About Tien Phong (Vanguard)

Tien Phong (Vanguard)

Overview

Tien Phong, whose name means "Vanguard", is a Vietnamese daily newspaper published from Hanoi. It is the mouthpiece of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the youth wing of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and it is one of Vietnam's long-established national newspapers. Its website is tienphong.vn. It is, with Tuoi Tre, one of the Youth Union's two newspapers: Tuoi Tre is published by the Union's Ho Chi Minh City branch, while Tien Phong is published by the Union's Central Committee in Hanoi. Its coverage spans politics, society, education, culture, sport and youth affairs, and its online edition is among Vietnam's most read news sites.

The paper's recent history is defined by a restructuring that changed its supervising authority without changing its identity. During the 2025 restructuring of Vietnam's mass organisations, Tien Phong became a public-service unit of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, while remaining the mouthpiece of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union. Earlier press-planning arrangements had contemplated consolidating the Youth Union's newspaper portfolio, including a possible combination of Thanh Nien and Tien Phong, but the restructuring ultimately retained both as separate publications under the Front. Tien Phong therefore continues today as a distinct title, with a new institutional home and the same youth-organisation voice.

History

Tien Phong was first published on 16 November 1953 at Ban Don, in what is now Minh Thanh commune in Son Duong, Tuyen Quang, during the First Indochina War. It was established during that war as one of the first revolutionary newspapers in Vietnam, at about the same time as the predecessors of Quan Doi Nhan Dan and Nhan Dan. Its early years were therefore wartime years, when the paper was produced in the Viet Bac revolutionary base and served the resistance movement. That origin gives the paper a lineage as long as any in Vietnamese journalism, and it celebrated its seventieth anniversary in 2023.

The paper's later history follows the arc of Vietnam's press. After reunification in 1975 it became a national daily, and in the doi moi period it expanded its coverage and its readership. A reference listing gives its founding year as 1957, which appears to reflect a later re-establishment or a different dating convention, but the more specific account, published by the State Media Monitor in August 2026, dates its first publication to 16 November 1953, and that date is used here. The paper's history also includes specialist publications for students and young readers, which have been part of its portfolio for many years.

The most recent chapter in the paper's history is the 2025 and 2026 reorganisation. According to its editor-in-chief, Phung Cong Suong, speaking in June 2026, the reorganisation reduced the paper's organisational focal points from thirty-two to ten, alongside a substantial reduction in staffing, and a dedicated Business Communications and Events Centre operates within the new structure. The reorganisation was part of a wider streamlining of Vietnam's state-affiliated media, and it changed how the paper is organised without ending its publication.

Programming and Content

Tien Phong's content covers the full range of a national daily, with a youth accent. Its daily edition and its electronic edition at tienphong.vn carry politics, society, education, culture, sport and international news, together with reporting on youth movements and the activities of the Youth Union. Its specialist publications include Sinh vien Viet Nam, for students, and Hoa Hoc Tro, a long-running publication for school and university readers, together with digital brands that extend its reach to younger audiences online. That combination, a national daily plus youth specialist titles, reflects the paper's dual identity as both a general newspaper and a youth-organisation paper.

The paper's online edition is a significant part of its output. In 2025 the paper described its electronic edition, citing Similarweb data, as one of Vietnam's ten most read electronic newspapers, and its website is a major channel for its reporting. The paper's content online includes breaking news, features, video and the digital brands associated with its youth titles, and it reaches readers who do not read the print edition. The paper's reporting style is that of a mainstream national daily, with an emphasis on education, youth and social issues that reflects its ownership.

Audience and Reach

Tien Phong's audience is national, with a particular strength among young readers, students and the youth-organisation network. Its online edition's standing among Vietnam's ten most read electronic newspapers, as the paper itself reported in 2025 citing Similarweb, indicates a large digital readership, although no specific traffic figure is asserted here. Its print edition reaches readers across the country, and its specialist publications give it a presence in schools and universities that general newspapers do not have.

The paper's audience is also institutional. As the mouthpiece of the Youth Union, it is read within the Union's network of members and officials, and its reporting on youth movements and Union activities is directed at that audience. At the same time, its general news coverage reaches a much wider public, and its position as a long-established national daily means that its reporting is followed by other Vietnamese media and by observers of Vietnam. That dual audience, institutional and general, is characteristic of Vietnam's larger state-affiliated papers.

Digital Presence

Tien Phong's digital presence is centred on tienphong.vn, which carries its daily reporting, its youth specialist content and its digital brands. The site is one of Vietnam's most read news sites, according to the paper's own 2025 account citing Similarweb, and it is the paper's main channel for readers. The paper's digital operation includes video, photographic and interactive content, and it extends the paper's youth titles into online formats that reach students and young readers on their phones.

The paper's digital history is part of its wider history. Like other Vietnamese papers, it moved from print-only publication to a combined print and online operation, and its online edition has grown to become a major part of its output. The 2025 and 2026 reorganisation, which reduced its organisational structure, did not end its digital operation, and its website continues to publish daily. The paper's digital brands, associated with its student and youth titles, are a further part of its online presence.

Ownership and Organisation

Tien Phong is the mouthpiece of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, and since the 2025 restructuring it has been a public-service unit of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee. The Youth Union itself was founded on 26 March 1931 and took its present name in December 1976, and it is the Party's youth organisation, described by the Party as a training ground for future cadres. The Union's two newspapers are Tien Phong, published by its Central Committee, and Tuoi Tre, published by its Ho Chi Minh City branch. The Fatherland Front is the umbrella organisation for Vietnam's mass organisations, and Tien Phong's move under the Front's Central Committee reflects the restructuring of those organisations in 2025.

The paper's organisation, after the 2025 and 2026 reorganisation, is leaner than before. Its editor-in-chief, Phung Cong Suong, reported in June 2026 that the paper's organisational focal points had been reduced from thirty-two to ten, with a substantial reduction in staffing, and that a Business Communications and Events Centre operates within the structure. The paper's headquarters are in Hanoi, where the Youth Union's Central Committee is also based, and its staff includes journalists, editors and digital producers for its daily, its specialist publications and its website.

Contact and Availability

Tien Phong is available in print as a daily newspaper in Vietnam and online at tienphong.vn. Its headquarters are in Hanoi. The paper publishes no single public contact email on the pages examined for this profile, and this directory's public business-email field is therefore left empty; readers are best directed to the paper's website. For readers following Vietnamese youth affairs and national news, its daily reporting remains one of the country's long-established sources.
