About Stockstar

Stockstar

Stockstar, published at stockstar.com, is a Shanghai financial news portal known in Chinese as Zhengquan Zhixing, which translates as Securities Star. It is one of the oldest financial websites in China: the portal was founded in 1996, in the first years of China's commercial internet, and it has been described in company histories as one of China's first securities websites. For readers of Chinese financial media, Stockstar belongs to the founding generation of online finance brands, created when market information that had previously travelled by newspaper, television and telephone began to move onto personal computers. Its directory record lists its home city and state as Shanghai, China, and its official website as stockstar.com.

Founding in 1996 and the first generation of Chinese finance websites

Stockstar's own site description, reproduced in website directories, states that Securities Star was founded in 1996 and calls it one of the earliest professional financial services websites on the Chinese internet, as well as a well-known Chinese financial news website and mobile financial services provider. That dating places Stockstar alongside a small group of 1990s pioneers — a cohort that also includes Hexun, founded in the same year — which built the first Chinese-language destinations devoted specifically to securities and investment information. The context matters for understanding the brand. In 1996 China's stock markets in Shanghai and Shenzhen were still young, retail investing was growing, and there was no established online channel through which individual investors could follow prices, announcements and market commentary during the trading day. A dedicated securities website was a new kind of publication, and Stockstar's survival from that period into the present makes it one of the longest-running names in Chinese online finance.

What Stockstar covers

Stockstar's editorial brief is the Chinese securities market and the wider financial news that moves it. The clean directory description summarises the portal as publishing A-share news, market data, fund and brokerage information, and that summary matches the site's own account of itself as a comprehensive securities website providing Chinese securities quotes, financial news, stock market developments and institutional recommendations. In practice, that means the daily material a mainland retail investor expects from a finance portal: share-price and index information for the mainland markets, news on listed companies and their results, coverage of funds and of the brokerage industry, and the flow of market-moving announcements and commentary that surrounds the trading session. The portal's focus is economic and market news rather than general news; directory profiles of the site note that it concentrates on the stock market, corporate earnings and wealth management topics for personal investors and business readers following Asian financial markets.

Data and subscription information services

From early in its life under its later owner, Stockstar was not only a free news site but also part of a paid information business. China Finance Online, the company that came to own the portal, described its model in its public filings and announcements in consistent terms: through its websites jrj.com and stockstar.com, the company provided individual users with subscription-based service packages that integrated financial and listed-company data, information and analytics from multiple sources, with functions including data and information search, retrieval, delivery, storage and analysis. That description captures the dual character Stockstar developed — a public financial news portal on the surface, and underneath it a structured database business selling organised listed-company information to subscribers. Institutional data services sat elsewhere in the same corporate group, but Stockstar itself was one of the two public faces through which the group's information products reached individual investors.

Acquisition by China Finance Online

The decisive change in Stockstar's corporate history came in 2006. According to China Finance Online's annual-report history, summarised from its United States filings, the company acquired stockstar.com in 2006, two years after its own listing on Nasdaq in October 2004. Stockstar's own site description likewise identifies it as a website of China Finance Online, the Nasdaq-listed company whose Chinese name is Zhongguo Jinrong Zaixian. The acquisition paired Stockstar with JRJ, the Beijing financial portal that China Finance Online had acquired earlier, and from that point the two sites were operated and promoted together as the group's flagship portals. Company announcements from 2009 onwards routinely describe jrj.com and stockstar.com in a single sentence as the company's two prominent flagship portal sites, ranked among the top financial websites in China.

A flagship portal alongside JRJ

Stockstar's position inside China Finance Online shaped how the brand was presented for the rest of its history. The parent company described itself as a web-based financial services company providing Chinese retail investors with access to securities, commodities and wealth management products, and it presented Stockstar and JRJ as the portals through which that offer reached the public. Filings summarised in investment research noted that the two websites carried substantially the same content under different names, an arrangement that let the group maintain two long-established finance brands — JRJ in Beijing and Stockstar in Shanghai — while producing one body of market news and data. For Stockstar, the consequence was continuity rather than reinvention: the Securities Star name, domain and audience were preserved, while production, subscription products and later trading services were built at group level and delivered through both portals.

The Securities Master and mobile era

Stockstar's later development followed its parent's push from information into transactions. In August 2014 China Finance Online launched Zhengquantong, branded in English as Securities Master and described by the company as China's first independent web-based securities trading platform, on the portals it operated, including stockstar.com. The platform was the product of a strategic partnership with CITIC Securities, described in the launch announcement as the largest brokerage firm in China. Two months later, in October 2014, the company updated its mobile application to incorporate Securities Master functions, supporting real-time securities trading and allowing users to open accounts in China through their mobile devices; the announcement quoted chairman and chief executive Zhiwei Zhao presenting the upgrade as bringing the trading platform into the company's mobile financial application. Stockstar's own descriptions from this period also present it as a mobile financial services provider, and its mobile web edition was promoted as a phone portal for traders — a sign of how a 1996 desktop-era securities site adapted to the smartphone market through its parent's product development.

Shanghai base and corporate footprint

Stockstar has remained a Shanghai brand throughout its history. The clean directory record lists the outlet in Shanghai, Shanghai, China, and profiles of the site likewise place it in Shanghai. Its corporate footprint in the city appears in its parent group's structure: reporting on China Finance Online's Shanghai subsidiaries identified Shanghai Meining Computer Software as the entity that owned stockstar.com, and a related group company traded under the name Shanghai Stockstar Wealth Management. That Shanghai anchoring distinguishes Stockstar from its Beijing sister portal JRJ within the same group, and it fits the city's role as home to the Shanghai Stock Exchange and to much of China's fund and brokerage industry — the industries whose news, data and products form the core of the portal's coverage.

Audience and use

Stockstar's audience is the mainland Chinese retail investor and the professionals who serve that market. Its mix of quotes, A-share news, fund information and brokerage coverage is built for readers who follow the Shanghai and Shenzhen markets day by day and who want company announcements, earnings news and market commentary gathered in one familiar destination. The subscription packages historically sold through the site added a second kind of user: investors willing to pay for organised listed-company data and analytical tools rather than relying only on free headlines. Students of Chinese business and finance have also used the portal as a reference on Asian markets, according to directory profiles of the site. In each case the use case rests on longevity — a portal that has carried the same name and domain since the 1990s is, for many of its readers, simply part of the furniture of the Chinese market day.

Standing and significance

Stockstar's significance is primarily historical and structural. Historically, it is a survivor from 1996, the first generation of Chinese financial websites, still operating under its original Securities Star identity nearly three decades later — a lifespan few internet brands anywhere can match. Structurally, its story illustrates how China's early independent finance portals were consolidated: founded as a pioneering securities site, acquired in 2006 by the Nasdaq-listed China Finance Online, operated as a flagship portal alongside JRJ, and carried through successive waves of group strategy from subscription data packages to the Securities Master trading platform and mobile account opening. For anyone mapping the development of Chinese online financial media, Stockstar is one of the essential early names, and its official website remains stockstar.com.
