About Triple M Central Queensland

Triple M Central Queensland

Triple M Central Queensland — callsign 4RGK — is a commercial radio station broadcasting from Rockhampton to Central Queensland, Australia on 101.5 MHz FM from Rockhampton, with repeaters on 95.1 FM in Gladstone and 101.1 FM in Mount Murchison. Part of Southern Cross Austereo's Triple M network, it plays an adult contemporary and greatest-hits format — "Rockhampton's home of Greatest Hits." It first broadcast on 30 September 2000 as Sea FM, established by RG Capital, and was rebranded as Triple M on 15 December 2016. Its published contacts are +61 133 353 and centralqld@triplem.com.au, with PO Box 159, Rockhampton. It streams via SCA's LiSTNR platform; no website URL is asserted in this profile's frontmatter.

Overview

Triple M Central Queensland is the rock-and-greatest-hits station for the Beef Capital and the industrial coast: Rockhampton, the city built on cattle and the military, and Gladstone, the alumina-and-LNG port to the south-east. The callsign 4RGK encodes its history: 4 for Queensland, RG for RG Capital, K for the licence area. Where sister station Hit Central Queensland (4ROK, 107.9 FM) plays today's hits for the young, Triple M plays the greatest hits for the grown-ups — the SCA regional duopoly, one building, the whole commercial audience.

History

The 2000 launch put Central Queensland on the Sea FM map alongside the network's other Queensland stations: the Gold Coast original, Townsville, Cairns, Mackay. RG Capital's strategy was the regional FM rollout — new licences, new stations, the Sea FM brand as the adult-contemporary alternative to the Hot FM youth network. In Central Queensland, 101.5 Sea FM slotted between the heritage 4RO on AM and the ABC: the FM station for the grown-ups, from day one.

The station first broadcast on 30 September 2000 as Sea FM Central Queensland — callsign 4RGK — established by RG Capital as part of the Sea FM network's Queensland rollout. The late 1990s and early 2000s were the high tide of regional FM expansion: new licences in Rockhampton, Gladstone, Cairns, Townsville and Mackay, the Sea FM brand spreading up the coast from its Gold Coast birthplace. In 2004, RG Capital's stations were sold to Macquarie Regional RadioWorks, and the station passed through Southern Cross Media into Southern Cross Austereo after the 2011 merger with Austereo.

On 15 December 2016, as part of the biggest rebrand in Australian radio history — 66 stations across SCA's national portfolio — 101.5/95.1 Sea FM became Triple M Central Queensland. The Sea FM name had served Central Queensland for sixteen years; the Triple M brand gave it the national identity SCA wanted, with the local content retained. The station's repeaters — 95.1 FM in Gladstone and 101.1 FM in Mount Murchison — carried the rebrand with it.

Rockhampton and Gladstone are two cities, one licence area: the Beef Capital inland on the Fitzroy, the industrial port on the coast. The 95.1 Gladstone repeater gives the port city its own Triple M — the alumina workers, the LNG workforce, the harbour — while 101.5 serves Rocky: the cattle, the university, the military. The 101.1 Mount Murchison repeater fills the ranges between. Three frequencies, one station: the Triple M network's Central Queensland footprint.
The Triple M network's national talent — the drive shows, the nights, the comedy — gives the station the network sound its audience expects: rock, sport and comedy, the Triple M trinity. The local content — the breakfast show, the community presence — keeps it Central Queensland's own. 'Fiercely local and proudly national,' as the network's head of content put it: the formula behind the 2016 rebrand.

Programming

Triple M Central Queensland plays the adult contemporary and greatest-hits format: "Rockhampton's home of Greatest Hits" — the rock and pop heritage for the 40-plus audience, with locally produced content and nationally syndicated Triple M programming around it. The format is the deliberate counterpoint to Hit Central Queensland's CHR: where Hit chases the teenagers, Triple M serves the workers — the cattlemen, the port workers, the military families, the audience that grew up with Sea FM and stayed for the greatest hits.

Central Queensland's economy shapes the audience: the cattle industry around Rockhampton — the Beef Capital, the saleyards, the processing works — and the heavy industry around Gladstone — the alumina refineries, the LNG plants, the coal port. The Triple M listener is the worker: the cattleman, the refinery operator, the truck driver on the Bruce Highway. The greatest-hits format is the soundtrack of the shift — and the drive home.

Coverage & Audience

Triple M Central Queensland broadcasts on 101.5 MHz FM to Rockhampton, with repeaters on 95.1 FM in Gladstone and 101.1 FM in Mount Murchison — taking the signal from the Beef Capital to the industrial port and the ranges. Its audience is Central Queensland's 40-plus: the workers and the families of the cattle country and the industrial coast, the listeners who want the greatest hits and the local voices with them.

The station's history runs through the names that built regional radio in Queensland: RG Capital — Reg Grundy's group, whose initials survive in the 4RGK callsign — then Macquarie Regional RadioWorks in 2004, then Southern Cross Media, then Southern Cross Austereo after the 2011 Austereo merger. Each owner left its mark; the callsign kept the founder's. The 2016 Triple M rebrand was the latest chapter: 66 stations, one national brand, the biggest rebrand in Australian radio history.
The +61 133 353 number is the Triple M network's national contact — the same prefix across the regional stations, routing to the local team. The centralqld@triplem.com.au email is the station's direct line: the breakfast show, the promotions, the local sales. The PO Box 159, Rockhampton address is the station's postal identity — the Beef Capital's Triple M, on the national network's terms.

Ownership

Triple M Central Queensland is owned and operated by Southern Cross Austereo as part of the Triple M network. Its sister station is Hit Central Queensland (4ROK, 107.9 FM) — the former Hot FM — with both stations based in Rockhampton. The duopoly is SCA's standard regional model: Hit for the young, Triple M for the grown-ups. Published contacts: +61 133 353 and centralqld@triplem.com.au; PO Box 159, Rockhampton.

The Sea FM years — 2000 to 2016 — were the station's coming of age: the RG Capital launch, the Macquarie era, the alignment with the Today Network's metropolitan stations after 2011. Sea FM Central Queensland was the 40-plus station even then: the adult contemporary format, the local breakfast, the networked shows. The Triple M rebrand kept the audience and changed the badge — 'Rockhampton's home of Greatest Hits,' then and now.
Gladstone's 95.1 repeater deserves a final word: the port city is a market in its own right — the refineries, the harbour, the industry — and the repeater gives it a full Triple M service, not a fringe signal. The Mount Murchison 101.1 fills the gap between the two cities: the ranges, the highways, the travellers. The network's footprint is the licence area's footprint — Central Queensland, covered.

Digital Presence

The station streams via SCA's LiSTNR platform, with the Triple M network's national digital presence behind it — the single app for the national Triple M brand. From Sea FM's 30 September 2000 launch to the 15 December 2016 Triple M rebrand, 101.5 has been Central Queensland's rock-and-greatest-hits station for a quarter of a century — Rockhampton's home of greatest hits, on 101.5 in Rocky, 95.1 in Gladstone and 101.1 at Mount Murchison.
