About State Key Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems Engineering
State Key Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems Engineering
The State Key Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems Engineering is a national research laboratory at Xi'an Jiaotong University in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province. Established in 1989, it was evaluated as excellent in the state key laboratory assessments of 2013 and 2018, and in November 2022 it completed a reorganisation into a national key laboratory for precision and micro-nano manufacturing technology, a successor identity that reflects the direction its research had taken. Under its long-standing director, academician Zhuangde Jiang, the laboratory has concentrated on precision and micro-nano manufacturing, industrial machine tools, additive and bio-manufacturing, intelligent sensing and equipment monitoring, and has received twenty national science and technology awards.
Founding and Development
The laboratory was established in 1989, placing it among the earlier state key laboratories in engineering. It is hosted by the university's School of Mechanical Engineering, a school whose own history begins in 1913 and which has been ranked second worldwide in mechanical engineering in the ShanghaiRanking subject rankings continuously since 2018, according to the university. Over more than thirty years of development, the laboratory's own overview records, it achieved innovation in the principles of micro-nano manufacturing and in the research and development of key equipment, strengthened its talent team and experimental platform, and formed its academic character through the close integration of original innovation with national needs, of process research with independent equipment development, and of unit technologies with system integration.
The November 2022 reorganisation is the most important recent event in the laboratory's history. In China's restructuring of the state key laboratory system, laboratories were reorganised and in many cases renamed to sharpen their missions. This laboratory emerged as the national key laboratory for precision and micro-nano manufacturing technology, a name drawn from its strongest research line. The laboratory is therefore profiled here under its long-attested name, State Key Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems Engineering, with its reorganised identity recorded as its successor form.
Leadership
The laboratory's director is Zhuangde Jiang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a professor of Xi'an Jiaotong University, where his contact base is the laboratory and the university's Institute of Precision Engineering. Jiang is also honorary professor of the University of Birmingham and visiting professor of the University of New South Wales, vice director of the Science and Technology Commission of the Ministry of Education, chairman of the Shaanxi Association for Science and Technology, and a vice chairman of both the Chinese Society for Mechanical Engineering and the Chinese Society for Micro-Nano Technology, as well as director of the International Joint Research Laboratory of Micro/Nano Manufacturing and Measurement Technology. His research covers micro- and nano-fabrication and metrology, optical technology and instrumentation, and precision and ultra-precision manufacturing, and biographical sources credit him with two National Awards of Technological Innovation, one National Award of Science and Technology Progress and nine provincial and ministerial awards. The chairman of the laboratory's academic committee is academician Dongming Guo, a leading figure in precision machining in China.
Other senior researchers illustrate the laboratory's breadth. Shuming Yang, a professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering, works on micro- and nano-fabrication and metrology, optical technology and instrumentation and precision and ultra-precision manufacturing, has led more than twenty research projects including national key research and development programmes, and serves as an associate editor of the Journal of Manufacturing Systems. Such editorial and conference roles — Jiang and Yang were among the editors of the proceedings of the seventh International Conference on Nanomanufacturing, held in Xi'an in November 2021 — mark the laboratory's place in the international manufacturing research community.
Mission and Research Orientation
The laboratory's stated orientation is centred on the major strategic needs of the country: developing innovative methods, technologies, equipment and devices for precision micro-nano manufacturing, constructing a complete technological chain, and forming a national-level platform for precision micro-nano manufacturing. Its overview describes its work as dedicated to innovative research, engineering applications, open sharing and platform support, at the frontiers of manufacturing technology and in response to major national demands. In practical terms, this means the laboratory aims not only to understand manufacturing processes but to build the machines, sensors and systems that perform them — a systems engineering view in which a process, its equipment, its measurement and its control are designed together.
Research Areas
The laboratory's official overview lists five concentration areas: precision and micro-nano manufacturing technologies; industrial machine tools and key functional components; additive and bio-manufacturing; intelligent sensing systems; and equipment operation monitoring. Its fuller research taxonomy, published on its own site, organises work into four groups. The first, advanced manufacturing principles and technology, covers additive manufacturing and three-dimensional printing, micro- and nano-manufacturing and micro-electromechanical systems, and biofabrication — the technologies that change what manufacturing systems can do, aiming at shorter processes, high precision and efficiency, low energy consumption and pollution, and the ability to make complex structures and use new materials. The second, manufacturing system equipment and integration, covers high-performance manufacturing and testing equipment, assembly technology, three-dimensional reverse engineering, and the digital and intelligent technologies involved in equipment design, manufacture and testing. The third, manufacturing information and systems engineering, applies information technology and systems analysis to the data of manufacturing and service processes, optimising manufacturing resources and the operation of equipment and production systems. The fourth, advanced manufacturing system modes, studies how enterprise manufacturing resources, production organisation and service systems should be arranged, correlating manufacturing technology with non-technical factors to improve production organisation and equipment performance.
Precision and Micro-Nano Manufacturing and Sensing
Precision and micro-nano manufacturing is the laboratory's signature strength and the source of its reorganised name. Work in this area addresses how features at micrometre and nanometre scales can be fabricated, measured and controlled — the foundation for micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), advanced sensors and high-precision instruments. The university's precision engineering materials describe MEMS sensors and actuators including high-temperature pressure sensors, ultra-low pressure sensors and ultra-high-g accelerometers, together with nanoscale templates, nano-optical devices and microfluidic devices, and technical areas spanning micro-nano manufacturing, MEMS sensors and actuators, nanometrology and nano-bio-engineering. Zhuangde Jiang's group has also published widely on advanced sensor materials and devices, including flexible and stretchable strain sensors, thin-film temperature sensors, gas sensing nanomaterials and self-healing hydrogel bioelectronics, connecting manufacturing technique to the devices it makes possible.
Measurement is integral to this work: manufacturing at micro and nano scales is only useful if the results can be verified, so nanometrology — the science of measurement at those scales — runs alongside fabrication in the laboratory's programme, reflected in Jiang's directorship of the international joint research laboratory for micro/nano manufacturing and measurement technology.
Additive and Bio-Manufacturing
The laboratory's additive manufacturing work has a notable clinical landmark. A Nature Portfolio account of the School of Mechanical Engineering records that researchers at Xi'an Jiaotong University achieved the world's first clinical trial of a customised mandible implant produced by additive manufacturing in 2001, a breakthrough in personalised treatment for large-scale bone defects. Additive manufacturing — building parts layer by layer from digital models — allows implants and components to be shaped to an individual patient or a complex geometry that conventional machining cannot produce. Bio-manufacturing extends the same logic to living and biological materials, and the laboratory lists biofabrication within its advanced manufacturing principles, and additive and bio-manufacturing among its five concentration areas. Research programmes at the host school encompass the full life cycle of major mechanical equipment, from design and manufacturing to in-service performance, giving the laboratory's additive work an engineering context that runs from implant design to equipment operation.
Machine Tools, Monitoring and Manufacturing Systems
The systems side of the laboratory's name is represented by its work on industrial machine tools and their key functional components, on intelligent sensing systems, and on equipment operation monitoring. Machine tools are the machines that make machines, and their precision determines the precision of everything produced on them; the laboratory's work on their functional components addresses the spindles, drives and structures on which that precision depends. Equipment operation monitoring applies sensing and data analysis to machines in service, detecting degradation and faults before they cause failure — a theme developed in the laboratory's manufacturing information and systems engineering research, which uses data mining on manufacturing and service process data to regulate processes and optimise resources.
The laboratory's researchers have also contributed to thinking about how manufacturing itself is organised. Work by laboratory authors on the shared factory — a production model in which manufacturing capacity is shared through internet-based, service-oriented platforms, within the broader paradigm of social manufacturing — was published as a perspective on how manufacturing industry is moving toward socialisation, interconnection and platformisation. That line of work, associated with researcher Pingyu Jiang, shows the laboratory addressing production organisation as well as production technology, consistent with the fourth branch of its research taxonomy on advanced manufacturing system modes.
Awards and Evaluation Record
Since its establishment, the laboratory's overview records, it has received twenty national scientific and technological achievement awards, itemised as three second prizes of the National Natural Science Award, eight second prizes listed for the National Science and Technology Progress Award and a further nine second prizes under the same award heading in the laboratory's English text — twenty national awards in total. It was evaluated as excellent twice, in the state key laboratory assessments of 2013 and 2018, a record it shares with few engineering laboratories and one that underpinned its selection for reorganisation as a national key laboratory in 2022. The host school adds that over the last decade it has led a number of major national projects and won ten national and more than twenty provincial and ministerial scientific research awards, and hosts eleven national-level and seventeen provincial and ministerial research and teaching bases, including this laboratory and a collaborative innovation centre for frontier manufacturing equipment.
Place in Chinese Manufacturing Research
Manufacturing is central to China's industrial strategy, and precision manufacturing in particular determines capability in aerospace, semiconductors, instruments and medical devices. The State Key Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems Engineering, from its base in Xi'an — a historic centre of Chinese industry and the home of Xi'an Jiaotong University's highly ranked mechanical engineering discipline — has served since 1989 as one of the national platforms for that capability. Its evolution tells the story of its field: founded for manufacturing systems engineering in the era of computer-integrated manufacturing, it developed strengths in micro-nano fabrication, sensing, additive manufacturing and intelligent monitoring, and was reorganised in 2022 around precision and micro-nano manufacturing technology. Under either name, its defining approach remains the integration its overview emphasises — original innovation joined to national needs, process research joined to equipment development, and individual technologies joined into complete systems.
