About TV5Monde
Overview
TV5Monde is the global French-language television network, broadcasting several channels of French programming to more than 200 countries and territories. Launched on 2 January 1984 as TV5 by a consortium of five public broadcasters from France, Switzerland and Belgium, it is one of the world's great international television networks, alongside the likes of CNN and MTV in global availability. Its headquarters are in Paris, and its website is tv5monde.com.
The network broadcasts non-stop, advertising-free French-language television, financed by France, Switzerland, Canada, Québec and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. In the United Kingdom it is available on Virgin Media on channel 825, by satellite free-to-air on Astra 19.2 degrees East and Eutelsat Hot Bird, and online via its TV5Mondeplus streaming platform.
Founding in 1984
TV5 was formed on 2 January 1984 under the guidance of Claude Cheysson, the French Minister for Foreign Affairs, and its first president Serge Adda. Five public television channels came together: TF1, Antenne 2 and FR3 from France, Télévision Suisse Romande from Switzerland and RTBF from Belgium. The "5" in the name came from these five founding broadcasters.
The channel's founding mission was to promote French culture and creation throughout the world. It began broadcasting for three hours a day, first solely in France and then in the Netherlands, sharing programmes from its founding broadcasters with international audiences.
Expansion across the world
With the advent of satellite television, TV5 widened its territory dramatically. It extended to Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean in 1992, to Asia and the Pacific in 1996 with the launch of TV5 Asie-Pacifique, and to the Maghreb and the Middle East in 1998 with TV5 Moyen-Orient. TV5 Québec Canada had been created in September 1988, and the TV5 États-Unis subscription channel launched in the United States in 1996.
Following TF1's privatisation in 1987, the channel retired from the consortium, though it continued to supply programmes until 1995. The network was renamed TV5 Europe from 1989 to 1993, then TV5 again, before taking its current name TV5Monde in 2006 to stress its global focus.
Ownership and funding
TV5Monde is owned by TV5Monde, S.A., with France Télévisions as the largest shareholder alongside France Médias Monde, Radio Télévision Suisse, RTBF, CBC/Radio-Canada, TVMonaco, Télé-Québec, ARTE France and the Institut national de l'audiovisuel. It is financed by the governments of France, Switzerland, Canada, Québec and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
In 2025 the funding governments proposed inviting eight African member states of the International Organisation of La Francophonie to join the channel's governance, with Morocco expressing its intention to become the first African nation in TV5Monde's governance. The network is the official audiovisual operator of the Francophonie organisation.
Programming
TV5Monde broadcasts a rich mix of French-language programming: films, drama series, documentaries, news, current affairs, entertainment and cultural magazines drawn from its partner broadcasters across the francophone world. The network operates eight general channels and two specialised channels, including the children's service TiVi5 Monde and the culture channel TV5Monde Style, alongside the news channel TV5Monde Info.
Its programmes are subtitled in 14 languages, including English, German, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian, extending its reach well beyond French-speaking audiences. The network's news output covers the francophone world and international affairs from a French-language perspective.
TV5Mondeplus and digital
The network's free digital platform TV5Mondeplus offers replays and exclusive original content, with rights agreements covering the whole world. The platform extends the network's reach to viewers who watch on phones, tablets and computers.
TV5Monde also offers extensive French-learning resources, with thousands of free exercises organised by level, alongside quizzes, dictations and games. The language-learning mission is central to the network's identity as the media of the Francophonie.
The 2015 cyber-attack
In April 2015 TV5Monde suffered a major cyber-attack that took its channels off air and compromised its social media accounts. The attack, claimed by a group calling itself the Cyber Caliphate, was among the most serious ever directed at a television broadcaster.
The network recovered its broadcasts and used the experience to strengthen its technical resilience. The attack drew international attention to the vulnerability of media infrastructure and to TV5Monde's symbolic importance as a voice of the francophone world.
TV5Monde in the UK
In the United Kingdom, TV5Monde Europe is available on Virgin Media on channel 825, as well as by satellite and through the TVPlayer streaming service. The channel serves Britain's French-speaking community, one of the largest in Europe, alongside the many British viewers who speak French as a second language or share a love of French culture.
London's French community, centred on South Kensington with its lycée, cultural institute and businesses, forms the core of the channel's British audience. The network's subtitled programming also reaches the wider British public interested in French cinema, drama and current affairs. For the hundreds of thousands of French nationals living in Britain, TV5Monde is the daily link to the francophone world's news and culture.
Audience and reach
TV5Monde's programmes attract an aggregate audience of 60 million viewers per week, with 30 million digital viewers per month, and the network reaches more than 400 million households worldwide. In the United States, where it has been available on satellite since 1998, it has a million viewers, 55 per cent of whom do not speak French. These figures make it one of the most-watched French-language media services on the planet. Its combination of free-to-air satellite, cable carriage and streaming gives it a distribution footprint matched by few international broadcasters. For French speakers in the United Kingdom and around the world, it remains the indispensable window onto the francophone world. Its four decades of broadcasting have made it an institution of French-language media, as familiar to francophones as the broadcasters it represents. The network's commitment to advertising-free, public-service television sets it apart in the international media landscape. Its Paris headquarters coordinate a global operation spanning every continent.
The network claims a place among the top three most available global television networks in the world. Its fortieth anniversary in January 2024 was celebrated across the francophone world as a milestone for French-language media, with the French government hailing four decades of Francophonie carried on the airwaves.
The Francophonie mission
TV5Monde is the official audiovisual operator of the International Organisation of La Francophonie, the body charged with multilateral cooperation to promote the French language, education, peace, democracy and human rights. The channel's programming embodies these values, presenting the diversity of the francophone world from Paris to Dakar, Montréal to Brussels.
Its 14 subtitle languages and its free French-learning resources extend the mission beyond native speakers, making the channel a tool of cultural diplomacy. In classrooms and living rooms around the world, TV5Monde teaches French while showing the cultures that speak it, from West African cinema to Québécois drama.
Four decades of Francophonie
From three hours a day in 1984 to a global network of ten channels reaching 400 million households, TV5Monde's four decades trace the rise of French-language international broadcasting. Its founding mission, to promote French culture and creation throughout the world, remains its guiding purpose.
As the official media of the Francophonie, the network embodies the values of its founding organisation: the French language, education, peace, democracy and human rights. For French speakers in the United Kingdom and around the world, TV5Monde remains the indispensable window onto the francophone world.
