About Systems Engineering and Electronics

Systems Engineering and Electronics

Overview and identity

Systems Engineering and Electronics (Chinese: 系统工程与电子技术; pinyin: Xitong Gongcheng yu Dianzi Jishu) is a Chinese-language journal of systems engineering and electronics published in Beijing in association with China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC). Founded in 1979, it carries ISSN 1001-506X and covers systems engineering, radar, guidance and control, communications and electronic warfare. It has a separate English-language sister edition, the Journal of Systems Engineering and Electronics, established in 1990. International indexes record the Chinese journal from 1990–1991 and continuously from 2001.

The pairing in the title is deliberate. Systems engineering — the discipline of designing complex systems as integrated wholes — grew up alongside modern electronics in the defence and aerospace world, where a radar, a missile and its command system must be engineered together or not at all. This journal, founded in 1979 at the start of China's reform era, is the long-running Chinese venue where those two disciplines have been published as one field.

History and founding

The journal was founded in 1979, making it one of the older titles in this batch: a product of the late-1970s rebuilding of Chinese scientific publishing, when the aerospace and electronics ministries were founding journals to serve their rapidly expanding research systems. Its association with the aerospace industry — today represented by CASIC — placed it from the start inside the world of radar, missile and command-system engineering.

The journal's later history includes a significant act of internationalisation: in 1990 its sponsors launched the English-language Journal of Systems Engineering and Electronics (JSEE), a bimonthly sister journal jointly sponsored by the aerospace defence technology academy, the Chinese Society of Astronautics and the Systems Engineering Society of China, which went on to be indexed in SCI and EI. The Chinese journal continued in parallel — by 2026 it had reached volume 48 — giving the same research community both a domestic and an international voice.

Sponsorship and the English sister journal

The Chinese journal is published in Beijing in association with China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, and bibliometric records list the Chinese Institute of Electronics as publisher of record in international indexes. Its English sister's stated sponsors — the Defense Technology Academy of CASIC (in the sister journal's own account, of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation), the Chinese Society of Astronautics, the Systems Engineering Society of China and the Beijing Institute of Aerospace Information — show the coalition behind the title family: an industry academy, two learned societies and an information institute.

The sister journal's own description of the shared remit is the clearest statement of scope for both: system analysis, system modelling and simulation, military systems analysis, aircraft control, C3I, radar, information systems engineering, machine intelligence, information acquisition and processing and aerospace electronics, under a policy of 'combining depth and breadth, theory and application'. The Chinese journal pursues the same programme in Chinese, at greater length and volume.

Scope: systems engineering and military systems analysis

The systems-engineering half of the journal covers the methods by which complex systems are conceived, modelled, simulated, optimised and evaluated: system analysis, modelling and simulation, operations research and decision methods, reliability engineering, and the analysis of military systems — the effectiveness evaluation and operational research of weapons and defence systems that is a traditional strength of its sponsoring world.

This is the half of the journal that speaks to programme managers and systems architects as much as to bench engineers. Papers on simulation architectures, evaluation indices and decision support sit alongside the electronics papers, reflecting the journal's founding insight that modern defence and aerospace capability is a property of systems, not of components alone.

Scope: radar, guidance, communications and electronic warfare

The electronics half is dominated by radar — the journal is a major Chinese venue for radar signal processing, target detection and tracking, and radar system design — together with guidance and control of flight vehicles, communications, and electronic warfare: jamming, countermeasures and the contest for the electromagnetic spectrum. Recent indexed articles illustrate the fare: multi-station networking countermeasures against radar seekers, and integrated radar-jamming waveform design, both published in the journal in 2024–2026 with its DOI prefix 10.12305/j.issn.1001-506X.

These topics place the journal close to operational technology. Radar and electronic warfare are fields in which China invests heavily and publishes extensively, and the journal's monthly flow of papers — volume 48, issue 2 appeared in 2026 — makes it one of the principal open Chinese sources for the state of that work.

Indexing and metrics

SCImago records the journal (Xi Tong Gong Cheng Yu Dian Zi Ji Shu / Systems Engineering and Electronics, ISSN 1001-506X) with an h-index of 35 and SJR of about 0.236, categorised in electrical and electronic engineering (Q3) and control and systems engineering (Q4), with Scopus coverage 1990–1991 and 2001 to date. Its English sister is indexed in SCIE, EI and INSPEC, and both editions have been listed among China's internationally influential academic journals.

The Chinese journal is published with English abstracts and carries DOIs in the 10.12305 pattern visible in current indexing. Within China it is a core journal for the electronics and systems fields, and the pair of journals together — Chinese monthly and English bimonthly — form one of the more complete bilingual publishing arrangements in Chinese defence-related engineering.

Publication pattern

The journal is monthly: 2024's volume 46 ran to at least issue 9 by September, 2025's volume 47 to issue 3 by March, and 2026's volume 48 to issue 2 — a steady monthly cadence sustained across decades. Articles are research papers in Chinese with English titles and abstracts, organised within the journal's standing subject areas of systems engineering and electronics.

Monthly frequency at this longevity implies a large, stable submission flow from the aerospace and defence research system — institutes, universities of the defence sector and the electronics industry — and an editorial operation scaled to match. Few Chinese journals in any field have maintained a monthly schedule from the 1970s reform era to the present; this one's continuity is part of its authority.

Readership and authors

Readers are systems engineers, radar and EW specialists, guidance and control engineers, and the analysts who evaluate complex defence systems, in institutes, universities and industry. The journal serves both the designer of a radar waveform and the analyst modelling the campaign in which that radar fights — a breadth few journals attempt.

For external observers, the journal and its English sister together provide one of the most accessible open windows into Chinese defence electronics research: the sister journal in full English for the international audience, the Chinese journal for the complete domestic record. Both are used by researchers tracking radar, C3I and electronic-warfare developments worldwide.

Place in Chinese engineering publishing

Founded in 1979, industry-sponsored in Beijing, monthly for decades, and doubled by an SCI-indexed English sister since 1990, Systems Engineering and Electronics is one of the senior titles of Chinese defence-and-aerospace publishing. Its twin-discipline model anticipated the systems age of engineering, and its archive documents that age's arrival in China.

In the WorldNM directory it is profiled as a Beijing-based Chinese-language magazine-category journal. Its combination of age, frequency, industry backing and bilingual reach makes it among the most substantial publications in this China magazines batch.

A final point of record: the journal's article identifiers make its current publishing easy to verify. Recent papers carry DOIs in the pattern 10.12305/j.issn.1001-506X.year.issue.article — for example a radar-countermeasures paper in volume 48, issue 2 (2026) and an integrated radar-jamming waveform paper in volume 46, issue 9 (2024) — a continuous, checkable trail from the journal's 1979 print origins to its present digital form.
