Tribun Padang, also styled TribunPadang.com, is the West Sumatra member of the Tribun Network, the regional newspaper and news network of Kompas Gramedia, operating under KG Media. Based in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, Indonesia, it has served the province since 2019 through its portals at padang.tribunnews.com and tribunpadang.com, published by PT Padang Media Grafika. It carries the Tribun Network's hyperlocal mission — summed up in the network slogan "Mata Lokal Menjangkau Indonesia," local eyes reaching Indonesia — to the Minangkabau homeland, covering news, economics, sport, travel and lifestyle for Padang and the wider province, and distributing its journalism across the website and social platforms including Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and TikTok.
Tribun Padang began operating in Padang in 2019. Research on the outlet by Universitas Andalas, the province's leading university, dates its presence precisely: in 2019, Tribunnews online media arrived in the city of Padang under the name Tribun Padang, at the address padang.tribunnews.com. Reference works record the same founding year, 2019, list its owner as KG Media, and give its publisher as PT Padang Media Grafika. Its second address, tribunpadang.com, redirects automatically to padang.tribunnews.com, the subdomain pattern used across the Tribun Network, in which each regional outlet sits within the national Tribunnews.com portal while keeping its own local identity and domain name.
The outlet's office is in Padang itself, at Kompleks Polamas Residence, Jalan Ketilang number A7, in the Andalas area of Padang Timur district, East Padang — the address published in its own editorial listing. From there it reports a province whose society is the homeland of the Minangkabau people, and whose capital is a coastal trading and university city facing the Indian Ocean.
Tribun Padang cannot be understood apart from the network that created it. The Tribun Network is Kompas Gramedia's chain of regional newspapers and news portals, managed under KG Media, the media subsidiary into which Kompas Gramedia reorganised its media units in 2018. The network's origins go back to 1987, when Kompas Gramedia acquired the Sriwijaya Post in Palembang and established PT Indopersda Primamedia, known as Persda, to assist regional newspapers; Serambi Indonesia in Aceh and Surya in Surabaya followed in 1988, Pos Kupang in 1992 and Banjarmasin Post in 1994. Persda later began publishing its own regional papers under the Tribun brand, beginning with Tribun Kaltim in Balikpapan in 2003, followed by titles such as Tribun Timur in Makassar and Tribun Jabar in Bandung. In 2010 Persda rebranded as Tribun Network and launched the unified portal Tribunnews.com, which was formally launched on 22 March 2010 and is managed by PT Tribun Digital Online.
Today the network owns more than twenty local newspapers and a national sports newspaper across cities and regencies throughout Indonesia, and Tribunnews.com states that it is supported by more than 1,500 journalists carrying local values from 38 provinces, together with a reader community known as Tribunners. Tribun Padang is the network's West Sumatra outpost in that system: listed in the Tribun Network's roster of regional titles for Sumatra alongside Serambi Indonesia, Tribun Medan, Tribun Pekanbaru, Tribun Batam, Tribun Jambi, Sriwijaya Post, Tribun Sumsel, Bangka Pos, Pos Belitung, Tribun Lampung, Tribun Bengkulu and others, and catalogued in the Indonesian list of regional newspapers. Its journalists work within the network's shared systems while filing the local news of one province.
The doctrine that Tribun Padang inherited is hyperlocal journalism. Tribunnews.com is strengthened, in its own formulation, by the slogan "Mata Lokal Menjangkau Indonesia" — the local eye reaching out to Indonesia — founded on hyperlocal principles: raising local news through a regional perspective. The idea is that every reader is a local person, and that the values and viewpoints of each region deserve to be carried to the whole country. A Tribun outlet is therefore not a branch office relaying national news downwards, but a local newsroom whose first duty is its own territory, plugged into a national network that can amplify what it finds.
For West Sumatra, that doctrine has a particular resonance. The province has a strong regional identity, a large diaspora across Indonesia — the Minangkabau tradition of merantau, migration in search of work and education, means West Sumatrans live in every major Indonesian city — and a constant flow of news of interest both at home and to that diaspora. A hyperlocal outlet in Padang serves both audiences at once: residents who need city and provincial news, and migrants for whom the portal is a window on home.
Tribun Padang's published rubric list shows the standard breadth of a Tribun network outlet applied to West Sumatra. Its sections include news, economics, superskor and sport, travel, celebrity news, lifestyle, automotive, technology and health. In practice, its news pages carry the daily agenda of Padang and the province: city and provincial government, courts and crime, disasters and public services in a province exposed to earthquakes and floods, education, and the social and religious life of the community. The economics pages address trade, markets and small business; the sport pages carry the network's Superskor football coverage alongside local sport; and the travel pages serve a province that markets its coasts, highlands and cuisine to domestic visitors. The same material is repackaged for the outlet's social platforms, each with its own format.
Although active from 2019, Tribun Padang staged a formal relaunch three years later. On 10 August 2022, TribunPadang.com held its relaunch at the Hotel Santika Premiere Padang, built around a talk show on the theme "Peran Pemerintah Kota dalam Membangun UKM Berorientasi Ekspor" — the role of city governments in building export-oriented small and medium enterprises. The event invited mayors from across West Sumatra as speakers, and national coverage of the Tribun Network talk show in Padang recorded ministers Teten Masduki and Zulkifli Hasan offering advice on developing small businesses, with the network presenting the outlet under the theme of bringing stories from the Minangkabau homeland through Tribun Padang.
The choice of theme was a statement about the outlet's ambitions. A relaunch built around export-oriented small business positioned Tribun Padang not merely as a reporter of West Sumatra's affairs but as a participant in its economic development — a convenor able to bring city governments, national ministers and local entrepreneurs into one room. That convening role, using the network's national weight on behalf of a provincial agenda, is characteristic of how Tribun outlets mark their presence in their regions.
Tribun Padang has itself become an object of academic study, and the research preserves a detailed picture of how its newsroom works. A Universitas Andalas master's thesis examined the application of the Tribunnews media convergence model in Padang through the experience of five of the outlet's journalists. It found that Tribun Padang's journalists understood convergence through the tasks and targets their editors set them: a single journalist is expected to produce the written news story and also to take photographs and video and to conduct live broadcasts on Facebook or YouTube. The resulting content does not appear only on the website; it is distributed across the outlet's social platforms — Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok — and the journalists understood that content had to be adjusted to each platform, because every medium has its own format and codes of communication.
The study also preserves the voice of the outlet's management. Emil Mahmudsyah, the person in charge of Tribun Padang and a senior journalist, explained to the researcher how online media had developed since the 1990s, from the founding of detik.com onwards, and how rising conventional production costs and the spread of communication technology pushed audiences toward digital news. He argued that media with a network behind them adapt faster to technological change, pointing to the convergence undertaken across Kompas Gramedia — Kompas.id, Kompas.com, Kompas TV and their social platforms — and to Tribunnews as part of that group. The thesis notes, too, that many of Tribun Padang's journalists were fresh graduates, making the outlet a first newsroom for a new generation of West Sumatran journalists learning a converged trade.
Tribun Padang entered a province with a proud and crowded press tradition of its own. Padang's established dailies include titles such as Padang Ekspres, Haluan and Singgalang, and the province has a dense ecology of local online media. A digital-first Tribun outlet, backed by the largest regional network in the country and by Tribunnews.com's national traffic, represented a different kind of competitor: one whose costs were those of an online newsroom rather than a printing plant, whose distribution was by search and social media rather than by agents and newsstands, and whose local reporting could be surfaced nationally through the network. Its traffic standing reflects that model: listings of Padang media have placed padang.tribunnews.com at the head of local outlets by a wide margin, consistent with the Tribun Network's position among Indonesia's largest online news operations.
In the few years since 2019, Tribun Padang has established itself as West Sumatra's window into the Tribun Network and the network's window into West Sumatra. It brought the Kompas Gramedia regional system — its hyperlocal doctrine, its converged newsroom methods, its national portal and its network of more than 1,500 journalists — to a province that the network's print-era expansion had not reached with a Tribun title. Its 2022 relaunch around export-oriented small business announced a development role beyond daily news; the academic study of its journalists documents, from inside, how a modern Indonesian regional outlet actually works. For readers in Padang, across West Sumatra and in the Minangkabau diaspora beyond, Tribun Padang is the local face of Indonesia's largest regional news network.
