About Urdu Radio
Urdu Radio is an Urdu-language radio station broadcasting from Doha, Qatar, on FM 107. Part of the Qatar Broadcasting Service under the Qatar Media Corporation, it has served the Urdu-speaking community since 1980 — beginning as a one-hour programme at 4 p.m. on 1062 kHz, growing to three hours by 1989 and seven hours in the 1990s, before becoming a separate full-time station on FM 107 in 2011. For the Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, Nepali and Sri Lankan communities of Qatar, it is a voice of home.
History
The Urdu service began in 1980 with a single hour at 4 p.m. on 1062 kHz medium wave. The audience — Urdu-speaking workers and families from Pakistan and India — embraced it immediately, and the service grew: three hours a day by 1989, seven hours through the 1990s. In the AM era, the station received letters from listeners in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, proof of its Gulf-wide reach.
In 2011, the Urdu service became a separate station: FM 107, a full-time Urdu channel. The station celebrated its 38th anniversary with the Qatar Media Corporation, honouring presenters including Saif-ur-Rehman and Farzana Safdar. The move to FM gave the service the sound quality and dial position its audience deserved.
Programming
FM 107's schedule blends news, music and talk. News bulletins air twice daily — fifteen minutes at 10:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. — covering Qatar, the Gulf, South Asia and the world. Music spans Urdu classics, ghazals, film songs and contemporary hits. Talk shows address women's issues, health, religion and community concerns, with call-in segments that make the station a two-way conversation with its audience.
The Audience
The Urdu-speaking community of Qatar spans Pakistanis, Indians, Bangladeshis, Nepalis and Sri Lankans — with some Iranian listeners too. For the bachelor community of workers living far from home, the station is, in listeners' own words, "like family": the voice that speaks their language, plays their music and tells them what's happening back home and in Qatar.
The Qatar Media Corporation
Urdu Radio operates under the Qatar Media Corporation, the state broadcasting organisation, as part of the Qatar Broadcasting Service. Its online home is urduradio.qa, with live streaming. The station sits alongside Qatar Radio (Arabic), QBS Radio (English), Oryx FM (French), the Holy Quran service, Sawt Al Khaleej and the other QBS services.
How to Listen
FM 107 broadcasts across Qatar, with streaming at urduradio.qa. Satellite distribution via Es'hail-2 (10,770 MHz, vertical polarisation) extends the reach across the Middle East and North Africa.
Position in Qatar's Media Landscape
Within Qatar, Urdu Radio is the Urdu voice of the national broadcaster — a service that has grown with the community it serves, from one hour on medium wave to a full-time FM station. In a country where Urdu speakers number in the hundreds of thousands, FM 107 is an institution: the station that has kept the community informed, entertained and connected for more than four decades.
