About U&Eden

U&Eden is a British free-to-air television channel owned by UKTV, the commercial broadcaster wholly owned by BBC Studios. Broadcasting factual entertainment programming across genres including natural history, science, engineering and lifestyle, the channel has been on air since 8 March 2004, when it launched as UKTV Documentary. It was renamed Eden in January 2009 and became U&Eden in October 2024, when it moved from pay television to free-to-air broadcasting and joined the family of UKTV channels unified under the broadcaster's U masterbrand.

The channel's move to free-to-air in 2024 was one of the most significant developments in its twenty-year history, bringing its programming to millions of additional homes through Freeview and Freesat for the first time. Previously available only to pay TV subscribers on Sky and Virgin Media, U&Eden now sits alongside its sister channels U&Dave, U&Drama, U&W and U&Yesterday on Britain's free television platforms, while remaining available to pay TV customers and streaming free on UKTV's U service.

Launch as UKTV Documentary

The channel launched on 8 March 2004 as UKTV Documentary, replacing UK Horizons in UKTV's channel portfolio. Its arrival was part of a restructuring of UKTV's factual output, with the new channel positioned as the home of the broadcaster's documentary programming. In its early years it carried a mix of natural history, science and observational documentary series, drawing on UKTV's programme library and acquisitions from international producers.

UKTV itself had been founded in 1992 as a joint venture between BBC Worldwide and Thames Television, and by the early 2000s it had grown into one of Britain's largest multichannel broadcasters, with a portfolio spanning comedy, drama, lifestyle and factual channels. UKTV Documentary sat within the factual end of that portfolio, complementing the lifestyle output of the Home channel and the entertainment-led Dave.

The Eden rebrand

On 26 January 2009 the channel was relaunched as Eden, with a refreshed identity and a sharpened focus on natural history and science programming. The Eden name, evoking the natural world, signalled the channel's positioning as UKTV's premium destination for blue-chip wildlife and nature documentaries. The rebrand coincided with a widening of the channel's output and investment in high-quality natural history acquisitions, and Eden established itself over the following decade as one of the leading pay TV homes for nature programming in Britain.

As Eden, the channel remained a pay television service, available to subscribers on Sky and Virgin Media but not on free-to-air platforms. Its schedule during this period was dominated by natural history series, alongside science, engineering and adventure documentaries, and it developed a reputation for visually impressive, family-friendly factual programming.

Ownership by BBC Studios

UKTV, and with it Eden, changed hands in 2019 when BBC Studios took full control of the broadcaster and its seven remaining channels. BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the BBC, had previously shared ownership of UKTV with Discovery, but a deal announced that year saw the BBC's commercial subsidiary buy out its partner, bringing channels including Dave, Gold, Alibi, Eden, Yesterday, Drama and W fully under BBC ownership. The move made UKTV one of the most significant commercial assets of the BBC group, while the channels themselves continued to operate as advertising-funded commercial services distinct from the licence-fee-funded BBC channels.

Under BBC Studios ownership, UKTV continued to invest in original programming and to develop its streaming service, UKTV Play, which offered free catch-up and box-set viewing across the channel portfolio. Eden's programming during this period continued to emphasise natural history, though its output gradually widened to include other factual and reality genres.

The U masterbrand

In November 2023 UKTV announced its intention to launch U, a new masterbrand uniting its family of channels and its streaming service. The rebrand was developed in partnership with the brand consultancy Wolff Olins and was presented as a way of creating a more cohesive identity across UKTV's services, following similar moves by other broadcasters. In July 2024 UKTV Play was renamed simply U, and the broadcaster's free-to-air channels adopted the U& prefix, becoming U&Dave, U&Drama, U&W and U&Yesterday.

The three pay TV channels, Gold, Alibi and Eden, were scheduled to follow suit later in the year. Gold and Alibi completed the transition on 7 November 2024, becoming U&Gold and U&Alibi, while Eden's rebrand was tied to its move to free-to-air broadcasting, making its transition the most consequential of the three.

Going free-to-air

On 16 August 2024 Ofcom granted UKTV a new broadcasting licence allowing Eden to become a free-to-air channel, and in September 2024 the channel's satellite encryption was dropped, making it technically available without a Sky subscription for the first time. The move followed a new pay TV carriage deal between UKTV and Sky that covered only the Gold and Alibi channels, releasing Eden from the pay TV bundle and clearing the way for its free-to-air launch.

Eden launched on Freeview on 16 October 2024, taking channel 57 and replacing the timeshift service U&Yesterday+1, and simultaneously adopted the U&Eden name with a refreshed logo and programme line-up. It also launched on Freesat on channel 160. The Freeview launch made U&Eden the fifth UKTV channel on the platform, though its placement on Freeview's DVB-T2 multiplex means it is only receivable on newer Freeview Play and Freeview HD televisions and boxes, with older receivers unable to pick it up and a retune required to find it.

Programming

U&Eden showcases factual and factual entertainment series across a range of genres. Its schedule has included natural history titles such as Expedition with Steve Backshall and Attenborough's Natural Curiosities, alongside Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, the engineering series Abandoned Engineering and the observational documentary series Inside the Ambulance. In the months before its free-to-air launch, the channel's output had already widened beyond nature programming to include other factual and reality genres, with nature content becoming increasingly rare in the schedule.

In 2025 the channel completed its move away from broadcasting natural history programming, repositioning itself as a broader factual entertainment and drama channel. The shift reflected both the competitive landscape for nature documentaries and UKTV's desire to give each of its channels a distinct, sustainable identity within the U family. The channel continues to draw on UKTV's programme library and new acquisitions to fill its schedule.

Timeshift and technical details

U&Eden operates a one-hour timeshift service, U&Eden +1, which was also released from encryption alongside the main channel. On satellite the channel broadcasts in standard definition, while on Freeview it is carried on the DVB-T2 multiplex in standard definition. The channel's standard-definition-only distribution reflects the capacity constraints of the Freeview multiplexes and the economics of free-to-air broadcasting, where high-definition carriage commands a premium.

For viewers with older Freeview equipment, the channel's DVB-T2 placement means an upgrade is needed: a useful rule of thumb is that televisions and boxes that receive BBC One HD on channel 101 are compatible. The channel is available to viewers on relay transmitters, including those in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, who typically receive a smaller range of Freeview channels.

Availability and how to watch

U&Eden is available free-to-air on Freeview channel 57 and Freesat channel 160, and continues to be carried on Sky and Virgin Media, where on Sky's satellite service it can now be viewed without an active subscription following the removal of encryption. On Virgin Media, Sky Stream and Sky Glass, whose closed platforms require a subscription regardless of a channel's free-to-air status, a valid subscription is still needed. The channel and its programmes are also available to stream free on U, UKTV's streaming service, which reported record growth in viewing following its 2024 rebrand.

The free-to-air move substantially expanded the channel's potential audience, bringing its factual entertainment schedule to households without pay TV subscriptions for the first time in its twenty-year history. UKTV has positioned the channel within its free portfolio as the factual entertainment destination of the U family, complementing the comedy of U&Dave, the drama of U&Drama and U&Alibi, and the history programming of U&Yesterday.

Place in the UKTV portfolio

Within UKTV's seven-channel portfolio, U&Eden occupies the factual entertainment position. Its sister channels under the U masterbrand are U&Dave, known for comedy and entertainment; U&Drama, focused on British drama; U&Yesterday, featuring history documentaries and factual programming; U&W, targeting entertainment and lifestyle audiences; and the pay TV channels U&Gold, the home of classic British comedy, and U&Alibi, dedicated to crime drama. Together with the U streaming service and a growing bouquet of free streaming-only FAST channels, the portfolio reaches tens of millions of viewers each month.

The transformation from UKTV Documentary to Eden to U&Eden mirrors the wider evolution of British multichannel television: from the genre-specific pay TV launches of the 2000s, through the brand-building of the 2010s, to the streaming-led, free-to-air-focused landscape of the 2020s. Two decades after its first broadcast, the channel that began as UKTV Documentary has found a new and larger audience as a free-to-air service, completing a journey from niche pay TV outlet to mainstream factual entertainment brand.
