Syandan TV
Syandan TV is a Bengali-language news channel based in Agartala, the capital of Tripura in Northeast India. Founded on 17 January 2022 by veteran journalist Subal Kumar Dey, it is the television arm of the Syandan media group, whose flagship Bengali daily newspaper, Syandan Patrika, has been published from Agartala since 1970. The channel was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Tripura, Biplab Kumar Deb, and broadcasts round-the-clock news focused on Tripura and Agartala, with talk shows, live coverage and digital streaming aimed at Bengali-speaking viewers in Tripura and the wider Northeast. Syandan TV represents the extension of one of Tripura's oldest and most independent-minded news institutions into television, carrying a newspaper tradition of more than five decades into the broadcast era.
Origins in Syandan Patrika
The story of Syandan TV begins with its sister publication. Syandan Patrika was founded by Subal Kumar Dey and first published as a weekly newspaper on 19 August 1970, becoming a daily newspaper in 1974. Published in Bengali as a broadsheet from Agartala, it grew into one of Tripura's leading dailies, with a reported circulation of 69,340 copies and a cover price of five rupees. The newspaper is published by the Syandan Group of Publications, with Subal Dey serving as both publisher and editor-in-chief. Its headquarters, Syandan Bhavan, stands on Sakuntala Road in Agartala, about twelve kilometres from the city's airport, and the group has maintained offices in cities including Kolkata, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Mumbai and Chennai. By the time Syandan TV was conceived, the Syandan name had been part of Tripura's daily life for over fifty years.
Founder: Subal Kumar Dey
Syandan TV's founder, Subal Kumar Dey, is one of Tripura's most senior journalists. Born into a Bengali family in the state, he founded Syandan Patrika as a young man in 1970 and has remained its chief editor for more than five decades, an unusually long tenure in Indian regional journalism. Beyond his own publications, Dey has held leading positions in the state's media institutions, serving as president of the Tripura Newspapers' Society and as president of the Agartala Press Club. He is also associated with Friends, a Tripura cricket club, reflecting his place in the state's civic life. In 2019 he published his Bengali autobiography, Drohokal, recounting fifty years in journalism. His wife, Kalyani Dey, a former Agartala municipal councillor, died on 23 February 2020. Dey's son Arindam Dey serves the group as photo editor and manager of Syandan Patrika, making Syandan a family-run media house across two generations.
Launch of the Channel
Syandan TV was founded on 17 January 2022, when the fifty-two-year-old newspaper group entered television for the first time. The launch was a notable public occasion in Tripura: the channel was inaugurated by Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, an endorsement that signalled the group's standing in the state, and the event was reported by Tripura's news outlets as the arrival of a sister company to Syandan Patrika. The timing placed the launch in the run-up to a politically active period in the state, when Bengali-language news television was an influential arena for Tripura's parties. For the Syandan group, television offered what print could not: live pictures, instant updates and talk-show debate, delivered by a newsroom whose brand had been built on print reporting since 1970.
Coverage: Tripura and the Northeast
Syandan TV's editorial focus is Tripura first. Its output covers Agartala city news, state government and politics, district news from across Tripura's eight districts, and the politics of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council, alongside Northeast regional news, national developments and talk shows. Its YouTube and social output illustrates the daily agenda: Legislative Assembly and party politics, court and council affairs, civic problems in towns such as Dharmanagar and Belonia, and protests and public grievances across the state. Broadcasting in Bengali, the language of the majority of Tripura's population and of its capital, the channel speaks directly to the state's largest audience, while its Agartala base places its reporters close to the secretariat, the High Court of Tripura and the state's political leadership.
Editorial Character Inherited from Print
The Syandan group's editorial reputation shapes expectations of its television service. Syandan Patrika's stated alignment is independent, and reference accounts describe its editorial line as politically and economically liberal with a known anti-establishment tone, a willingness to carry investigative reports, and campaigns credited with contributing to public causes, including the movement that led to India's Right to Information Act of 2005. The newspaper's newsroom scale, more than sixty journalists and over fifteen photojournalists in the state, gives the group a reporting depth that few Tripura media houses can match, and Syandan TV was launched to draw on that same journalistic infrastructure. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when Tripura's newspapers briefly stopped printing, Subal Dey was among the editors quoted in national coverage of the crisis in regional print media, underlining his role as a spokesman for the state's press.
Programmes and Presentation
Syandan TV operates as a rolling news channel, combining continuous bulletins with live broadcasts and talk shows. Its official YouTube channel carries live news and discussion programmes, and its presenting style follows the direct, Bengali-language conventions of Northeast regional news television: fast updates, on-screen headlines, and studio debate on the day's Tripura stories. The channel's promotional line promises viewers the latest news first, accurate news, at every moment, a positioning typical of competitive regional news markets. District reporting is a visible part of the mix, with stories filed from across the state rather than only from the capital, reflecting the newspaper group's long-established network of correspondents.
Digital and Social Presence
Like most regional channels launched in the 2020s, Syandan TV was built as a television and digital service together. It maintains an official YouTube channel streaming live news and talk shows, social media accounts on Instagram, Facebook under its Syandan Digital identity, and X under the Syandan TV handle, and it is integrated with the group's news website, syandanpatrika.in, and its e-paper application. For a channel serving a small state, digital distribution extends its reach to Tripura's considerable diaspora and to Bengali viewers elsewhere in the Northeast and in West Bengal. The group's print, television and digital arms cross-promote one another, with the newspaper's readership offering the channel an established audience base from its first day.
Place in Tripura's Media Landscape
Tripura's media market is small in population but rich in outlets, with several Bengali and Kokborok newspapers and a growing number of television and digital news services competing for attention in Agartala. Within that market, Syandan occupies a distinctive position as an independent, locally owned group whose flagship title predates the modern state media era, founded in 1970 and converted to a daily in 1974. Syandan TV's arrival in January 2022 meant that one of the state's two or three most established newspaper brands finally had a television voice, at a time when audiences were shifting decisively toward video. The channel's launch, inaugurated by the serving Chief Minister yet owned by a group known for an anti-establishment editorial tradition, captured the dual character of regional media in Northeast India: close to power in geography and access, independent in reputation.
Continuing Role
Syandan TV continues to broadcast from Agartala as the television face of the Syandan group, covering Tripura and Northeast news around the clock in Bengali. Its significance lies less in scale than in continuity: it connects the era of Syandan Patrika's founding in 1970, when Tripura journalism meant a weekly paper printed in Agartala, to the era of live-streamed, social-media-distributed video news. Under founder Subal Kumar Dey, whose career spans the entire history of his group, Syandan TV carries one of Tripura's oldest news brands into its second half-century, serving Bengali-speaking viewers in Tripura with the same locally rooted journalism that built the Syandan name in print.
