The Vault was a British free-to-air music and entertainment television channel that broadcast for twenty years, from 2003 to 2023, before closing as Trace Vault. Launched by Chart Show Channels as a late-night offshoot of Chart Show TV, it grew into a 24-hour service dedicated to classic and nostalgic music videos, drawing on pop, dance, rock and R&B from the 1960s onwards. Owned for most of its life by CSC Media Group, it was rebranded as Trace Vault in November 2019 following Trace Group's takeover of Sony's music channels, and closed on 14 December 2023.
Origins as Video Vault
The channel's story began on 12 March 2003, when Chart Show Channels launched Video Vault as a late-night service broadcasting from 3 am to 6 am within Chart Show TV's downtime. It replaced Chart Shop TV, a short-lived shopping channel that had aired in those overnight hours since October 2002 and closed on 11 March 2003. The Vault, as it would soon be known, was the second music service launched by Chart Show Channels, and it filled overnight hours that would otherwise have carried teleshopping or repeats.
On 16 July 2003 the service was renamed The Vault and its hours were increased to 8 pm to 6 am, moving to the broadcast capacity previously used by Pop. Then, on 17 September 2003, it expanded to broadcast 24 hours a day, becoming a full-time channel in its own right. The channel played nostalgic music and classic pop from the 1960s onwards, occasionally featuring music videos and concert footage from as early as the 1950s, and quickly established itself as one of the main nostalgia outlets in the crowded British music television market.
Early years under CSC Media Group
The Vault was owned and operated by CSC Media Group, formerly known as Chart Show Channels, which ran a bouquet of music channels including Chart Show TV, Bliss, Scuzz, Flaunt and Flava. In its early years The Vault showed classic music videos from yesteryear alongside songs that were between one and five years old, and it also played music from the 1980s and 1990s. The channel played songs that had been big hits and organised its videos into programmes based on different themes, such as boybands, girl groups and music from cinema, as well as programmes drawn from different genres.
The channel also screened classic episodes of The Chart Show, the long-running programme produced by The Vault's parent company, reinforcing its credentials as a home for British pop television heritage. The Vault's logo appeared on screen in the top left-hand corner during music videos, with song information fading in and out at the bottom of the screen at the start and near the end of each video.
Programming and themed strands
Over the years The Vault built a large roster of themed programming blocks. Music strands included 80s Ballads, Best of the 1980s, Best of the 1990s, Motown Classics, Vault Classics, Infinite Classics, Number 1s at One, Greatest Number 2s, Hits from Flix — music from top films — Original vs Cover, Same but Different, Rise and Shine, Saturday Nite Party, Weekend Wake up and Thank Classic it's Friday!, alongside gentler strands such as Cuddle up with Vault and Vault's Pub Jukebox. These blocks gave the channel's schedule a predictable, magazine-like rhythm that encouraged casual, all-day viewing.
From around 2016 the channel gradually added entertainment programming from the 1990s to its schedule, including classic sitcoms and youth comedies such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Sweet Valley High, Malibu, CA, Saved by the Bell and its spin-offs Saved by the Bell: The College Years and Saved by the Bell: The New Class, Clarissa Explains it All, Kenan & Kel, Moesha, The Parkers, Sister, Sister, Clueless, The Simple Life, USA High and even Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. This move blurred the line between music nostalgia and television nostalgia, positioning The Vault as a broader retro-entertainment destination.
Rebrands and on-screen identity
The Vault refreshed its look several times across its twenty years. On 29 April 2010 it rebranded with a new logo and graphics presentation, alongside newly themed content and a more diverse mix of classic pop, classic dance, classic rock, classic R&B and chill-out music from across the previous 25 years. By 2011 the channel's focus had settled on old and new pop music. A further rebrand took place in 2014, and another followed in 2016 as the entertainment shows were added to the schedule.
The channel's original logo was used from 2003 to 2010, replaced by the 2010 identity, then by a further logo from 2014 to 2019, before the Trace Vault logo was adopted from 2019. Each refresh aimed to keep the channel's nostalgic proposition feeling contemporary without abandoning its core audience of viewers who tuned in for familiar hits.
Platform availability
The Vault was available 24 hours a day on Sky channel 366, later moving to channel 360, and formed part of CSC Media's bouquet of music channels on the platform. It also broadcast on Freesat channel 501 from the platform's launch until 21 October 2019, when it was replaced by Christmas Starz. The channel was launched on Freeview in November 2017, replacing Chart Show TV, but was removed from the terrestrial platform on 7 November 2018, with its slot replaced by its former sister channel True Movies +1.
These comings and goings reflected the commercial pressures on standard-definition music channels: platform fees, limited electronic programme guide prominence and declining audiences all made carriage harder to justify as the 2010s wore on.
The Trace takeover and rebrand
In 2019 the channel's ownership changed hands. Trace Group took over Sony's music channels in the United Kingdom, and on 1 November 2019 The Vault rebranded as Trace Vault. The first song played on the new Trace Vault was "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" by Soulja Boy Tell'em, while the final song under The Vault name had been "Cry Me a River" by Justin Timberlake — which, as happened on the network's sister channels during the changeover, was cut off part way through. Trace Group also rebranded the channel's siblings, with Chart Show TV becoming Trace Urban, later Trace Hits, and Chart Show Dance becoming Trace Latina.
The rebrand aligned the channel with Trace, the international urban music and entertainment brand, but the core proposition of classic music videos and entertainment remained. The channel continued to broadcast on Sky under its new name, with the Trace Vault logo used from 2019.
Closure in December 2023
After twenty years of operation, the channel closed on 14 December 2023. The final song to be played was "We're All in This Together" from High School Musical. In common with other channels in the Sony and Trace portfolio at the time, the broadcast froze on the video halfway through, briefly showing a technical fault slide. The channel's Sky electronic programme guide slot was bought by That's 80s, a nostalgia music channel from a different stable.
The closure came in the same period as the shutdown of Trace Hits, which had closed on 27 April 2023, and the Trace brand's withdrawal from British linear television. Trace Latina, the former Chart Show Dance, had already closed on 1 June 2020. Within a year, the remaining Box Plus Network music channels would also close, leaving British linear television with almost no dedicated music channels.
Legacy
The Vault's legacy is that of one of Britain's longest-running nostalgia music channels, outlasting most of its contemporaries from the boom years of British music television. For two decades it served viewers who wanted to watch the videos of their youth rather than the current charts, from the power ballads of the 1980s to the pop hits of the 1990s and 2000s. Its themed blocks, from 80s Ballads to Vault's Pub Jukebox, gave it a distinctive voice in a genre that was often criticised for bland, jukebox-style scheduling.
The channel's late move into 1990s entertainment programming anticipated the broader nostalgia boom of the streaming era, and its eventual closure marked the end of the CSC Media era of British music television. Alongside Scuzz, Chart Show TV and its other siblings, The Vault was part of a generation of channels that defined how Britain watched music in the 2000s — and its twenty-year run made it one of the last of that generation to switch off.
