About Triple M Central West

Triple M Central West

Triple M Central West is a commercial FM radio station serving Orange and the Central Tablelands of New South Wales. Broadcasting on 105.1 MHz under the call sign 2OAG, it is owned and operated by Southern Cross Austereo and carries the Triple M network's adult contemporary and classic hits format. The station is one of Australia's oldest regional broadcasters, tracing its lineage to 2GZ, which opened on 31 October 1935.

Overview

The station is licensed to Orange, New South Wales, and transmits on 105.1 MHz on the FM band. As part of the Triple M network under Southern Cross Austereo, it broadcasts an adult contemporary and classic hits format with a wide playlist spanning the 1960s through the 1990s and into today, targeting a 35–55-year-old demographic. The station combines networked Triple M programming with local content including its own breakfast show.

History

Triple M Central West's history begins as 2GZ, one of regional Australia's pioneering commercial stations. It was opened by the Postmaster-General, Senator McLachlan, on the evening of 31 October 1935. The ceremony was actually performed in Sale, Victoria — the Senator was there opening the ABC regional station 3GI — and his speech was relayed by landline to Orange. The original licensee was Country Broadcasting Services (later Country Television Services), which went on to launch CBN-8 Orange and CWN-6 Dubbo television in the 1960s.

Contrary to popular belief, 2GZ was not the first station to open west of the Blue Mountains; that honour belongs to 2MK at Bathurst, which operated from 1925 to 1930/31. 2GZ originally broadcast on 990 kHz before switching to 1089 kHz. Its transmitter was situated at Amaroo, twelve miles from Orange.

The young station grew rapidly. In November 1936 it relocated its main studios and offices to Spring Street, Sydney — with the country studios and sales department remaining in Orange — and in March 1937 it began broadcasting from Hosking House in Hosking Place, Sydney, in a purpose-built "floating" studio (a building within a building) comprising three studios, two producers' booths, an audition room and a control room.

While entertainment dominated 2GZ's programming, the farming community was well served: the station presented a comprehensive regular schedule of market and weather reports alongside informative sessions, with leading agricultural authorities appearing to keep listeners abreast of scientific farming developments. It ran a "Progressive Farmer" competition, supported by the Rural Bank and the Agricultural Bureau of NSW, whose winner was sent on an extended tour of the United States to compare Australian and American farming methods.

The station's community institutions included the 2GZ Country Service Club and the Junior Country Service Club, which served country listeners across Central NSW for generations. The resident station manager in Orange was Alan Ridley, who had represented Australia in the rugby league test series against England. Well-known 2GZ personalities of the 1940s included Merv Beeh, Dick Turner, Joy Mary Hunt, Eric Child, Ted Husband, Gordon Ratcliffe, Pam Manning, Frank Semple and Arthur St George; in that era the station broadcast from the Union Bank building in Orange, with the original transmitter at Amaroo.

The station converted to the FM band on 8 October 1999, taking the call sign 2OAG on 105.1 MHz. The former 1089 AM frequency became a relay of an automated Sydney station and was later purchased by the Broadcast Operations Group (becoming 2EL). The FM station was the Central West outlet for the John Laws morning show — ironically, Laws had once worked at 2GZ himself before becoming a national radio icon — and ran its own breakfast programme. It later carried the Charles Wooley morning show (sending Laws to 2EL), and after Macquarie severed ties with Wooley in December, it was one of a handful of regional stations to take a feed of Ray Hadley's 2GB show, commencing 27 January.

In late 2016, Southern Cross Austereo took over the station and rebranded it Triple M Central West, aligning it with the national Triple M network alongside SCA's other regional conversions.

Programming and Content

Triple M Central West broadcasts an adult contemporary and classic hits format — a wide playlist from the 1960s through the 1990s and today — aimed at the 35–55 demographic. The station's local flagship is its breakfast show, hosted by Neil Gill, who celebrated 18 years with SCA and recorded a 31.8% breakfast share in the latest Orange Xtra Insights survey — a dominant result in a competitive market. SCA describes Gill as trusted, respected and deeply embedded in the Central West community, "and that shines through in the content he creates every day." Long-running local breakfast hosts are the backbone of regional commercial radio, and Gill's tenure reflects the station's community connection.

The station carries networked Triple M programming around its local content, and SCA's brand experience team runs local activations including the Activation Roadshow and community initiatives such as High Tea for Endo Australia — the on-the-ground brand presence that complements the on-air localism. The Triple M network's regional stations share network shows and the rock-leaning adult contemporary format while maintaining local breakfast and community presence in each market.

Coverage and Audience

Triple M Central West broadcasts on 105.1 FM to Orange and the Central Tablelands. The station is the market leader: in the latest Orange Xtra Insights survey it claimed the number one station position for both 10+ and 25–54 audiences, with SCA reporting a 77% reach of listeners aged 25–54 across its Orange stations — securing both the #1 and #2 stations in the market. The station streams via SCA's LiSTNR platform, extending its reach to online and app listeners.

Ownership

Triple M Central West is owned and operated by Southern Cross Austereo, one of Australia's largest commercial radio operators, as part of the Triple M network. SCA acquired the station in late 2016, converting it from its previous identity to the Triple M brand — one of a wave of regional rebrands that extended the Triple M network across country Australia. The station sits alongside SCA's Hit 105.9 Central West in the Orange market, giving SCA the market's #1 and #2 stations. (Super Radio Network was reported up for sale in September 2026 following the death of Bill Caralis in July 2024; SCA's ownership of Triple M Central West is unaffected.)

Digital Presence

The station streams live through Southern Cross Austereo's LiSTNR app and website, alongside the broader Triple M network's digital offering. LiSTNR is SCA's digital audio platform, carrying live streams of all SCA stations plus podcasts and digital-only music stations — giving Triple M Central West an on-demand and streaming presence beyond the 105.1 FM signal. It maintains an active social media presence promoting local events, competitions and community initiatives, and appears in online radio directories.

As Triple M Central West, the former 2GZ carries nine decades of Central West broadcasting history into the SCA era: from the Amaroo transmitter and the Country Service Club to the #1 FM station in Orange on 105.1 — the market leader with the community connection that regional radio is built on.
