About Taunus-Zeitung

Taunus-Zeitung

The Taunus-Zeitung is a daily regional newspaper serving the Hochtaunuskreis district in Hesse, published as a head paper (Kopfblatt) of the Frankfurter Neue Presse (FNP). It is the market-leading daily newspaper in the Hochtaunuskreis, the affluent district north of Frankfurt that includes Bad Homburg, Oberursel, Königstein, Kronberg, and Usingen. The paper's roots reach back to 1877, when the first issue of the Königsteiner-Kronberger Anzeiger appeared; the name Taunus-Zeitung dates to October 1880, and the paper has existed in its current form as an FNP head paper since 2 January 1970. Published Monday through Saturday, it combines a dedicated local section for the Hochtaunuskreis with the FNP's regional, national, and international coverage. Its digital home is fnp.de, the shared portal of the Frankfurter Neue Presse's editions.

Overview

The Taunus-Zeitung serves one of Germany's most prosperous regions: the Hochtaunuskreis, a district of around 240,000 inhabitants in the Taunus hills north of Frankfurt, known for its villa suburbs, its financial-sector commuters, the spa town of Bad Homburg, and the historic towns of Königstein and Kronberg. The paper appears Monday through Saturday as a Kopfblatt of the FNP — a formally separate title with its own name and local section, sharing the parent paper's supraregional pages.

The FNP publishes several such head papers, each covering a distinct region: the Höchster Kreisblatt for Frankfurt's western districts and the Main-Taunus-Kreis, the Nassauische Neue Presse for the Limburg area, the Bad Vilbeler Neue Presse for the Wetterau, and the Neu-Isenburger Neue Presse for the Offenbach district. The Taunus-Zeitung, incorporating the Usinger Neue Presse, is the edition for the Hochtaunuskreis.

The readership consists of the district's established households — including many Frankfurt professionals, business leaders, and long-established Taunus families — as well as local businesses and civic institutions. As the market leader among dailies in the Hochtaunuskreis, the paper is the central forum for the district's public life.

History

The Taunus-Zeitung's origins lie in the Königsteiner-Kronberger Anzeiger, whose first issue appeared in 1877 as the official gazette of the Königstein administrative district. From October 1880, the paper bore the name Taunus-Zeitung. It chronicled the Taunus region's development through the German Empire — including Bad Homburg's rise as a fashionable spa town favored by European royalty — the Weimar Republic, and the upheavals of the twentieth century.

The modern paper was created on 2 January 1970, when several local papers were merged into the new Taunus-Zeitung as a head paper of the Frankfurter Neue Presse: alongside the Königstein-based Taunus-Zeitung itself, "Der Taunusbote", the "Taunusanzeiger" from Oberursel, and the "Kronberger Anzeiger" were consolidated into the new title. This merger reflected the broader consolidation of the Frankfurt-area press under the FNP umbrella.

The FNP itself was founded on 15 April 1946 under an American military government license (license No. 32 in the US zone), granted to Hugo Stenzel and August Heinrich Berning as a conservative counterpart to the left-liberal Frankfurter Rundschau. In 2018, the FNP's ownership passed to the Zeitungsholding Hessen, ending the FAZ group's majority holding. The paper is published and printed by the Frankfurter Societäts-Medien GmbH and has appeared in Berlin format since 2025.

Coverage and Content

The Taunus-Zeitung's local section covers the Hochtaunuskreis's municipalities: Bad Homburg, the district seat and spa town; Oberursel, the district's largest city; Friedrichsdorf, Königstein, Kronberg, Steinbach, and the northern communities around Usingen, Neu-Anspach, and Grävenwiesbach. Municipal politics, district affairs, planning decisions in one of Hesse's most sought-after housing markets, and school policy are core topics.

The district's character as Frankfurt's affluent northern suburbs shapes the news agenda: financial-sector developments, the real estate market, transport connections (including the Taunusbahn and S-Bahn links to Frankfurt), and the preservation of the Taunus landscape against development pressure. Bad Homburg's spa tradition, the Kurpark, and the town's cultural institutions — including the Sinclair-Haus and the historic Kurhaus — feature regularly, as do the Opel Zoo in Kronberg and the Hessenpark open-air museum in Neu-Anspach.

Beyond the local pages, readers receive the FNP's full offering: Frankfurt city news, Hesse state politics from Wiesbaden, national and international coverage, business, culture, and sports, including Eintracht Frankfurt. Special interest pages and seasonal supplements round out the paper.

Organization and Ownership

The Taunus-Zeitung is published as a head paper of the Frankfurter Neue Presse by the Frankfurter Societäts-Medien GmbH, based in Frankfurt am Main. The FNP belongs to the Zeitungsholding Hessen, which acquired the FAZ group's majority stake in 2018 with cartel office approval. The FNP's editor-in-chief is Max Rempel, according to published sources.

Within the FNP's family of head papers, the Taunus-Zeitung maintains its own local editorial identity for the Hochtaunuskreis, with the Usinger Neue Presse as its northern edition. Central functions — the supraregional news pages, printing, and the fnp.de digital platform — are shared across the FNP's editions.

Readership and Market Position

The Taunus-Zeitung is the market leader among daily newspapers in the Hochtaunuskreis, a position it has held through the consolidation of the district's local press. Its main competitors are the Frankfurter Rundschau's regional coverage and the FAZ's Rhein-Main section, but neither maintains a dedicated Hochtaunuskreis daily to rival the Taunus-Zeitung's local presence.

The district's affluence gives the paper an advertising market richer than most regional dailies enjoy: luxury retail, real estate, automotive, financial services, and high-end gastronomy advertisers target the Taunus readership. Like all German regional dailies, the paper faces long-term circulation pressure from demographic change and digital competition, addressed through the fnp.de platform, e-paper editions, and digital subscriptions.

The Hochtaunuskreis: Germany's Affluent North

The Taunus-Zeitung's circulation area is among the most prosperous districts in Germany. The Hochtaunuskreis consistently ranks at the top of German purchasing-power and income statistics: its villa suburbs in Königstein, Kronberg, and Bad Homburg house Frankfurt's financial elite, while the district's towns offer some of the country's most expensive real estate. This affluence shapes the paper in every respect — from the luxury advertisers in its pages to the preoccupations of its readers.

The district's news agenda reflects this: debates over development versus landscape preservation in the Taunus hills, the capacity of the S-Bahn and road connections carrying thousands of daily commuters to Frankfurt, the international schools serving the expatriate community, and the cultural institutions — from the Bad Homburg Kurhaus concerts to the Kronberg Academy's classical music programs — that cater to a demanding audience. At the same time, the northern part of the district around Usingen and Grävenwiesbach is more traditionally rural, and the paper bridges these two worlds: the Frankfurt-oriented south and the Taunus-rooted north. Few German regional papers serve a readership as economically distinctive as the Taunus-Zeitung's, and its market-leader position rests on understanding both halves of the district.

Digital Presence

The Taunus-Zeitung's digital home is fnp.de, the Frankfurter Neue Presse's online portal, which publishes local news from the Hochtaunuskreis alongside the FNP's broader Frankfurt and Hesse coverage. The portal operates a digital subscription model with e-paper replica editions of each head paper, newsletters, apps, and online advertising inventory.

The FNP's digital strategy serves the distinct audiences of its head papers while maintaining a unified platform. Social media channels distribute Taunus stories to younger readers, and the portal's regional sections allow Hochtaunuskreis readers to follow district news online. The paper's market-leader position in print extends to a strong digital presence in the district.
