About State Key Laboratory of Crop Biology

State Key Laboratory of Crop Biology

The State Key Laboratory of Crop Biology is a national research laboratory hosted by Shandong Agricultural University in Tai'an, Shandong Province, China. It works on the crops that dominate farming in the Huang-Huai-Hai region — the great plain south of the Yellow River that spans parts of Shandong, Henan, Hebei, Jiangsu and Anhui and produces a large share of China's wheat and maize — together with apple, a major fruit crop for Shandong. Its three research directions, stated consistently in the university's own accounts, are crop physiology and ecology, crop germplasm innovation, and crop molecular biology. The laboratory is distinct from similarly named crop laboratories elsewhere in China: it belongs to Shandong Agricultural University in Tai'an, and its history, leadership and research programme are those of that institution.

History and Establishment

The laboratory was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2003 as one of the first state key laboratory breeding bases jointly built by a province and the ministry — the province-ministry co-construction model used to develop national-level research capacity inside a provincial university. In 2007 it was approved as a full state key laboratory, and Shandong Agricultural University's College of Life Sciences records that in 2007 the State Key Laboratory of Crop Biology was completed and put into operation. Since 2006, the results of three laboratory evaluations have all been rated good, according to the university's account of the laboratory's development given by its director. In 2020, one of its achievements was selected by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering into China's Annual Top Ten Scientific and Technological Progress News, and ranked first among the Top Ten Scientific and Technological Achievements in Shandong Province. In recent years the laboratory has also been jointly built with Shandong University: the two universities signed an agreement to build the laboratory together and to contribute jointly to national food security and to scientific and technological innovation in agriculture.

Host Institution: Shandong Agricultural University

Shandong Agricultural University is based in Tai'an, the city at the foot of Mount Tai in Shandong. Its College of Life Sciences, founded in 1998, serves as a core component of the State Key Laboratory of Crop Biology. The college was approved for a postdoctoral research station in biology in 2003 and authorised to confer a first-tier doctoral degree in biology in 2006. Its plant and animal science discipline entered the global top 0.1 per mille of the ESI rankings in 2022, while biology and biochemistry entered the global top 1 per cent, figures the university cites in describing the disciplinary base on which the laboratory rests. The College of Agronomy, which shares the university's origins, traces its roots to 1906 and was founded in its present form on 12 December 2000; crop science at the university has been designated a peak discipline of Shandong Province. The laboratory therefore sits inside a university whose strongest disciplines — agronomy, life sciences and plant science — are exactly the disciplines its research requires.

Leadership

Zhang Xiansheng, president of Shandong Agricultural University, has served as director of the laboratory and presided over the signing ceremony for the joint construction agreement with Shandong University, at which he introduced the laboratory's development. Zhang received a bachelor's degree in agronomy from Shandong Agricultural University in 1982 and a master's degree in plant physiology from the same university in 1988, was a visiting scholar in the Department of Botany at the University of California, Davis in 1990, and received a doctorate in plant physiology from China Agricultural University in 1997. He became president of Shandong Agricultural University in November 2016. His own research, presented in academic exchanges, centres on plant stem cells and the molecular basis of regeneration — work he describes as a core proposition of plant developmental biology and an important foundation for the molecular genetic improvement of crops and the industrialisation of plant biotechnology, in which the interaction between key transcription factors and plant hormones regulates the formation, maintenance and differentiation of root and shoot stem cells.

Research Direction One: Crop Physiology and Ecology

The first of the laboratory's three directions studies how crops grow, yield and use resources under field conditions in the Huang-Huai-Hai region. The university's account states the practical problems plainly: the stark contradiction between high yield and quality, and the need for efficient utilisation of resources in producing staple crops such as wheat and maize. Research published by laboratory-affiliated scientists in this area includes work on lodging in wheat — the flattening of the crop by wind and rain, which remains a major constraint on yield and quality even after dwarfing genes reduced plant height — and on integrated agronomic optimisation, in which sowing date, planting density, fertilisation and irrigation management are adjusted together to the local environment so that yield and resource-use efficiency rise synergistically rather than at each other's expense. Physiology and ecology work of this kind connects the laboratory's molecular research to the field, testing whether genetic improvements actually deliver yield, quality and efficiency under real farming conditions.

Research Direction Two: Crop Germplasm Innovation

The second direction addresses the raw material of breeding: germplasm, the collected genetic diversity from which new varieties are made. The laboratory's stated problems include the narrow genetic basis of crop germplasm and the rarity of excellent germplasms in production for wheat, maize and apple in the Huang-Huai-Hai region. A narrow genetic base is a recognised vulnerability in modern agriculture, because varieties descended from a small number of parents share weaknesses as well as strengths, including susceptibility to new pests, diseases and climate stresses. Germplasm innovation means finding, characterising and creating new genetic material — from landraces, wild relatives and new combinations — and moving useful traits from that material into breeding lines. For a laboratory serving a region that grows wheat, maize and apple at national scale, widening and improving the germplasm pool is foundational work on which variety development for decades depends.

Research Direction Three: Crop Molecular Biology

The third direction applies molecular biology to the same crops: identifying the genes and regulatory networks behind yield, quality, development and stress responses, and supplying the knowledge and markers that modern breeding uses. The director's own programme on plant stem cells and regeneration illustrates the approach — understanding, at the level of transcription factors and hormones, how the stem-cell populations at root and shoot tips are formed, maintained and directed to differentiate, because those processes govern plant architecture and the capacity to regenerate plants in tissue culture, on which genetic improvement techniques depend. Molecular work in the laboratory's wider college community has appeared in journals including Trends in Plant Science, Molecular Plant, Advanced Science, Nature Communications and Nature Plants, and the college reports more than 500 SCI-indexed papers over a recent five-year period, 35 of them in journals with an impact factor above 10 — figures given here for the host college, which forms a core part of the laboratory, rather than for the laboratory alone.

The Huang-Huai-Hai Mission

The laboratory describes its work as actively integrating into national and regional strategies. Its geographic focus is deliberate. The Huang-Huai-Hai plain is one of China's most important grain-producing regions, and Shandong is among its leading agricultural provinces. The problems the laboratory names — reconciling high yield with quality, using water and fertiliser efficiently, broadening a narrow germplasm base, and finding excellent germplasm for wheat, maize and apple — are the production problems of that region stated in research form. National food security, the goal invoked at the joint-construction signing with Shandong University, depends in practical terms on exactly this combination: varieties that yield more without sacrificing quality, production systems that use fewer resources per tonne of grain, and a genetic base broad enough to withstand changing pests, diseases and climate.

Joint Construction with Shandong University

In recent years Shandong Agricultural University and Shandong University have joined hands in building the laboratory, under a signed agreement to construct it jointly. Shandong University, based in Jinan, is one of China's major comprehensive universities, and the partnership brings its broader basic-science strengths alongside Shandong Agricultural University's agricultural disciplines. The stated purpose of the joint construction, in the universities' own reporting, is to contribute wisdom and strength to guaranteeing national food security and promoting scientific and technological innovation in the agricultural field. For the laboratory, joint construction is a route to the scale and interdisciplinarity that crop biology increasingly requires, combining field agronomy and germplasm work with molecular and basic plant science.

Evaluation and Recognition

State key laboratories in China are subject to periodic national evaluation, and the laboratory's record, as reported by its host university, is that the results of three laboratory evaluations since 2006 were all good. Its 2020 achievement selected into China's Annual Top Ten Scientific and Technological Progress News — an annual list chosen through the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering — and ranked first among Shandong Province's top ten scientific and technological achievements of that year, is the clearest public marker of the laboratory's standing. The laboratory has, in the university's summary, built several outstanding research teams and produced a series of landmark scientific research achievements directed at the production problems of the region's staple crops.

Role in Chinese Crop Science

Within China's research system, the State Key Laboratory of Crop Biology occupies a specific niche: it is the national laboratory anchored in a provincial agricultural university in the heart of the Huang-Huai-Hai grain region, working across the full chain from physiology and ecology through germplasm to molecular biology for wheat, maize and apple. Its province-ministry co-construction origin in 2003, its elevation to a state key laboratory in 2007, its consistently good evaluation results, its nationally recognised 2020 achievement, and its more recent joint construction by two universities together describe an institution built to turn basic crop science into regional production gains. Profiles of similarly named laboratories elsewhere — including laboratories for crop stress biology in arid areas — describe different institutions with different hosts and missions, and should not be confused with this Tai'an laboratory.
