About The Peak Hong Kong

The Peak Hong Kong

The Peak Hong Kong is the Hong Kong edition of The Peak, an English-language luxury lifestyle magazine first published in Hong Kong in 2004 by Singapore-based SPH Magazines, which also published editions in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. The South China Morning Post Group later secured the Hong Kong publishing licence from SPH, publishing it through PEAK HK Publishing Limited under SCMP Magazines. It used a closed circulation targeting highly affluent professionals and the social elite, predominantly senior businessmen, and covered luxury living, business, travel, food and premium products.

The Peak is one of Asia's most established luxury magazine brands, described by its owner SPH Media as an authoritative source on business and luxury living. The Hong Kong edition, launched in 2004, imported that brand into the city that would become one of the world's great luxury markets, and the transfer of its licence to the South China Morning Post Group tied it into Hong Kong's leading English-language media house.

A Singapore luxury brand

The Peak was established in Singapore by SPH Magazines, the magazine arm of Singapore Press Holdings, and had been established in the region for more than twenty years when the Hong Kong licence changed hands. Its Singapore edition was the reference point for the brand: a monthly luxury magazine ranked among the year's best in industry surveys, with a predominantly male readership in the 30–49 age band and a large share of readers earning more than US$200,000 a year.

SPH Media describes The Peak today as an authoritative source on business and luxury living, offering thought leadership, in-depth interviews and insightful coverage of passion pursuits such as horology, fashion, dining, and arts and culture. That positioning — business first, luxury second — distinguishes The Peak from pure fashion glossies: its reader is presented as a senior executive whose lifestyle interests follow from a position in business, and whose magazine should speak the language of boardrooms as fluently as that of boutiques.

The Hong Kong edition from 2004

SPH first published The Peak in Hong Kong in 2004. A June 2016 Hong Kong issue is attested in the candidate record, and the edition was produced within the wider Peak network, which also published editions in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. For Hong Kong, the title arrived at a moment of rapid wealth growth, when the city's luxury retail market was expanding with demand from both Hong Kong's own affluent residents and mainland Chinese visitors.

The Hong Kong edition's content followed the brand's formula: luxury living, business, travel, food and premium products, with interviews and features addressing the interests of senior businessmen. Hong Kong editions of the wider SPH portfolio have continued to cover the city in digital form, including features on Hong Kong hotels, art institutions such as M+, dining and the city's emergence as a gastronomy hub — the continuing editorial territory of the brand.

Closed circulation and the affluent reader

The Peak's Hong Kong edition used a closed circulation model. Rather than being sold freely on newsstands to anyone who picked it up, it targeted a defined list of highly affluent professionals and members of the social elite, predominantly senior-level businessmen who travelled frequently and, at the time of the licence transfer, were reported to earn an annual salary in excess of US$400,000. That controlled distribution is the essence of the closed-circulation luxury model: the magazine's value to advertisers lies in the precision of its readership, not its size.

The Singapore edition's audited figures illustrate the model's economics. In the 2013 industry rankings, The Peak's Singapore circulation was 17,753, audited, and it ranked second in the luxury magazine category. A small, wealthy, largely male and professional readership — such is the advertiser proposition of a title whose pages carry watches, jewellery, private banking and fine liquor advertising.

The SCMP licence

The South China Morning Post Group later secured the Hong Kong publishing licence for The Peak from SPH Magazines. The deal, finalised in 2013 and reported by the trade title Marketing-Interactive, brought a leading English-language luxury lifestyle publication to the SCMP Group, complementing its existing portfolio of products catering to luxury advertisers and consumers. The Hong Kong edition was to be published under a newly formed SCMP Group subsidiary, PEAK HK Publishing Limited, under the leadership of Josephine Chan, managing director of SCMP Magazines.

For SCMP, the acquisition fitted an aggressive luxury expansion of the period. The group acquired the Hong Kong licences for ELLE and Esquire and the title HK Magazine in the same years, and in 2014 it added the Macau luxury publisher Destination Macau Limited. The Peak was one piece in a deliberate assembly of a luxury advertising offer across print titles in Hong Kong and Macau.

Inside SCMP's magazine portfolio

Under SCMP Magazines, The Peak sat alongside the group's other glossy titles. Josephine Chan, who led the new Peak publishing company, also headed the group's titles ELLE, ELLE Men, Esquire, Cosmopolitan, CosmoGirl! and Harper's Bazaar. The Peak marked the third men's title under the group, alongside ELLE Men and Esquire, giving SCMP an unusually complete coverage of the Hong Kong luxury market by gender and interest.

That portfolio logic explains why a newspaper group would want a luxury magazine licence: the South China Morning Post's readership was already the city's most affluent, and the magazines gave its advertising arm a set of premium, targeted products through which to reach the same readers in their leisure and consumption. The Peak, with its closed circulation of senior businessmen, was the most precisely targeted of those products.

The Peak across the region

The Peak brand extends beyond Singapore and Hong Kong. SPH Magazines published editions in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, and SPH Media has continued to expand the brand's footprint, announcing a licensing agreement with Indian publisher Ashrayu Media to launch The Peak in India, aimed at the country's growing youth, luxury and business lifestyle segments. The India launch, with an editorial approach centred on leadership, entrepreneurship, luxury and wealth, follows the brand's established pattern of licensing to local partners in growing luxury markets.

The regional network matters because it gives the Hong Kong edition a brand larger than its own circulation. A Hong Kong reader of The Peak is reading a magazine whose name is recognised across Asia's luxury markets, whose interviews and features can be shared across editions, and whose advertising base spans regional luxury houses rather than a single city's retailers.

Continuing coverage of Hong Kong

The Peak brand's engagement with Hong Kong has continued in digital form. The Peak's Singapore platform maintains a dedicated Hong Kong stream of coverage, applying the brand's business-and-luxury formula to the city: reviews of Hong Kong hotels including the refurbished Island Shangri-La, The Upper House and Tai Koo's EAST Hong Kong; coverage of M+, Hong Kong's museum of contemporary visual culture, and its 2026 programme; features on Sotheby's Maison Hong Kong and the experience of art collecting; bar trends from Cantonese liquors to savoury cocktails; Cathay Pacific's revamped lounge at Hong Kong International Airport; and an account of why Sha Tau Kok, Hong Kong's last closed area, is worth a visit.

The stream also carries analytical coverage of the city's luxury economy, including how Hong Kong is regaining its footing as a gastronomy hub. This continuing editorial attention shows the Hong Kong market remaining one of the brand's core subjects even where its print arrangements have changed — a pattern consistent with the edition's history since 2004, in which The Peak's name has been attached to Hong Kong luxury life under two different publishing arrangements.

Place in Hong Kong luxury media

The Peak Hong Kong's place in the city's media history is that of a prestige import, naturalised into Hong Kong's leading media group. From its first publication in 2004 by SPH Magazines to its transfer to the South China Morning Post Group and publication through PEAK HK Publishing Limited, it followed the trajectory of Hong Kong's luxury market itself: growing in the 2000s, professionalising in the 2010s, and consolidating into larger media groups as print economics tightened.

Its model — closed circulation, affluent professional readership, business-and-luxury editorial mix — remains the template for the luxury magazine in Hong Kong. The Peak's Hong Kong edition is the city's expression of a regional brand that has spent two decades refining that model, and its history illustrates how a Singapore magazine became, for a time, a Hong Kong institution under the South China Morning Post.
