About Technology Decisions
Technology Decisions
Overview
Technology Decisions is an Australian business-technology publication for senior information technology professionals and business leaders, published by Westwick-Farrow Media (WF Media) from Sydney. Its own summary of its brief is "news, insight and technological developments for information technology professionals", and it covers the decisions enterprise and government IT leaders make about strategy, security, infrastructure and emerging technology. The title began as a print magazine with an accompanying website and today operates as a digital-first service built around its website and a free weekly eNewsletter.
The publication is active in 2026. Its website carried new articles dated up to 15 October 2026 when reviewed — including analysis of AI governance, cybersecurity and quantum computing — with a rolling news service updated through October 2026.
History
Technology Decisions is published by Westwick-Farrow Media, a business-to-business publisher founded in 1981 by Adrian Farrow and Edwin Westwick, two executives from the former Thomson Publications. Their first title, What's New in Electronics, also appeared in 1981, built around product news and a reader-enquiry feedback system that connected readers directly with suppliers — a model the group applied across a growing stable of industrial and technology titles over the following decades, including Voice+Data, its magazine for the converging IT and communications sectors.
Technology Decisions was launched by Westwick-Farrow as a new IT business magazine, in print with the website technologydecisions.com.au alongside it; the international magazine industry body FIPP reported the launch at the time. The website's news archive runs back to February 2012 and also preserves older material from the group's earlier IT publishing, including a "Predictions for 2010" feature. The title became the group's flagship brand for the IT sector — its stablemate GovTech Review, the public-sector technology title discussed below in the group's history, is described by the publisher as the offspring of "its parent tech brand Technology Decisions".
The group's digital operations were established well before the magazine's launch. By 2010 Westwick-Farrow had been working for four years in partnership with the United States technology media company TechTarget, providing Australia–New Zealand content for TechTarget's local sites; in that year TechTarget acquired the three ANZ websites outright, with Westwick-Farrow's editorial team continuing to produce ANZ-specific content and its sales team continuing to represent the sites in Australia and New Zealand. The episode documents the group's early shift into digital publishing alongside its established print stable.
The publisher itself changed hands in the period after the launch. AdNews reported that Universal Magazines had acquired the Westwick-Farrow Media business from founding owners Adrian and Yvonne Farrow after six months of negotiations, with the business retaining its staff and its office at Wahroonga in Sydney, and long-serving associate publisher Geoff Hird staying on as Publisher of the business. WF Media's current corporate description states that it "is an associate company of Universal Media Co (formerly Universal Magazines)", the consumer publisher whose niches span homes, health, craft and construction. Under that ownership the B2B group continued to trade as Westwick-Farrow Media and later moved its Sydney base to North Ryde.
Programming and Content
The website organises its coverage into channels that mirror the working concerns of IT leadership: IT Management carries strategy, governance and CIO-focused analysis; Security covers cybersecurity threats, identity, quantum readiness and regulation; Data Centres covers facilities, power and AI infrastructure; Networking and Wireless & Mobility carry communications and connectivity products and news; Convergence covers unified communications and collaboration; and a futureED strand covers education technology for schools and universities. October 2026 coverage illustrates the mix: an analysis piece on democratising AI governance for employees, a warning about cost-cutting on AI tokens increasing security risk, reporting of Gartner projections for quantum computing revenue, a survey story on CIOs taking responsibility for workforce redesign, and news items from vendors and agencies including the Australian Cyber Security Centre.
Alongside reported news and analysis, the site runs a Featured Products service — detailed product entries for equipment such as KVM switches, access points and remote management hardware — which continues the product-information tradition on which the publishing group was founded. Longer features, case studies and opinion contributions from industry practitioners sit alongside the daily news flow, and a weekly eNewsletter distils the week's articles, opinion and news for subscribers. Content from sister titles across the WF Media network is also surfaced on the site, reflecting the group's shared-platform model.
Audience and Reach
The title's stated audience is senior IT professionals and business leaders, from small and medium businesses through to enterprise and government. Subscriptions to its weekly eNewsletters are free to qualified industry professionals, the group's standard controlled-circulation model. WF Media as a whole says its channels reach a combined audience of more than 250,000 qualified decision-makers across Australia and New Zealand — that is the publisher's own current figure for the whole group, not for Technology Decisions alone, and no title-specific audited figure is asserted here. The publisher states that its circulation figures follow the rules of the Circulations Audit Board. Within the stable, Technology Decisions is positioned as the generalist IT management brand, sitting above the group's sector-specific technology titles in areas such as government, education, electrical contracting, process control and critical communications. The brand is also used as a platform from which the group seeds new launches: when Westwick-Farrow launched Field Service Business, a quarterly magazine and digital channel for the field service sector, the launch was announced on Technology Decisions, with the new title's audience drawn in part from the existing readerships of the group's IT, electrical, comms, safety and process brands.
Digital Presence
The website technologydecisions.com.au is now the publication's primary edition, publishing news daily and feature articles weekly, with an archive extending back to 2012. The print edition with which the title launched is no longer listed among the publisher's print magazines: the site's own magazine page presents GovTech Review, ECD and Critical Comms as WF Media's print titles, and Technology Decisions' subscription offer centres on its free weekly eNewsletters and online access. Readers subscribe through the site, which also carries the sister futureED education-technology service. WF Media promotes its brands jointly, and Technology Decisions content is cross-linked from the group's other technology channels.
Ownership and Organisation
Technology Decisions is published by Westwick-Farrow Media Pty Ltd, trading as WF Media, an associate company of Universal Media Co. The group publishes a dozen targeted, multiplatform media brands across technology, food, health science and industry — including GovTech Review, ECD (Electrical+Comms+Data), Critical Comms, What's New in Electronics, LabOnline, Process Online, Food Processing, Safety Solutions, Sustainability Matters and Hospital + Healthcare — and runs industry events through its WFevents arm, including the Comms Connect series. Geoff Hird, a Westwick-Farrow executive of more than two decades' standing and a former chairman of Publishers Australia, remained Publisher of the business through the Universal acquisition and was still quoted in that role in the group's announcements in later years. The title's articles are produced by the group's editorial team in Sydney; recent website articles are largely unbylined in the form published online, and no current editor's name is published on the site, so none is asserted here.
