About Udbodhan

Udbodhan: The Bengali Monthly of the Ramakrishna Movement

Overview

Udbodhan is a Bengali-language monthly magazine published by the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission from Kolkata, West Bengal. It is the only Bengali publication of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, and one of the oldest continuously published Bengali periodicals in existence. The magazine was started by Swami Vivekananda in January 1899, with Swami Trigunatitananda as its founding editor. Published from 1 Udbodhan Lane, Baghbazar, Kolkata 700003, it carries the ISSN 0971-4316 and is currently in its 126th year of publication. Over its long life, Udbodhan has grown from a monthly journal into a publishing house that remains one of the leading publishers of the literature of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda. Its 125th anniversary was celebrated in January 2023 at Baghbazar in Kolkata.

Founding by Vivekananda (January 1899)

Udbodhan was founded in January 1899 at the direct initiative of Swami Vivekananda. Before its publication, two journals — Brahmavadin and Prabuddha Bharata — were already being published from Madras under Vivekananda's inspiration, but these were not the official journals of the Ramakrishna Order. Vivekananda wanted a Bengali organ that would carry the message of practical Vedanta and the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna to Bengali readers in their own language. He envisioned Udbodhan occupying a commendable position in contemporary Bengali literature and inducing the Bengali mind toward positive and creative thought. The Prabuddha Bharata was only later taken over by the Ramakrishna Mission, being published first from Almora, then from Mayavati in the Himalayas, where it continues to be edited, and printed in Kolkata — but Udbodhan was the Order's own Bengali foundation from the start.

The Founding Editor: Swami Trigunatitananda

The first editor of Udbodhan was Swami Trigunatitananda, a monastic disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and a brother-monk of Swami Vivekananda. Entrusted by Vivekananda himself with the launch of the Bengali journal, Trigunatitananda shaped its early character and established the standards of Bengali spiritual journalism that the magazine has maintained. His editorship set the pattern of combining devotional literature with serious articles on philosophy, culture and national life. The founding editor's name remains closely associated with the magazine's identity, and the centenary and subsequent anniversary celebrations of the journal have recalled his pioneering role in Bengali publishing.

The Udbodhan Building and Sarada Devi

The magazine's home at Baghbazar in north Kolkata carries its own history. The construction of the present Udbodhan building was begun in 1907 by Swami Saradananda, who was then the editor of the magazine. Once the building was ready, the magazine's office shifted to its ground floor, while the upper floor became the residence of Sri Sarada Devi, the wife of Sri Ramakrishna and the spiritual mother of the Ramakrishna movement. Sarada Devi lived in the upper portion of the Udbodhan house, making the building a place of pilgrimage as well as a publishing office. The association of the journal's office with her residence has given Udbodhan a unique place in the devotional geography of Kolkata.

Growth into a Publishing House

Over the decades, Udbodhan grew beyond a monthly magazine into a full-fledged publishing house. It remains one of the leading publishers of the literature of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda, bringing out books in Bengali that carry the teachings of the masters to a wide readership. The books are published without commercial motive and are priced low, often with subsidies, so that quality spiritual literature remains within the reach of ordinary readers. The Udbodhan office also maintains library facilities, where reading and lending of books are available to visitors. The collection spans history, culture, the Vedas, the Upanishads and other subjects, serving students, devotees and general readers who come to the Baghbazar premises.

Publication Profile

Udbodhan is a monthly magazine in Bengali, published from the Ramakrishna Math's Udbodhan office at 1 Udbodhan Lane, Baghbazar, Kolkata 700003. It is the sole Bengali periodical of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, which publishes its other journals in English, Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Odia, Kannada, Assamese, Malayalam, Telugu and several foreign languages. The magazine's official website, udbodhan.org, provides information about the journal and its publications. The magazine entered its hundredth year in January 1998, and its 125th year was marked in January 2023, an extraordinary run of continuous publication spanning three centuries of Bengali print culture.

Beyond the monthly print issue, the magazine's long back catalogue has been made available in digital form, including a digital edition covering its first hundred years, which allows readers and researchers to access a century of Bengali spiritual journalism. The journal's official website, udbodhan.org, serves as the online presence of both the magazine and the publishing house. The combination of continuous print publication, an affordable book list and digital archiving has kept Udbodhan accessible to new generations of Bengali readers, including those outside Kolkata who order the journal and its books by post.

Content and Purpose

The magazine's contents reflect the mission Vivekananda set for it: to spread the ideas of practical Vedanta and the message of Sri Ramakrishna in Bengali. Its pages carry articles on the life and teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda, expositions of Vedanta philosophy and the scriptures, essays on Indian culture and history, biographical pieces on saints and spiritual figures, and news of the activities of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission. Written in accessible yet literary Bengali, the magazine has aimed to nourish both devotion and intellect, addressing householders, students and monks alike. For generations of Bengali readers, Udbodhan has been a monthly companion in spiritual life.

Editors Through the Years

The editorial chair of Udbodhan has been held by a succession of monks of the Ramakrishna Order. After the founding editor Swami Trigunatitananda came Swami Saradananda, under whose editorship the Udbodhan building was constructed. Later editors included Swami Ritananda, and the present editor is Swami Krishnanathananda. Each editor has carried forward the journal's founding vision while responding to the changing concerns of Bengali readers across more than a century. The continuity of monastic editorship has given the magazine a stable editorial identity, rooted in the spiritual tradition of the Order rather than in commercial publishing cycles.

The 125th Anniversary

On 15 January 2023, the Ramakrishna Mission celebrated the 125th year of Udbodhan's foundation at Girish Mancha in Baghbazar, Kolkata. The celebration brought together the Mission's past and present editors, monks and devotees, along with invited guests including the noted Bengali author Sanjib Chattopadhyay. On the occasion, a collectible volume of 125 years of the magazine's literary work was published, and a special 125th-year edition of Udbodhan was released by the dignitaries present. The event underlined the journal's status as a living institution of Bengali culture — a magazine founded in the nineteenth century that continues to appear every month in the twenty-first, carrying the same message of Vedanta with which Vivekananda launched it.

Legacy in Bengali Print Culture

Udbodhan's place in Bengali publishing history is secure. It belongs to the generation of journals that shaped modern Bengali prose and carried the Bengal renaissance into the twentieth century, and it is among the very few Bengali periodicals to have published without interruption for over 125 years. As the only Bengali mouthpiece of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, it has introduced successive generations of Bengali readers to the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda, and its publishing house has kept the movement's literature affordably available across Bengal and beyond. The magazine stands as a testament to Vivekananda's faith in the printed word as an instrument of spiritual and cultural renewal.
