About Swanage & Wareham Advertiser

The Swanage & Wareham Advertiser is a local newspaper serving the towns of Swanage and Wareham, the village of Wool and the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, England. It publishes through the website swanageandwarehamvoice.co.uk and operates from an office at 21B Commercial Road, Swanage, Dorset BH19 1DF. A Newsquest title rooted in the old Swanage Times, it covers community news, events, sport and advertising for one of the most distinctive rural and coastal districts of the South West.

From the Swanage Times to the Advertiser

The Advertiser's lineage runs back to the Swanage Times, the town's historic broadsheet. Its most celebrated editor was George Willey, known locally as "Mr Swanage", who arrived in the town in 1953 intending it as a staging-post on the way to Fleet Street and a career as a political journalist — and ended up staying for the rest of his life. Willey had done his National Service as a clerk in the Royal Army Service Corps, trained as a cub reporter on the South Wales Argus, spent three years as chief reporter of the Durham County Press, and on moving to Swanage worked for the Western Gazette while writing and editing the Swanage Times.

In 1955 Willey created his alter-ego, Tilly Whim — named after the disused stone quarries above Swanage — to help fill the old broadsheet Times, and the column continued to run for more than 50 years. Through his columns and his work as a commentator for visiting holidaymakers, Willey met figures including the historian Arthur Bryant, the actress Googie Withers and the author Enid Blyton, and he was an active member of a large number of clubs, societies and organisations across Dorset. He died suddenly while on holiday in October 2017 at the age of 83. The Swanage Times became the Swanage and Wareham Advertiser following a takeover by Southern Newspapers, the Southampton-based regional group later absorbed into Newsquest.

Newsquest ownership

The paper's Newsquest ownership is documented in its domain records: swanageandwarehamvoice.co.uk was registered on 2 December 2014 through the registrar Newsquest Media Group Limited, with its name servers and mail systems running on Newsquest infrastructure (ns1.newsquest.co.uk and the group's Outlook mail protection). Its classified advertising enquiries are handled by LocaliQ, Newsquest's marketing solutions arm, and the primary business contact for the title is listed with a bournemouthecho.co.uk email address — the Bournemouth Echo being the group's flagship Dorset daily.

The site sits alongside the group's other county titles — bournemouthecho.co.uk, dorsetecho.co.uk and bridportnews.co.uk — which were listed together as the county's established local news websites in Dorset Council's own business-support materials. Readers looking for public notices published by the Advertiser are directed to the Public Notice Portal, the official site for local authority and legal notices in the press.

Coverage area

The Advertiser's patch takes in the south-eastern corner of Dorset. Swanage is a Victorian seaside resort on the Jurassic Coast, built on the stone-quarrying and tourism trades. Wareham is an ancient Saxon walled town at the head of Poole Harbour, and Wool is a large village on the main road and rail route between the two. The Isle of Purbeck — not a true island but the peninsula bounded by the English Channel, the rivers Frome and Piddle and Poole Harbour — includes the villages of Corfe Castle, Worth Matravers, Langton Matravers, Kingston and Studland, all within the paper's natural circulation area. This is a district of dramatic coastline, heathland and working quarries, with an economy built on tourism, agriculture and commuting to Poole and Bournemouth.

Office and contact details

The Swanage & Wareham Advertiser is based at 21B Commercial Road, Swanage BH19 1DF, on one of the main commercial streets of the town centre. The published telephone number for the office is 01929 427428, with a fax line on 01929 427844, and the office is open Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. A High Street office in Swanage keeps the paper's reporters and advertising staff in daily contact with the town's traders, councils and community groups — the classic weekly-newspaper model of a visible town-centre presence. Business directories categorise the operation under publishing activities in the media industry, and the title is listed locally as a Swanage publisher.

Editorial focus

The paper's journalism is the classic weekly mix applied to a coastal and rural district: town and parish council business, planning applications, tourism and the visitor economy, the fishing and quarrying industries, school news, local sport and the community fundraising and charity stories that fill the social calendar of the Purbeck villages. Sport coverage follows the town's clubs, including Swanage & Wareham Rugby Football Club and the area's football, cricket and hockey sides. Seasonal stories — the summer influx of visitors, the winter storms on the Jurassic Coast, the Swanage Railway's heritage steam services — give the paper a rhythm tied to the tourist year.

Advertising and public notices

Like most local weeklies, the Advertiser depends on advertising from the businesses of its patch: hotels, guest houses and holiday parks, restaurants and cafés, estate agents, tradespeople and the shops of Swanage and Wareham town centres. It also carries statutory public notices — planning applications, traffic orders, licensing notices — which local authorities are required to publish in the local press. Public-notice enquiries are handled centrally by email at hd-classified@localiq.co.uk and by telephone on 01202 295555. Dorset Council has in the past included the paper's website among the trusted local news sites offered to businesses in county-backed advertising packages, underlining the title's standing with the local authority.

Place in Purbeck's local media

Swanage is served by several local news outlets, and the Advertiser is listed among them alongside the Purbeck Gazette, Swanage News and the Dorset Echo. The Dorset Echo, based in Weymouth, is the county's daily-heritage paper covering the west of the county, while the Advertiser's role is the closer, town-level coverage of Swanage, Wareham and the villages between them. In this crowded local media landscape, the Advertiser's distinguishing feature is its single-minded focus on the Purbeck peninsula — the only title whose whole patch is the district between Poole Harbour and the Jurassic Coast cliffs.

Local radio alongside the paper

The paper operates in a local media environment that includes a full roster of radio services. Local radio for the area comes from BBC Radio Solent on 96.1 FM, Heart South on 102.3 FM, Greatest Hits Radio South on 105.8 FM and Nation Radio South Coast on 106.6 FM, with the community station Purbeck Coast FM broadcasting locally on 101.2 FM. Against that broadcast competition, the Advertiser's printed and digital pages remain the district's dedicated record of council decisions, planning notices, court reports and the parish-level news that radio bulletins cannot carry in depth.

The Advertiser today

Publicly documented information about the title's circulation and founding date is limited, and this profile is confined to what can be verified from press directories, the Public Notice Portal, domain records, local authority materials and the paper's own published contact details. What is certain is its continuing role: a dedicated newspaper for Swanage, Wareham, Wool and the Isle of Purbeck, published from the town it serves by one of Britain's largest regional groups, and carrying the council news, sport, events and advertising of one of Dorset's most recognisable districts — the modern successor to George Willey's Swanage Times.
