About Talent Canada

Talent Canada

Overview

Talent Canada is a business media brand published by Annex Business Media that makes the case for investing in people to the people who hold the purse strings. Its tagline is "Driving Business through Investment in People," and it was designed from the outset for an audience most human resources publications do not reach: C-suite executives and senior decision-makers, at companies of all sizes across Canada, who do not hold HR titles but who control budgets and strategy. It argues, in business terms, that good people practices drive productivity, reduce turnover, improve culture and strengthen workplaces. The brand combines a website publishing daily workplace news, a weekly email newswire, print magazine issues, a podcast and virtual events, and it also reaches practising HR professionals. Its premise is that talent strategy belongs in the boardroom, not only in the HR department, and its content is pitched accordingly: practical, jargon-light and framed around business outcomes such as retention, productivity and risk.

History

Talent Canada was launched in December 2019 by Annex Business Media. The brand was created by Todd Humber, an Annex group publisher and an award-winning workplace journalist who has covered HR, employment law and workplace safety for roughly 25 years and had previously been publisher and editor-in-chief of Canadian HR Reporter at Thomson Reuters; conference biographies for the Human Resources Professionals Association credit him directly with launching Talent Canada in 2019. In May 2020, Marcel Vander Wier, who had joined Annex the previous October as editor of OHS Canada after a newspaper and Thomson Reuters career, was named editor of Talent Canada as well, while Humber continued as its senior editor and group publisher. In November 2021 Humber also became publisher of the sister brand OHS Canada, overseeing a group of Annex titles that included Talent Canada.

The young brand earned early industry recognition: its Winter 2021 issue, produced in the middle of the pandemic with coverage of the future of the office, salary-increase uncertainty, business relief and virtual health care, placed in the Top 10 for Best Single Issue in the 2022 Tabbie Awards, the international B2B media competition run by Trade, Association and Business Publications International. Humber has since left Annex; he is now publisher and editor-in-chief of HR Law Canada and HR News Canada, published by North Wall Media. Talent Canada continues to publish under Annex, with its website carrying new features and daily workplace news through 2026.

Content and Coverage

The editorial mix blends original reporting, expert commentary and legal analysis aimed at senior leaders. Coverage spans recruitment and retention, leadership, workplace culture, compensation, employment law and court and tribunal decisions affecting employers, occupational health and safety, mental health and well-being, diversity and inclusion, and the changing nature of work, from remote work to the skills implications of artificial intelligence. Its daily workplace news file follows Canadian labour relations closely — labour board rulings, contract talks and strike mandates — with August 2026 items covering a British Columbia labour board arbitration order involving Amazon workers, a tentative WestJet cabin crew deal and the Bank of Canada governor's evidence on replacement workers. Explaining the brand's founding idea in 2020, Humber said, "We firmly believe that great things happen for employers when they treat their employees well," adding that Talent Canada "helps make the case for investments in people that drive productivity, reduce turnover, improve culture and just make the workplace stronger." Humber's own columns for the brand were known for walking readers through Canadian employment law cases — wrongful dismissal, just cause, accommodation — and drawing out the practical lessons for employers, and that case-driven approach remains visible in the site's workplace news and commentary.

Beyond articles, the brand produces the Talent Show podcast for HR professionals and senior leaders, virtual conferences and roundtables, including an "In Her Shoes" series on women's health in the workplace produced with Sun Life in 2023, whose panels brought together speakers from Cadillac Fairview, the Mental Health Commission of Canada and the Menopause Foundation of Canada, and joint virtual events with sister publication OHS Canada, such as a conference on opioids in the workplace and the ProtectHer women's safety leadership symposium held in March 2024. Its website sections include features, workplace news, global workplace news, columns and blogs, announcements and appointments, webinars and an events calendar. Its 2026 features have examined generational dynamics as a competitive advantage, one major employer's path to Rainbow Registered recognition for LGBTQ2S+ inclusion, the workplace skills that people still perform better than artificial intelligence, and practical guidance such as making meetings work better for employees on the autism spectrum — a mix that shows the brand's blend of strategy, law and day-to-day management advice.

Audience and Reach

Talent Canada's stated target audience is senior decision-makers: Annex describes having compiled a CASL-compliant list of 50,000 C-suite professionals for the brand, and at the time of its editor's appointment in 2020 the company described an audience of 50,000 CASL-compliant email subscribers holding director-level-and-above titles at organisations across Canada. Those are the publisher's own figures, presented here as such. In practice the brand is read by a mix of executives, business owners, HR professionals and front-line leaders who deal with workforce issues, and its events and podcast partnerships with insurers, law firms and professional associations extend its reach into the Canadian workplace community.

Digital Presence

Talent Canada's website, talentcanada.ca, publishes features and a daily flow of Canadian and global workplace news, and was updated with current stories in the summer of 2026, covering subjects such as generational dynamics in the workforce, inclusive workplace recognition and the human skills artificial intelligence cannot replicate. Readers can subscribe to the brand's email newswire, listen to the Talent Show podcast, watch webinar and roundtable recordings and browse its events listings. The magazine's print issues have also been published in digital form, including the award-winning Winter 2021 edition. Like other Annex brands, Talent Canada is active on social media, where it promotes its journalism and events.

Ownership and Organisation

Talent Canada is published by Annex Business Media, a privately held Canadian business-to-business publisher headquartered in Simcoe, Ontario, which describes itself as Canada's largest B2B media company, with more than 60 industry titles spanning manufacturing, agriculture, construction, forestry and workplace media. The brand was launched within Annex's workplace group alongside OHS Canada, its occupational health and safety sister publication, and it shared editorial leadership with that title for much of its life; Annex's brand portfolio has listed Anne Beswick as the group publisher responsible for Talent Canada. Annex completed an employee-management buyout in 2024, becoming an employee- and management-owned company led by chief executive Scott Jamieson. Annex publicly described the strategy behind Talent Canada at its launch as building a new kind of HR publication: one designed to catch the attention of professionals who do not hold HR titles but understand the value of people.

Contact and Availability

Talent Canada is published by Annex Business Media, 105 Donly Drive South, Simcoe, Ontario, telephone 519-428-3471. Its website, talentcanada.ca, is freely accessible, and readers can sign up there for its email newswire, podcast and virtual events. The magazine was launched with four print issues a year alongside its digital products, and digital editions of its print issues are available through its website. Its events calendar also lists workplace and HR gatherings across Canada, making the site a practical starting point for Canadian employers tracking the people-management agenda.
