About Sylvan Lake News

Sylvan Lake News

Overview

The Sylvan Lake News is the community weekly newspaper of Sylvan Lake, the lakeside town in central Alberta west of Red Deer, and of the surrounding Red Deer County countryside. It publishes in print on Thursdays: the publisher's own page archive holds complete Thursday editions dated through the autumn of 2025 and the winter and spring of 2026, including issues of 19 February, 12 March, 2 April, 9 April and 23 April 2026. The paper is part of the Red Deer Advocate group of central Alberta weeklies published by Black Press, and its pages combine reporting produced for the Sylvan Lake market with regional coverage supplied by Advocate staff. Its subject matter is the ordinary business of a fast-growing resort and commuter town: council decisions, policing, schools, minor sport, service clubs, church and community events, public and legal notices, and the seasonal life of a community built around the lake that gives the town its name.

History

No founding date for the Sylvan Lake News is published in the sources consulted for this profile, and none is asserted here. The paper's documented modern era begins with Barry Hibbert, a career weekly-newspaper advertising executive who had worked for the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association (AWNA). According to his AWNA biography, Hibbert left the association's employ in 1993 and purchased the Sylvan Lake News, becoming a working publisher. In 1997 he founded two further AWNA member weeklies, the Eckville Echo and the Rimbey Review, building a small central Alberta group around the Sylvan Lake operation, which traded as Sylvan Lake News Ltd. Hibbert served as president of AWNA in 1998 and later sat on the board of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association, where he chaired the verified circulation committee during the period when the ComBase readership study was created.

In June 2011 Black Press acquired the Sylvan Lake News and the Eckville Echo from Barry and Darlene Hibbert. The News has since been published as one of the Red Deer Advocate's group of central Alberta weeklies, alongside titles in Lacombe, Ponoka, Rimbey, Stettler and the Pipestone country. The Advocate itself, Red Deer's daily-turned-twice-weekly, reduced its own print schedule in 2024, but the group weeklies, the News among them, have continued on their weekly cycles. The Advocate's Red Deer presses print the group's own daily and weekly products, the News included in that production family.

Hibbert's career is a useful window on the business the News came from. His AWNA biography credits him with creating "cluster marketing," an early method of packaging weekly-newspaper markets for national advertisers that the biography describes as a precursor of the geographic marketing systems the industry later adopted, and with bringing automobile dealer associations into weekly newspapers as advertisers. He chaired AWNA's advertising committee for three years and its government relations committee for one, sat on the Canadian Community Newspapers Association board as an Alberta representative, and chaired its verified circulation committee for two years, work that tightened the rules for circulation audits. It was that industry operator, not a distant chain, who owned the Sylvan Lake News for the eighteen years before the Black Press sale.

Programming and Content

The News covers Sylvan Lake town council closely, including the municipality's "Chatting with Council" sessions at which residents question councillors and, on occasion, the local RCMP detachment. Red Deer County council, whose jurisdiction wraps around the town, is a second municipal beat; county tax and budget decisions, including the county's April 2026 deliberations on holding the line on residential and non-residential rates, were reported in the paper by Advocate reporter Paul Cowley. Reporter Sarah Baker, identified in syndication records as a Black Press Media journalist with the Sylvan Lake News, files the paper's community coverage, from town safety campaigns and council outreach to a Sylvan Lake golfer's victory at the 2026 Alberta under-19 junior girls' championship in Sundre.

Around that local core sits the shared content of the Advocate group: provincial government and legislature coverage, agricultural and energy news for the central Alberta farm belt, and national reporting. The News is also distributed alongside the group's Central Alberta Life, a Thursday supplement the Advocate publishes for rural communities, which a group rate card listed at a total market circulation of 30,838. The paper also remains a vehicle for the statutory advertising on which rural municipalities and energy regulators rely; a March 2026 edition carried the legal-notices pages for a proposed 120-megawatt gas-fired power plant near Eckville, among other applications. Features such as the Sylvan Lake community profile published in April 2026, charting the town's growth of roughly 20 per cent between 2006 and 2016 and a further 7.9 per cent between 2016 and 2021, round out the mix. The paper's community texture shows through in smaller items as well: an October 2018 story traced a single Sylvan Lake paper route handed down between brothers, the elder of whom had delivered the News since 2010 to earn money for video games — a reminder that the weekly still reaches porches by carrier.

Audience and Reach

Sylvan Lake is one of Alberta's best-known summer destinations and, increasingly, a year-round commuter community for Red Deer. The News addresses that combined audience of permanent residents, county ratepayers and seasonal visitors. The paper's own community profile, published in its 9 April 2026 edition, put the town's median total income above $53,574 as of 2024, recorded that about two-thirds of its movers in the preceding five years had arrived from outside the town, and projected further growth of about 9.5 and 8.3 per cent in the periods through 2035. A Black Press rate card reproduced in industry references listed the paper as a seven-column Thursday tabloid with a total market circulation of 7,954; that figure is a dated publisher's number from the rate card and is given here only as such. No current audited circulation for the paper is published.

Digital Presence

The paper publishes online at sylvanlakenews.com, and Black Press maintains a page-by-page archive of its print editions, from which the paper's current Thursday publication schedule can be verified directly: editions of October 2025 and of February, March and April 2026 are all present in the archive. Sylvan Lake News stories are also distributed through the news-aggregation services that index Black Press Media content, which is how much of its town-level reporting reaches readers beyond the print run.

Ownership and Organisation

The Sylvan Lake News is owned by Black Press and published within its Red Deer Advocate group in the company's Prairie division. Before the June 2011 sale it was owned by Barry and Darlene Hibbert through Sylvan Lake News Ltd. The 2013 Standard Periodical Directory listed the paper's office at 103-5020 50A Street in Sylvan Lake, with Barry Hibbert as publisher and Steve Dills as editor; those names and that address are directory listings from the Hibbert era's end and should be checked against a current masthead before reuse.

Contact and Availability

The Sylvan Lake News publishes in print on Thursdays and online at sylvanlakenews.com. Directory listings for the paper have given its Sylvan Lake office telephone as (403) 887-2331 and its editorial email as editor@sylvanlakenews.com; both are reproduced here as published directory details, and the current masthead should be confirmed at the time of publication. Subscriptions and advertising are handled through Black Press's central Alberta operation alongside the other Advocate group weeklies.
