About TSN

TSN

TSN — The Sports Network — is Canada's pioneering English-language sports specialty channel, owned by CTV Specialty Television Inc., a joint venture of Bell Media (80%) and ESPN (20%). Headquartered at the Bell Media Agincourt complex in Scarborough, Toronto, TSN operates five regional feeds and the TSN Direct streaming service, broadcasting live sports, sports news, and original programming to audiences across the country.

Overview

TSN is the elder statesman of Canadian sports television: launched in 1984 as part of the first group of Canadian specialty channels, it created the template for 24-hour sports coverage in the country. The service's programming spans live event telecasts — including NHL hockey, CFL football, NBA basketball, Major League Soccer, curling, golf, tennis, auto racing, and international hockey tournaments — alongside the flagship SportsCentre news program, talk shows, documentaries, and studio analysis. The five-feed structure (TSN1 through TSN5), introduced in August 2014, allows regional NHL games and alternative programming to air simultaneously across the country.

TSN's brand is synonymous with sports broadcasting in English Canada. Its personalities are among the country's best-known sports media figures, its theme music and production style are deeply familiar to generations of viewers, and its digital platforms — TSN.ca and the TSN app — are leading destinations for sports news, scores, and video.

History

TSN was established in 1984 by the Labatt Brewing Company — then owner of the Toronto Blue Jays — as part of the first licensed group of Canadian specialty channels, and it signed on September 1, 1984. In 1995, following Labatt's sale, a consortium of Canadian investors alongside ESPN took over the parent company, which was rebranded NetStar Communications; CTV Inc. acquired NetStar in 2000, and after CTV's acquisition of TSN, rival Sportsnet was sold to Rogers. The company became CTV Specialty Television, and through Bell Globemedia and CTVglobemedia it arrived at its current identity as part of Bell Media in 2011.

The channel's history is marked by landmark rights deals: long-standing partnerships with the NHL, CFL, NBA, and Curling Canada; coverage of multiple Olympic Games; and, in 2014, the split of the single national feed into five regional feeds to accommodate regional NHL broadcasts. In 2013, TSN was the largest specialty channel in Canada by gross revenue. Stewart Johnston has served as president of TSN since 2010. The network has also expanded into 4K ultra-high-definition broadcasts for selected events.

Programming

Live sports are the core: TSN's rights portfolio includes regional NHL games, the CFL (including the Grey Cup), the NBA and Toronto Raptors, MLS and the Canadian Premier League, IIHF international hockey tournaments including the World Juniors, curling's Season of Champions, golf's majors, tennis, NASCAR and Formula 1, NCAA basketball and football, and ESPN's signature programming. The five feeds allow the network to air multiple live events simultaneously, with regional NHL games blacked out appropriately by territory.

Studio programming is anchored by SportsCentre, the nightly sports news program, alongside That's Hockey, CFL on TSN panels, NBA on TSN studio shows, and long-form documentaries. TSN's production facilities at Agincourt house multiple studios and have hosted some of the most-watched broadcasts in Canadian television history, including Olympic and World Junior hockey coverage.

Coverage & Audience

TSN's five feeds are distributed nationally on cable, IPTV, and satellite, with regional feeds mapped to NHL broadcast territories. TSN Direct, the network's streaming service, offers live and on-demand access to subscribers without a cable package. The channel's audience is the broadest in Canadian sports television: its major event broadcasts — particularly World Junior hockey, Grey Cups, and playoff games — routinely rank among the year's most-watched programs.

The network's cultural footprint extends beyond ratings: TSN's catchphrases, theme music, and personalities are embedded in Canadian sports culture, and its digital platforms reach millions of monthly users for news, scores, fantasy sports, and video highlights.

Ownership

TSN is owned by The Sports Network Inc., a subsidiary of CTV Specialty Television Inc., which is a joint venture of Bell Media (80%) and ESPN LLC (20%). Bell Media, the media division of BCE Inc., operates the channel day-to-day from its Agincourt broadcast centre in Toronto. ESPN's minority stake reflects the channel's origins in the Labatt/ESPN partnership of the 1990s and provides TSN with access to ESPN programming and resources.

Signature Programming and Properties

TSN's programming is defined by its marquee sports properties. The network's NHL coverage — national and regional broadcasts of Canadian teams — is the cornerstone of its schedule, and its hockey programming extends from live games to the influential "That's Hockey" analysis and the network's draft and trade-deadline specials. TSN's CFL coverage — including the Grey Cup — serves football fans with comprehensive regular-season and playoff broadcasts, while its NBA coverage, anchored by the Toronto Raptors, brings basketball to Canadian audiences.

Beyond the major leagues, TSN's schedule features curling — a sport the network covers with unmatched depth, including the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and the Tim Hortons Brier — alongside international soccer, tennis majors, golf championships, auto racing, and the network's pioneering coverage of events like the FIFA World Cup. The breadth of the schedule reflects TSN's strategy: owning the sports conversation across every major property.

"SPORTSCENTRE" — the network's flagship news program, airing nightly — is the definitive Canadian sports newscast, and its anchors are among the country's best-known sports media figures. The program's highlights, analysis, and interviews set the agenda for the nation's sports conversation.

Industry Context and the Rogers Rivalry

TSN's position in Canadian sports media is defined by its rivalry with Rogers Sportsnet — a competition that spans television rights, talent, and audience. The two networks' battle for NHL rights, which saw Rogers secure the national package in 2013, reshaped the industry, but TSN retained regional rights and deepened its coverage of other properties. The rivalry extends to on-air talent, with prominent broadcasters moving between the networks, and to digital platforms, where TSN.ca and Sportsnet.ca compete for the nation's sports audience.

TSN's five-feed structure — a legacy of the network's regional origins — allows it to program different events simultaneously, a flexibility that single-feed competitors lack. The network's integration with Bell Media's broader operations — CTV, RDS, and the company's digital platforms — creates cross-promotional power that reinforces its market position.

Talent and Broadcasting Culture

TSN's on-air talent roster is among the most recognizable in Canadian media. The network's anchors, analysts, and reporters — many of them former professional athletes — bring insider credibility to its coverage, and its hockey analysts in particular are influential voices in the sport's national conversation. The network's studio programs feature debates and discussions that shape how Canadians understand the games they watch.

The network's broadcasting culture emphasizes both journalistic credibility and entertainment value: its news programming adheres to professional standards while its studio shows embrace the passionate, opinionated discourse that sports fans expect. This balance — information and argument, highlights and hot takes — defines TSN's on-air identity.

TSN's production infrastructure — studios in Toronto's Scarborough district, remote broadcast facilities, and digital production capabilities — supports the most technically sophisticated sports broadcasting in Canada. The network's innovation in broadcast technology, from augmented-reality graphics to advanced analytics presentation, has influenced sports television beyond Canada's borders.

Digital Presence

TSN's official website at tsn.ca is one of Canada's leading sports digital properties, offering news, scores, statistics, video highlights, fantasy sports, and live streaming through TSN Direct. The TSN app extends the service to mobile devices with personalized alerts and video, and the network maintains massive social media followings across platforms, where clips, breaking news, and debate content circulate widely. TSN's digital video — from SportsCentre highlights to original documentaries — is a major driver of sports conversation in Canada.
