About The Frontier Manipur

The Frontier Manipur is an English-language digital news portal based in Imphal, Manipur, founded and led by veteran journalist Dhiren A. Sadokpam. Described by its editor as a fearlessly independent online news venture launched in 2020, the portal covers politics, conflict, culture and public affairs in Manipur and the wider Northeast, and has become one of the most closely watched small newsrooms in the region — both for its ground-level reporting and for the legal pressures its journalists have faced from the state.

Founding and ownership

The Frontier Manipur was founded by Dhiren A. Sadokpam, who serves as its editor-in-chief. The portal is registered under India's Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises framework, with the registration dating to August 2020, placing the venture's formal launch in that year. It operates from Imphal, the capital of Manipur, a state with a long-running armed secessionist movement, complex inter-ethnic politics and one of India's most difficult environments for independent journalism. The outlet's self-description emphasizes editorial independence, presenting itself as a portal willing to report on subjects that larger or more cautious outlets avoid.

The founder's background

Dhiren A. Sadokpam brings a quarter-century of experience in print, electronic and online media to the venture. Before founding the portal, he edited two English dailies based in Imphal. Earlier in his career he served as associate senior producer for news at the TV Today Network, part of the India Today Group, from January 2003 to June 2007. He was the executive editor of Eastern Quarterly, a journal examining key issues in Northeast India, from 2007 to 2015, and worked as a media consultant with the Heinrich Böll Stiftung in New Delhi in 2009 before shifting base to Nagaland in 2011 as an independent researcher. He holds a post-graduate diploma in journalism from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (1996) and a master's degree in sociology from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi (1995), and has taught development communication as guest faculty at the AJ Kidwai Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia Millia Islamia. He also co-edited 'Northeast India: A Reader', published by Routledge India in 2018.

Editorial mission and approach

The portal's editorial approach is built around reporting from the ground in Manipur — human-interest stories, political analysis and coverage of the state's armed conflict and its social consequences. Its positioning is deliberately independent: in interviews, Sadokpam has argued that international media tends to view Kashmir and the Northeast through a breaking-news lens while domestic outlets take a state-centric, top-down approach, and that The Frontier Manipur exists to fill the gap with stories told from the perspective of the people living through these conflicts. The outlet publishes news, opinion and analysis in English, aiming at readers both within the Northeast and in the national and international audiences interested in the region.

Leadership and newsroom

Alongside Sadokpam as editor-in-chief, the portal's editorial leadership has included Paojel Chaoba (also known as Aribam Dhananjoy) as executive editor. The newsroom has been described as a small team of young professional journalists, several of whom left other jobs and returned to Manipur to help build the online venture. The outlet also runs a weekend talk show, 'Khanasi Neinasi' — the title translates roughly as "Let us discuss" — which deals with freedom of expression and has been streamed on the portal's Facebook and YouTube channels, extending its journalism into video formats and panel discussions.

The 2021 sedition and UAPA case

In January 2021, The Frontier Manipur became the center of a nationally noted press-freedom case. On 8 January the portal published an article titled "Revolutionary journey in a mess" by contributor M. Joy Luwang, which examined the trajectory of Manipur's armed revolutionary movement — active since the 1960s — and criticized what it described as mistakes by armed revolutionary leaders between 1990 and 2008, including their competition with one another instead of building a popular political movement. Manipur Police filed a suo motu first information report treating the piece as an endorsement of revolutionary ideology. On 17 January, Sadokpam and executive editor Paojel Chaoba were detained and booked under Indian Penal Code sections 124A (sedition), 120B (criminal conspiracy), 505(b) and 34, along with Section 39 (supporting a terrorist organisation) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The author was also named in the case. The two editors were released the following day after giving a written statement; the case remained open.

The detentions drew condemnation from press-freedom organizations. The International Press Institute demanded that the charges be dropped, and the Foundation of Media Professionals issued a statement describing the article as largely a critique of militant groups and criticizing the misuse of stringent legal provisions against journalists in Manipur. The episode became one of the emblematic cases cited in discussions of press freedom in the Northeast, illustrating the risks faced by small independent outlets reporting on insurgency and state power.

The IT Rules notice

In March 2021 the portal faced another state action. The district magistrate of Imphal West served a notice on the portal's executive editor and an associate editor under the central government's new Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 — reportedly the first such notice served on any digital news publisher in the country. The portal's editors called it a misuse of power and an attack on free speech, arguing that the rules were to be administered by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and that the powers had not been delegated to district authorities. The notice was withdrawn the same evening after the intervention of the information and broadcasting ministry, whose secretary wrote to the Manipur chief secretary clarifying the jurisdictional point. The incident drew national attention to the portal and to the implementation of the new digital media rules.

Coverage of the Manipur conflict

Since May 2023, when inter-ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities plunged Manipur into sustained violence, The Frontier Manipur has been part of the small ecosystem of local outlets reporting on the crisis. Sadokpam has given interviews to other media analyzing the roots of the conflict and the failures of governance that allowed it to escalate, positioning the portal's editor as a public commentator on the state's affairs. The outlet's ground-level orientation has made its coverage a reference point for understanding a conflict that national media has covered intermittently and often from a distance.

Digital presence and formats

The Frontier Manipur publishes at thefrontiermanipur.com and maintains an active presence on social media platforms including Facebook and YouTube, where its 'Khanasi Neinasi' talk show has aired multiple episodes on themes including media under siege and the implications of the new IT rules for digital journalism. The multi-format approach — text reporting supplemented by video discussions — reflects the strategies of small digital outlets seeking to reach audiences across platforms in a region with growing internet penetration.

Position in Northeast media

Within the media landscape of Manipur and the Northeast, The Frontier Manipur occupies a distinctive niche. The state's print media is dominated by established English and Manipuri-language dailies, and its digital news space includes both legacy extensions and newer portals. The Frontier Manipur distinguishes itself through its English-language, analysis-driven approach and its willingness to publish critical perspectives on both insurgent groups and the state — a stance that has brought it both recognition and legal jeopardy. Its experience has been cited by press-freedom advocates as evidence of the particular vulnerability of small independent newsrooms operating in conflict zones, where both state authorities and non-state actors may take exception to reporting.

Access

The Frontier Manipur is published at thefrontiermanipur.com. Its video content, including the 'Khanasi Neinasi' series, is available through its social media channels. The outlet continues to operate from Imphal under Sadokpam's editorship.
