About Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald

Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald

Overview

The Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald is a weekly community newspaper published in Unity, Saskatchewan, serving Unity, Wilkie and the surrounding farm district of west-central Saskatchewan along Highway 14. The 2023 Saskatchewan Media Directory describes it as a weekly that "features local news, sports, ads and classifieds for the Unity community and Northwest Saskatchewan," published from an office at 310 Main Street in Unity. The paper remains in active publication in the mid-2020s: Unity Credit Union's 2025 annual report records, in a sworn affidavit of publication, that notice of the credit union's annual general meeting was published in "The Unity-Wilkie Press Herald" on 26 February 2026, and the June 2025 Saskatchewan Media Directory lists the paper with a current web address on the provincial SaskToday news service. Its compound name preserves the two towns it serves and the two newspaper traditions its masthead joins together.

History

Newspaper publishing in Unity reaches back at least to the 1940s: Saskatchewan Historic Newspapers Online, the University of Saskatchewan's digitisation project, holds an issue of The Unity Herald dated 25 October 1945, and Wilkie likewise had its own weekly; the Press-Herald's hyphenated name records the joining of the two towns' papers into a single weekly for the district, though the surviving directories do not document the year the combination took place and this profile does not assert one. In the 2010s the paper was publishing on Mondays, as its own website posts of the period repeatedly note — issues "fresh off the press for you bright and early Monday morning" — with a single-copy price raised to $1.25 in April 2016 and subscriptions promoted by the paper at less than 50 cents an issue. Issues of that period ran to twenty pages and more; the paper itself described one March 2016 number as "28 pages of local information." The Press-Herald's website of that era, unitystories.com, functioned as a companion to the print paper, posting Friday previews of the coming Monday edition, RCMP reports and photo galleries, before the paper's web presence shifted to the SaskToday platform, where the June 2025 provincial directory lists it.

Programming and Content

The Press-Herald is a full-service prairie weekly. Its standing features, documented through its own issue previews, include the weekly RCMP reports for the Unity, Wilkie and Macklin detachments — a fixture so characteristic that Unity RCMP reports in the paper's format were still appearing through its SaskToday channel in September 2026, covering calls of 18 to 24 August — together with town and rural-municipality council news, school reporting from Unity Public School, St. Peter's School and Unity Composite High School, and extensive minor and senior sports coverage: the UCHS Warriors football team, the Midget AA Lazers and the Unity Miners senior hockey club all feature regularly. Faith Matters, a rotating church column, an editorial page, and a "Blast from the Past" feature drawn from the paper's files are regular elements, alongside obituaries, in-memoriam notices, thank-you cards, classified advertising and the Saskatchewan Agriculture crop report in season. Its school coverage reaches beyond its two towns: the paper's published graduation and scholarship lists span the area's Living Sky School Division schools, including Luseland School, Macklin School, McLurg High School in Wilkie and Kerrobert Composite School, and its sports pages follow the Unity Miners, a senior hockey team the paper has noted is made up entirely of local players. The paper also produces special sections, among them "Evolution" business-profile pages profiling the people and firms serving Unity and area. The paper marks the farm calendar with a special annual Salute to Agriculture issue for National Farm Safety Week, with profiles of area cattle and grain producers, and it gives its fullest community coverage to events such as Celebrate Unity, the town's annual recognition of new and milestone businesses and volunteers, the town's Western Days celebrations, and the Unity Music Festival. SportsCage, Saskatchewan's sports network, was citing the paper's editions as a source for west-central sports news as recently as July 2024, quoting "the July 19 edition of the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald."

Audience and Reach

The Press-Herald's territory is the Unity–Wilkie–Macklin corridor and the surrounding rural municipalities, a grain and cattle farming district whose residents rely on the paper for the record of council decisions, school and sports results, auction and farm news, and statutory and community notices. Local institutions treat it as the district's paper of record: Unity Credit Union has repeatedly placed its legally required annual-meeting notices in the Press-Herald, sworn affidavits of publication recording insertions on 3 March 2023 and, in its 2025 annual report, on 26 February 2026. AdCanada's 2019 network figures, published through the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association, listed the Press-Herald's footprint circulation at 2,117 copies — a dated industry figure, not a current audit, but an indication of the paper's scale in a two-town district. Through its SaskToday presence the paper's local reporting also reaches a provincial online audience beyond its print subscribers.

Digital Presence

The paper's inventoried website is unitystories.com, the companion site the Press-Herald itself operated through the 2010s, on which it posted issue previews, RCMP reports and photographs; the site's content is now archival in character, reflecting that decade rather than the paper's current output. The June 2025 Saskatchewan Media Directory lists the paper's website as its section of sasktoday.ca, the Saskatchewan news platform, under the north-region Press-Herald page — the channel through which its Unity RCMP report content appeared in 2026. Readers following the paper today should therefore look to the SaskToday listing given in the current provincial directory, while unitystories.com remains a useful archive of the paper's 2010s coverage of Unity, Wilkie and Macklin.

Ownership and Organisation

The Press-Herald is a small, locally run publishing operation based at 310 Main Street in Unity. The 2023 Saskatchewan Media Directory lists Helena Long as editor and Tim Holtorf as the advertising contact, with editorial and advertising email addresses held on a SaskTel account under the "northwest.herald" name. No parent company or chain owner is named for the paper in the provincial directories, association records or other sources consulted for this profile, and nothing in those records links the Press-Herald to Saskatchewan's chain-owned newspaper groups; it presents as an independent, editor-led community weekly, and its appearance on the SaskToday platform is a web-publishing arrangement recorded by the directory, not a change of ownership documented anywhere in the sources checked. The paper belongs to the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association's world of community titles: in the association's 2020 awards finalists list, the Press-Herald appears twice, with Helena Long and with Sherri Solomko — the staffer whose byline appears on much of the paper's unitystories.com material — named among the finalists.

Contact and Availability

The Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald's office is at 310 Main Street, Box 309, Unity, Saskatchewan S0K 4L0, telephone (306) 228-2267 and fax (306) 228-2767. The 2023 Saskatchewan Media Directory gives the editorial email address as northwest.herald@sasktel.net and advertising as ads.northwest.herald@sasktel.net; subscriptions are handled through the office telephone number, the same number the paper has long published for subscription orders. The paper is published weekly — its issues were dated Mondays through the period documented by its own website — and is available by subscription and at outlets in Unity and Wilkie, with its current online presence carried on the SaskToday service as listed in the June 2025 Saskatchewan Media Directory.
