About Telemundo

Telemundo is an American Spanish-language terrestrial television network owned by NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, a division of NBCUniversal, which is itself a subsidiary of Comcast. Headquartered in Miami, Florida, with major production facilities in the suburb of Doral, it is the second-largest Spanish-language television network in the United States and one of the largest producers of Spanish-language content in the world. Its programming, aimed at Spanish-speaking audiences in the United States and distributed internationally, spans telenovelas and serialized dramas, news, reality television, sports, and films, and its content is syndicated to more than 100 countries in over 35 languages.

History and Origins

Telemundo's roots trace to WKAQ-TV in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the island's first television station, which signed on in 1954 and branded itself "Telemundo," combining the Spanish words for television and world. The national network was founded in 1984 as NetSpan, formed by the owners of WNJU in the New York market and KSTS in San Jose, California. The network expanded with KVEA in Los Angeles in 1985 and added WSCV in Miami and WKAQ-TV in San Juan in 1986. In 1987, NetSpan changed its name to Telemundo, adopting the brand of the Puerto Rican station, and the Reliance Capital Group merged its stations into the Telemundo Group, which went public and launched the network nationally. Additional stations were purchased in Houston and San Antonio the same year. By the early 1990s, Telemundo was producing 24-hour news and original telenovelas syndicated to international markets, though a setback came when Mexico's Televisa purchased the production house generating many of its shows, forcing the network to reinvent its programming strategy.

Ownership Changes

Telemundo changed hands several times during its formative decades. In 1997, Liberty Media and Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired a controlling interest in the Telemundo Group. NBC then purchased Telemundo in 2001 for a reported 1.98 billion dollars, a landmark deal that made the Spanish-language network a sister property of the NBC broadcast network. The acquisition gave Telemundo access to far greater resources and a broader platform, and under NBCUniversal, and later Comcast following Comcast's acquisition of NBCUniversal, the network invested heavily in original production. Today Telemundo operates as the centerpiece of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, which also encompasses the Universo cable channel aimed at younger viewers, Telemundo Digital Media, the Puerto Rico station WKAQ-TV, and the international distribution arm Telemundo Internacional.

Programming and Telenovelas

Telenovelas and serialized dramas are the heart of Telemundo's prime-time schedule. Unlike some competitors that rely heavily on imported shows, Telemundo produces much of its own programming at its Miami studios, where the large majority of its telenovelas have historically been recorded. Landmark productions include La Reina del Sur, based on the Arturo Perez-Reverte novel, which became one of the network's most-watched series ever; El Senor de los Cielos, the long-running narco-drama that anchored prime time for years; and Sin Senos Si Hay Paraiso. The network's reality slate includes the long-running courtroom show Caso Cerrado with Ana Maria Polo, the competition series Exatlon Estados Unidos, La Casa de los Famosos, and Top Chef VIP. Telemundo also airs the Billboard Latin Music Awards, a fixture on its schedule since 1999, and a lineup of talk shows, variety programs, and Spanish-dubbed films.

News Division

Noticias Telemundo is the network's news operation, providing national newscasts, investigative reporting, and special event coverage for Spanish-speaking audiences. Its flagship programs include the evening newscast Noticias Telemundo, the midday Noticias Telemundo Mediodia, the late-night Noticias Telemundo en la Noche, and the morning show Hoy Dia. The long-running investigative and magazine program Al Rojo Vivo, on the air since 2002, blends hard news with human-interest storytelling. Telemundo's news division has invested in political coverage, debates, and town halls aimed at Hispanic voters, recognizing the growing electoral influence of the Latino electorate. Its journalists cover immigration, border issues, Latin American affairs, and U.S. politics with bureaus across the country, and the division has earned recognition for reporting that serves communities often underserved by English-language media.

Sports Coverage

Sports are a major pillar of Telemundo's identity through Telemundo Deportes. The network holds Spanish-language U.S. broadcast rights to the FIFA World Cup, making it the destination for soccer's biggest tournament for Hispanic viewers, and it has covered multiple World Cups with extensive studio programming. Its soccer portfolio has included Liga MX matches, featuring clubs such as Chivas Guadalajara, Tigres UANL, and FC Juarez, as well as Premier League coverage and Olympic Games broadcasts under the Juegos Olimpicos banner. Telemundo also carries NBC Sunday Night Football in Spanish, extending the NFL's premier weekly game to Spanish-speaking audiences. The combination of the World Cup, Mexican league soccer, and the NFL gives the network one of the most formidable sports lineups in Spanish-language American television.

Stations and Distribution

Telemundo reaches American viewers through a network of owned-and-operated stations and affiliates in major Hispanic markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, and the San Francisco Bay Area, anchored by its owned stations such as WNJU, KVEA, WSCV, and KTMD. The network is also carried broadly on cable, satellite, and virtual pay-TV providers nationwide. Beyond the United States, Telemundo Internacional syndicates the network's programming to more than 100 countries in over 35 languages, making its telenovelas and formats a global export. The company's Doral, Florida production campus, one of the largest television production facilities in the country, houses soundstages, newsrooms, and digital operations, and the network employs roughly 1,900 people worldwide.

Digital and Streaming Presence

Telemundo distributes its content across a wide digital ecosystem. The network's website, telemundo.com, offers full episodes, clips, news, and live streaming, while the Telemundo app extends viewing to mobile devices and connected televisions. Telemundo Digital Media produces original programming for web and social platforms, targeting younger bilingual audiences. Much of the network's scripted catalog is also available on Peacock, NBCUniversal's streaming service, where telenovelas and reality series reach cord-cutters. The network maintains one of the largest social media followings of any Spanish-language broadcaster, using platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook to promote premieres, stream live events, and engage fans of its novelas, music awards, and sports coverage.

Cultural Impact

Telemundo has played a significant role in shaping Hispanic culture in the United States. As the second-largest producer of Spanish-language content in the world, it has given generations of Latino viewers programming that reflects their language, stories, and experiences. Its telenovelas have launched the careers of major Latin American stars and created international fandoms. The network's news coverage of immigration and Latino community issues has provided representation often absent from English-language outlets, while its sports broadcasts, particularly the World Cup, have become communal viewing events for Hispanic families. By producing the majority of its content in the United States rather than simply importing it, Telemundo helped establish Miami as a capital of Spanish-language television production.

Awards and Recognition

Telemundo's programming has earned recognition across the television industry. Its telenovelas and news programs have won International Emmy Awards, and the network's productions regularly receive Premios Tu Mundo, the fan-voted awards show Telemundo itself created to honor its stars and programs. Noticias Telemundo has been honored for its journalism, including coverage of hurricanes, elections, and immigration. The network's sports division has earned acclaim for its World Cup broadcasts. These honors reflect Telemundo's evolution from a small station group into a world-class content producer competing at the highest levels of Spanish-language media.

How to Watch

Telemundo is available over the air through local stations and affiliates in major markets, on cable and satellite providers nationwide, and through live-TV streaming services such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and DirecTV Stream. Full episodes and live streams are available on telemundo.com and the Telemundo app, and much of its catalog streams on Peacock.
