with its content moving to a morning block on Trace Urban and "Barbie Girl" by Aqua reported as its final song, cut off partway through the video.

Starz TV's story mirrors the wider arc of British music television: the interactive boom of the mid-2000s, the corporate consolidation of the 2010s and the final collapse of linear music channels in the streaming era. Few channels changed hands as often or adapted as repeatedly, yet none of its reinventions could ultimately save it.

Launch as Fizz TV

Fizz TV launched on 24 January 2005 on Sky, following test transmissions that began on 10 January. Its output consisted of music videos from the genres popular in the charts, with a heavy interactive element: viewers could send in text messages and pictures that were shown on screen alongside the videos.

The interactive format was characteristic of the mid-2000s music channel boom, when premium-rate texting provided a significant revenue stream. Fizz TV's parent company was Video Interactive Television, which also owned the grime channel Channel U. The two channels shared corporate infrastructure and a focus on audience participation.

The pop version of Channel U

Fizz TV was conceived as a pop counterpart to the urban-focused Channel U, operating a voting system that allowed viewers to vote for the songs they wanted to see. The channel's on-screen presentation was dominated by a sidebar displaying chat messages alongside the music videos, a format that some viewers found distracting but which embodied the interactive ethos of the time.

The channel gave pop fans a participatory alternative to the more straightforward video channels, and its voting mechanic anticipated the on-demand choice that streaming services would later offer. For a brief period, Fizz TV captured the interactive zeitgeist of mid-2000s music television.

Liquidation and the Mushroom TV era

At the beginning of February 2009, Video Interactive Television went into voluntary liquidation. The company's two channels were purchased by Mushroom TV, which agreed that Channel U and Fizz TV should be rebranded. On 16 March 2009 the two channels were relaunched as Channel AKA and Starz TV respectively.

The rebrand gave the former Fizz TV a new identity as Starz TV, positioned as a chart and pop music channel. Under Mushroom TV's ownership, the channel continued its chart-focused output, though the interactive texting revenues that had sustained the Fizz TV era were already in decline as audiences migrated to social media.

Sale to Cloud Television

On 22 June 2012 Mushroom TV entered liquidation, the second collapse of the channel's corporate parent in three years. Ofcom's television broadcast licensing update for May 2012 indicated that Starz TV had been sold to Cloud Television One Limited, giving the channel its third owner.

The rapid turnover of ownership reflected the deteriorating economics of small music channels. Each sale kept the channel on air, but none provided the investment or strategic direction needed to secure its long-term future.

The Sony years

From 2014 to 2018 Starz TV was owned by Sony Pictures Television, becoming part of the entertainment giant's large UK music channel portfolio alongside Scuzz, Flava, Chart Show TV, The Vault, Tiny Pop and others. The Sony era brought corporate stability and shared operational resources, though the channel remained a relatively small part of the portfolio.

On 15 April 2014 Starz TV launched on Freesat, replacing BuzMuzik, which had closed 12 days earlier. The Freesat launch expanded the channel's free-to-air distribution. However, on 31 July 2018 the channel was removed from Freesat along with Chart Show TV, Scuzz and Tiny Pop +1, as Sony began to rationalise its music channels.

Acquisition by TRACE Group

On 13 December 2018 Starz TV was acquired by the TRACE Group along with three of its sister music channels, as Sony Pictures Television exited much of its UK music television business. The acquisition brought the channel under the ownership of the international media company behind the Trace music brands.

Under TRACE, the channel's sister services were rebranded: The Vault became Trace Vault in November 2019. Starz TV itself was temporarily rebranded as Christmas Starz on 1 October 2019, adopting a new logo that continued after the channel reverted to the Starz TV name on 7 January 2020. On 21 October 2019 the channel had returned to Freesat, replacing The Vault, restoring its free-to-air presence.

Closure

The channel closed on 1 June 2020 along with Trace Latina, as the TRACE Group rationalised its UK channel portfolio. Its content moved to a block on Trace Urban in the mornings, preserving some of its programming within the group's remaining output.

The last song on the channel was reported as "Barbie Girl" by Aqua, cut off partway through the video, an abrupt ending reminiscent of the closures of its former sister channels Flava and Scuzz. After 15 years and four owners, Starz TV left the air during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic, which accelerated the decline of linear television.

Place in music television history

Starz TV's 15-year run spanned the entire arc of the modern British music channel era. It launched as Fizz TV during the interactive texting boom, survived two corporate liquidations, passed through Sony's ownership during the consolidation of the 2010s, and ended under TRACE as the linear music model collapsed.

The channel's repeated reinventions, from interactive pop voting to chart television to part of an international music brand, showed the adaptability required to survive in the sector. But the structural forces working against linear music channels, the migration of music viewing to streaming and video platforms, proved insurmountable.

The interactive television boom

Fizz TV's launch in 2005 came at the height of the interactive television boom, when premium-rate phone and text services provided a lucrative revenue stream for music channels. Viewers paid to send messages, dedicate videos and vote in polls, and the on-screen chat created a sense of community among the audience.

The model was enormously profitable for a brief period, but it depended on viewers' willingness to pay for participation. As social media offered the same interactivity for free, the premium-rate revenues collapsed, undermining the business model of channels like Fizz TV. The channel's evolution into Starz TV and its later incarnations can be seen as a long retreat from the interactive dream of 2005 toward the conventional video channel it became.

Legacy

Starz TV is remembered as one of the great survivors of British music television, a channel that endured 15 years, four owners and multiple identities. From the texting sidebar of Fizz TV to the final bars of "Barbie Girl", it entertained pop fans through a period of enormous change in how music is consumed.

Its closure in June 2020, alongside Trace Latina, marked another step in the disappearance of linear music television from British screens. The channel's content lives on in the Trace Urban morning block, but the dedicated Starz TV service, with its long and turbulent history, is gone: a reminder of an era when turning on the television was how you discovered new music.
