About Surya TV
Surya TV is a Malayalam-language general entertainment pay television channel owned by Sun TV Network, headquartered in Kochi, Kerala. Launched on 19 October 1998, it is one of the oldest private Malayalam entertainment channels and has spent much of its life among the top-ranked channels in Kerala. Its programming spans daily serials, reality shows, films, news and special events, and it runs a high-definition feed, Sun Surya HD, which is among the leading Malayalam HD channels. In 2026 the channel adopted the 'Sun Surya' branding, aligning it with the network's naming convention across its southern channels.
History
Surya TV was launched by Sun TV Network as the group's Malayalam general entertainment channel, extending into Kerala a regional strategy that had begun with the Tamil flagship Sun TV in 1993 and continued with Gemini TV in Telugu and Udaya TV in Kannada. Within a few years of its debut, Surya TV had broken the long-standing dominance of Asianet in the Kerala market. By early 2002 — after barely three years on air — it had emerged as the clear leader in the state: INTAM ratings for the week of 18–24 February 2002 gave Surya TV a 22.4 percent share of weekday viewing against Asianet's 15.92 percent, and the channel claimed 24 of the top 30 programmes in Kerala.
The channel consolidated its position through the 2000s with a mix of original serials, dubbed fiction and large-scale reality programming, and it has remained a fixture of the top tier of Malayalam channels ever since. It launched a high-definition feed, Sun Surya HD, which became the third Malayalam-language HD channel. On 1 November 2025 — Kerala Piravi Day — the channel unveiled a refreshed on-air look with new graphics built around a sunflower-led visual motif, following a logo repositioning the previous month.
Ownership and Corporate Structure
Surya TV is owned by Sun TV Network Limited, the Chennai-headquartered broadcast group founded by Kalanithi Maran. Maran launched Sun TV on 14 April 1993 with three hours of daily Tamil programming; the channel expanded to a 24-hour service in January 1995 and became the foundation of one of India's largest television networks. The group subsequently launched Surya TV in Malayalam in 1998, Gemini TV in Telugu in 1995, and brought Udaya TV — on air in Kannada since 1994 — into its fold, building a four-language southern broadcasting empire.
Sun TV Network is a publicly listed company and one of the most profitable broadcasters in the country. In its corporate disclosures the group lists Surya TV among its principal satellite channels alongside Sun TV, Gemini TV and Udaya TV; for the financial year 2023–24 the network reported consolidated revenue of around Rs 4,148 crore with total income of about Rs 4,630 crore. The group's assets span dozens of television channels, the Sun NXT streaming platform, FM radio stations, newspapers and the SunRisers Hyderabad cricket franchise.
Programming and Flagship Shows
Surya TV's schedule is built around daily fiction, with prime-time serials forming the backbone of its ratings. Its current and recent drama line-up includes titles such as 'Kanyadanam', 'Hridayam', 'Peythozhiyathe', 'Chattambipaaru', 'Swayamvarapanthal' and 'Roopavathi', many of them adaptations of successful serials from the network's Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Bengali channels — a long-standing Sun TV Network practice that lets hit stories travel across languages with local casts.
The channel has also been a significant player in Malayalam non-fiction television. Its reality roster has included 'Malayalee House', the Malayalam adaptation of the 'Big Brother' format; 'Deal or No Deal', the game show hosted by Suraj Venjaramoodu; the comedy show 'Laughing Villa'; 'Super Jodi' and 'Rani Maharani'; the music competition 'Surya Super Singer'; and quiz and game formats including 'Anchinodu Inchodinchu', hosted by Suresh Gopi, and 'Kodeeshwaran', hosted by Mukesh. Long-running staples of the channel's heritage include the morning show 'Ponpulari', which ran for over a decade.
News Division
Surya TV operates a dedicated news division producing regional, national and international bulletins for the Malayalam audience. Its flagship news programme, 'Surya Varthakal', has been one of the channel's enduring properties, serving viewers who take their daily news from the entertainment channel's newsroom alongside its fiction and film programming. The news operation covers Kerala politics, civic affairs and major national developments, complementing the pure-play Malayalam news channels in the market.
Brand Identity and Positioning
Surya TV's identity has long been tied to the sunflower motif — 'surya' meaning sun — which the network refreshed in its November 2025 rebrand with a brighter palette and updated title treatments across fiction, promos and sponsor cards. The 2026 renaming to Sun Surya brought the channel explicitly under the master 'Sun' brand, matching the nomenclature of sister channels such as Sun TV, Sun Bangla and Sun Marathi.
Editorially, the channel positions itself as the complete family entertainment destination for Malayalam households: morning devotional and women-skewed programming, afternoon serials, prime-time fiction, weekend films and reality events. Its historic rivalry with Asianet defined Malayalam television for two decades, and the channel continues to trade the top positions in the Kerala ratings with its competitors.
Reach and Viewership
Surya TV is distributed across India and in key overseas markets with significant Malayali populations, including the Gulf states, Singapore and Malaysia. It is carried on all major cable and direct-to-home platforms in Kerala — including Tata Play, Airtel Digital TV, Dish TV, d2h and Sun Direct — as well as on the Sun Direct platform owned by the group itself. Its high-definition feed extends its reach to HD households, and the channel streams live on Sun NXT.
The channel's audience extends well beyond Kerala's borders through the global Malayali diaspora, for whom Surya TV's serials and films are a primary connection to home entertainment. Its official web presence is through the network's portal at suntv.in.
Ratings and Market Position
Surya TV's early-2000s overthrow of Asianet remains one of the landmark moments in Indian regional television, and the channel has remained a top-tier player ever since. Recent Broadcast Audience Research Council data continues to place it among the leading Malayalam channels: in week 36 of 2025 it ranked number two in Kerala. The channel's serials regularly feature in the most-watched fiction lists for the state, and its festival and reality specials draw some of the largest Malayalam television audiences of the year.
The channel's YouTube presence adds a further dimension to its reach: as of late 2025 its official channel counted around 3.7 million subscribers, reflecting the migration of serial viewing to digital catch-up among younger audiences.
Digital and Streaming Presence
Surya TV streams live and on demand on Sun NXT, Sun TV Network's over-the-top platform, which carries the group's channels across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali and Marathi. Full episodes of its serials, reality shows and films are available on the service, alongside a large library of Sun network content.
The channel maintains official pages on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, where it publishes episode highlights, promos and behind-the-scenes content. Its multi-million-subscriber YouTube audience makes it one of the most-followed Malayalam television brands on the platform.
Sister Channels and Group Assets
Surya TV anchors Sun TV Network's Malayalam cluster, which includes Sun Surya Movies, the Malayalam movie channel; Sun Surya Music, the Malayalam music channel; Kochu TV, the Malayalam kids channel launched in 2011; and Sun Life, the network's classic entertainment channel. Across languages, its siblings include Sun TV and KTV in Tamil, Gemini TV and Gemini Movies in Telugu, Udaya TV and Udaya Movies in Kannada, Sun Bangla in Bengali and Sun Marathi in Marathi, alongside music channels Sun Music, Gemini Music and Udaya Music and the comedy channels Adithya TV, Gemini Comedy and Udaya Comedy.
Headquarters and Operations
Surya TV is headquartered in Kochi, Kerala, with the network's corporate and broadcast operations centred in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The channel's newsroom, studios and production facilities serve the Malayalam market from Kerala, while network-level functions — including adaptation of fiction formats across languages, film acquisition and technology — are managed at the group level. After more than a quarter-century on air, and now carrying the Sun Surya name, the channel remains the flagship of Sun TV Network's Kerala business and one of the defining brands of Malayalam television.
