The Post-Standard

The Post-Standard is the major daily newspaper of greater Syracuse, New York — founded in 1829 as The Onondaga Standard, owned by Advance Publications, and published alongside its sister website syracuse.com under Advance Media New York.

About The Post-Standard

The paper was founded on September 10, 1829, as The Onondaga Standard, after Vivus W. Smith consolidated the Onondaga Journal with the Syracuse Advertiser under that name. Through the 1800s it was known variously as the Weekly Standard, the Daily Standard, and the Syracuse Standard. On December 26, 1898, the owners of the Daily Standard and The Syracuse Post merged the papers; the first issue of the newly merged paper was published on January 1, 1899, as The Post-Standard.

The modern paper's ownership took shape when publisher Samuel I. Newhouse entered the Syracuse market in 1939, buying the city's two evening papers — the Syracuse Herald and the Syracuse Journal — and merging them into the Syracuse Herald-Journal. In 1944 Newhouse bought The Post-Standard itself, establishing the Advance Publications presence in Central New York. Newhouse later became the benefactor of Syracuse University's acclaimed S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Today The Post-Standard is published seven days a week, with home delivery to subscribers on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, from its downtown Syracuse headquarters. It and syracuse.com are among the consumer brands of Advance Media New York, part of Advance Local Media. The paper has long ranked among the best-read newspapers in the country by market penetration. Its digital home is syracuse.com.
