About TATV

TATV

TATV, short for Televisi Terang Abadi, Terang Abadi Television, is a local television station based in Surakarta, also known as Solo, in Central Java, Indonesia. It was the first private local television station in the city of Surakarta, founded on 1 July 2003 and officially inaugurated by the Governor of Central Java on 1 September 2004. Operated by PT Televisi Terang Abadi and owned by the TA Media Group, it broadcasts in Indonesian and Javanese from its headquarters at Jalan Brigjen Katamso No. 173, Mojosongo, Jebres, Surakarta. Its slogan since 2004 has been TATV Manteb, an acronym of Masa Kini dan Tetap Berbudaya, Contemporary and Still Cultured, which summarises its formula of current information and entertainment that does not abandon Javanese local culture. Today it broadcasts digitally on 29 UHF for Yogyakarta and Solo and on 30 UHF for Semarang, in 1080p high definition.

Surakarta's first local television station

TATV was born from a reading of Surakarta's potential. Institutional histories of the station describe its founders studying the development of Indonesian television, public and private, and the television business, and concluding that Surakarta offered exceptional material for a local broadcaster: a strategically placed city in the Joglosemar growth triangle of Yogyakarta, Solo and Semarang, a centre of Central Javanese culture, and a city with rapidly growing business and tourism. Against that background, PT Televisi Terang Abadi was established to build a station that would lift the region's potential professionally, actively and creatively, and present attractive programming to viewers.

The formal steps were quick. The station was founded on 1 July 2003, received a trial broadcast permit under Central Java Governor's Decree No. 483/129/2003, began trial broadcasting in April 2004 on analogue channel 50 UHF, and was officially inaugurated by the Governor of Central Java on 1 September 2004. In its trial period it broadcast only five hours a day, from 17.00 to 22.00, while preparing to expand. From the beginning it declared its intention to participate in realising the vision and mission of the city of Surakarta, to broaden viewers' horizons and to help improve the morals, education, culture and welfare of society within the framework of the unitary Republic of Indonesia, using the modern medium of television.

Growth to an eighteen-hour local service

From its five-hour trial schedule, TATV expanded steadily. Accounts of the station record it passing fifteen hours of broadcasting a day and reaching eighteen hours a day by the end of 2007, a pattern it has maintained in the form of a broadcast day running from 06.00 to 00.00 Western Indonesian Time. Around 60 percent of that output was produced in-house, a high local-production ratio for an Indonesian local station, made up of on-air and off-air programmes, live broadcasts and outdoor events. The station presented itself not only as a broadcaster but as an events presence in its city, staging and supporting off-air promotions and concerts in Solo in its growth years.

Its technical reach matched its ambitions. Early institutional accounts describe a 10-kilowatt transmitter system from Italy, sited at Patuk in Gunungkidul alongside national television towers, carrying the signal across the Subosukawonosraten area, the regencies around Solo: Surakarta itself, Boyolali, Sukoharjo, Karanganyar, Wonogiri, Sragen and Klaten, together with Yogyakarta province areas including Bantul and Sleman, and onward to Magelang, Kebumen, Kudus and their surroundings. Later coverage summaries extend the list across the Yogyakarta and Solo region and parts of Central Java including Pati, Wonosobo, Temanggung and Ngawi, giving a pioneering Solo station a genuinely regional audience.

Ownership and the TA Media Group

TATV is owned by the TA Media Group, also rendered as Terang Abadi Media Group, and operated by PT Televisi Terang Abadi from the group's offices on Jalan Brigjen Katamso in the Mojosongo district of Surakarta. Indonesian Wikipedia lists Sangaji TV as its sister station, with TATV itself as the flagship and parent station of its small group, a reversal of the usual Indonesian pattern in which a Solo station would be the relay of a Jakarta network. Directory descriptions likewise treat TATV as an independent local station whose group also manages radio and digital media in the region, keeping its centre of gravity in Surakarta rather than in the capital.

The station's stated vision is to make a meaningful contribution to the progress of the region and of its viewing community in every field of life, through changes in paradigms of thought and behaviour. Its mission, repeated across its institutional documents, is to be a television that enlightens the way its viewers think and behave, toward the development of the whole Indonesian person, and its goal is to build better patterns of thought in society. That language of enlightenment, pencerahan, runs through the station's self-description: TATV defines itself as a provider of entertainment, a sharp and direct tool of local information, and a source of enlightenment for viewers' thinking and behaviour, without leaving local culture behind and while keeping pace with the times.

Manteb: contemporary and still cultured

The slogan TATV Manteb has been attached to the station since 2004. Manteb is presented as an acronym of Masa Kini dan Tetap Berbudaya, of the present day and still cultured, and it functions as an editorial rule as much as a marketing line. Institutional accounts explain that as tastes in Solo, Yogyakarta and the surrounding region shifted toward the culture and trends of big cities such as Jakarta, TATV set itself to answer with content adjusted to what audiences wanted without surrendering the local cultural values for which the Solo region is known. Anniversary slogans recorded over the years, from Yang Ter8aik for its eighth year and Semarak 10 for its tenth to Rise Up, Selalu 15timewa and Karya 19, chart a station conscious of building a long local history in public.

The clearest expression of the Manteb formula is language. TATV built a strong strand of programming in Javanese, including news in regional language. Its programme Kabar Awan, Daytime News, became the subject of sociolinguistic research on the levels of Javanese speech, the tingkat tutur, used by its newsreaders, which found the full range of Javanese registers in use, from ngoko lugu to krama alus, with choices shaped by formality, familiarity and respect for the viewer addressed. A local station broadcasting the news in carefully graded Javanese, rather than only in national Indonesian, is the Manteb idea in daily practice, and academic research on TATV's programming strategy has examined how the station used efficiency measures and classic programming strategy to keep its Javanese-language programmes alive against commercial pressure.

News, culture and entertainment programming

News is one pillar of the schedule. The station's listed news programmes include TA Jateng & DIY, TA Petang, TA Sandyakala, described as news in refined Javanese, TA Sepekan and the sports news strand SPORTA, alongside the earlier and widely studied Javanese bulletins Kabar Awan and Kabar Wengi and the local titles Surakarta Hari Ini and Jogja Hari Ini, Solo Today and Yogyakarta Today, which reflect its twin focus on the Solo and Yogyakarta audiences. Talk and discussion formats have included Fokus Kita and Special Talkshow, and its interactive live programming has included Jagongan Pasar Gede, named for Solo's historic market, in earlier programme accounts.

Culture and entertainment form the second pillar. Listed lifestyle and cultural programmes include Dolan-Dolan, Ragam Kuliner, Ragam Warna, Wisata Kita and Wayang Kulit, the shadow-puppet theatre at the heart of Javanese performance. Music programming runs strongly through the schedule, with Area Dangdut, Keroncong Hits, Langgam Gandrung and Nyampursari Neh, alongside the campursari music that earlier programme guides list among viewer favourites. Religious programming spans traditions, with listed titles including Anugrah-Nya, Holyland Journey, Kidung Surgawi, Miracle and Sentuhan Ilahi, and the schedule has also carried children's animation through Spacetoon, advertorial and campus strands such as Kabar Kampus and UNS Menyapa, linking the station to Surakarta's Sebelas Maret University, and home-shopping and special-event coverage.

Early network affiliations

Although TATV is an independent flagship today, its early years included affiliations with international and national content brands. Indonesian Wikipedia records that it was affiliated with VH1 from 2005 to 2008 and with MNC News from 2006 to 2008, arrangements typical of young Indonesian local stations filling long broadcast days while their own production capacity grew. The affiliations ended as the station's in-house ratio rose toward its documented 60 percent pattern, and TATV's subsequent identity has been that of a self-supplied local broadcaster, originating its own news, talk, music and cultural programmes for Central Java and Yogyakarta rather than relaying a Jakarta parent station.

Recognition from the Central Java broadcasting commission

TATV is one of the most decorated local stations in its province. Its honours list, drawn from the Central Java regional broadcasting commission awards, the Anugerah Penyiaran KPID Jawa Tengah, includes Best Television Feature Programme, Best Television Talkshow Programme and Best Local Television in 2012; Best Children's Television Programme, Best Television Talkshow and Best Local Television again in 2013; Best Local Private Television Broadcasting Institution in 2014; Best Children's Programme, Best Feature, Best Public Service Announcement and Best Local Private Television Broadcasting Institution in 2015; the equivalent best local private television award in 2017; Best Television Public Service Announcement and Best Television Talkshow for Jagongan Sar Gedhe in 2018; and further public-service honours in 2019, including a third place in the 2019 election public-service announcement competition. The pattern across seven award years matters: the station was repeatedly judged the province's best local television service while also winning for features, talk shows and children's programmes, the genres at the core of its schedule.

Digital broadcasting and present reach

TATV has completed the same digital migration as the rest of Indonesian television. Its analogue home was channel 50 UHF. In digital terrestrial broadcasting it is listed on 29 UHF for the Yogyakarta and Solo service area and on 30 UHF for Semarang, with a 1080p high-definition picture format in 16:9. Surakarta's analogue services ended in December 2022 under the national analogue switch-off programme, and TATV's digital presence in both the Solo-Yogyakarta and Semarang multiplex areas gives the Surakarta flagship a wider digital footprint than its original single-transmitter analogue service, while its programming remains centred on Solo Raya, the greater Surakarta region, and its Yogyakarta audience.

Two decades after its trial broadcasts, TATV's significance is that of a survivor with a clear formula. Many Indonesian local stations founded in the post-1998 liberalisation of broadcasting have closed, been absorbed into national networks or become relays. TATV instead remains an independent, group-owned flagship in its home city, still headquartered on Jalan Brigjen Katamso in Mojosongo, still broadcasting long days with a majority of in-house production, and still organised around the promise in its 2004 slogan: to be contemporary, and still cultured. For the WorldNM directory, it is recorded as the flagship local station of Surakarta, the pioneer that brought private local television to Solo and carried Javanese language and culture into the centre of a modern broadcast schedule.
