About U&W
Few British television channels have reinvented themselves as often as U&W. Since launching in 2008 it has been a pay-TV general entertainment channel called Watch, a female-skewing lifestyle channel called W, and — since July 2024 — a free-to-air entertainment channel under UKTV's unified "U" masterbrand. Through every incarnation it has remained what it was designed to be: a home for quality British entertainment, from gripping dramas and documentaries to the game shows and real-life series that have made it a Freeview favourite.
Owned by UKTV, the commercial multichannel broadcaster that is itself a subsidiary of BBC Studios, U&W sits at the heart of one of the biggest channel families in British television. Its journey from pay-TV obscurity to free-to-air prominence — via two complete rebrands and a famous inflatable eyeball — is a case study in how British channels adapt, survive and thrive.
History and Launch: Watch (2008)
U&W began life on 7 October 2008 as Watch, launched as part of a sweeping rebrand of UKTV's entertainment portfolio. On the same day, UKTV Gold became G.O.L.D. (later Gold) and UKTV Drama became the crime channel Alibi; Watch was the new general entertainment channel of the trio, replacing UKTV Style +2 and UKTV Gold +1 in the schedules.
Positioned as a "linear catch-up service for modern classics", Watch sat alongside Gold in the pay section of the electronic programme guide. Its launch schedule drew on recent BBC hits — including Torchwood, Mistresses and Larkrise to Candleford — and its flagship original commission was a brand-new primetime weekday show from Richard and Judy, the husband-and-wife presenting duo who had been daytime television royalty on Channel 4.
The channel's original on-screen identity became famous in its own right: a giant inflatable eyeball nicknamed "Blinky", filmed being pushed around various locations by crowds of people, with idents produced by Red Bee Media. In April 2009 the idents were re-edited by Aardman Animations — the creators of Wallace and Gromit — to make the eyeball blink, adding new CGI idents to the set.
The W Years (2016–2024)
On 15 February 2016 the channel was rebranded as W, with a new identity aimed at a female-skewing audience. The W years saw the channel lean into lifestyle, real-life and entertainment programming, becoming known for series such as Emma Willis: Delivering Babies, the hospital documentary Inside the Ambulance and repeats of the daytime quiz Tipping Point.
The most significant development of the W era came in 2022, when the channel moved from pay television to free-to-air. UKTV had been stocking up on Freeview capacity — including the purchase of the CCXTV channel's broadcast slot in 2020 — and the switch made W available to every Freeview household for the first time. The move filled the gap left when UKTV's previous female-skewing channel, Really, had been sold to Discovery in 2019, and it allowed UKTV to boost its ad-supported streaming platform, UKTV Play, with W's catch-up content.
Watch HD had launched on 12 October 2011 on Sky and Virgin Media, two days after Dave HD, as part of UKTV's high-definition rollout, and the HD service continued through the W years.
Ownership: UKTV and BBC Studios
U&W is owned by UKTV, one of Britain's largest multichannel broadcasters, which is itself a wholly owned subsidiary of BBC Studios — the BBC's commercial arm. UKTV's ownership history is complex: it began as a joint venture between the BBC and private partners, with Virgin Media selling its half share to Scripps Networks Interactive in 2011, before BBC Studios took full control in 2019 following a deal in which Discovery acquired UKTV's lifestyle channels, including Really.
As part of BBC Studios, UKTV operates its channels commercially — funded by advertising and carriage deals — while benefiting from privileged access to the BBC's vast programme archive. This relationship gives U&W a deep library of British content, from classic BBC dramas and comedies to recent hits, that few commercial rivals can match.
The Rebrand to U&W (2024)
On 16 July 2024 the channel was rebranded as U&W, part of UKTV's transformation of its entire channel portfolio under the "U" masterbrand. Sister channels became U&Dave, U&Drama, U&Gold, U&Yesterday, U&Alibi and U&Eden, while the UKTV Play streaming service was renamed simply U. The rebrand unified UKTV's linear channels and streaming service under a single identity for the first time.
The new name kept the familiar "W" while signalling the channel's place in the wider U family. For viewers, the change brought refreshed presentation and closer integration with the U streaming service, where U&W's programmes are available on demand.
Programming and Flagship Shows
U&W is a general entertainment channel broadcasting comedies, crime dramas, dramas, game shows and documentaries. Its schedule blends UKTV original commissions with acquisitions and repeats from the BBC archive.
Original programming has been central to the channel's identity. Emma Willis: Delivering Babies, following the presenter as she trained alongside midwives, became one of the channel's signature series during the W era. Inside the Ambulance, the long-running observational documentary following paramedic crews, has been another staple. The channel has also been a prolific commissioner of true-crime and real-life documentaries, daytime game show repeats and celebrity-fronted entertainment formats.
Drama has played an important part in the schedule since the Watch days, when the channel inherited non-crime BBC dramas such as Doctor Who and Jonathan Creek from the old UKTV Drama. The channel continues to air popular drama series, crime procedurals and comedy, drawing on both UKTV commissions and the BBC library.
Audience and Ratings
UKTV does not routinely publish individual channel ratings in the manner of the main public-service broadcasters, but the move to free-to-air in 2022 transformed the channel's potential audience, making it available to millions of Freeview households that had never been able to watch it as a pay-TV service. The channel's real-life documentaries and drama repeats have regularly featured among the most-watched programmes on UKTV's free-to-air portfolio.
The channel's audience skews towards viewers seeking accessible, mainstream entertainment — the "modern classics" proposition of its Watch launch, updated for the streaming age. Its integration with the U streaming service has extended its reach to on-demand viewers, particularly younger audiences who watch little linear television.
Broadcast and Streaming Availability
U&W is available free-to-air across the United Kingdom and Ireland. It broadcasts on Freeview on channel 25, on Freesat, Sky, Virgin Media and TalkTalk TV, with a timeshift service, U&W +1, and a high-definition simulcast. Programmes are available to stream free on U — UKTV's streaming service, formerly UKTV Play — for viewers in the UK and Ireland, alongside box sets and exclusive digital content.
Cultural Impact
U&W's cultural footprint is quieter than that of the big five channels, but it is real. The "Blinky" eyeball idents of the Watch era became minor icons of British television presentation, fondly remembered by presentation enthusiasts. The channel's real-life documentaries — from maternity wards to ambulance crews — pioneered an accessible, empathetic style of factual television that has been widely imitated.
More broadly, the channel's evolution from Watch to W to U&W charts the changing economics of British multichannel television: the decline of pay-TV general entertainment, the rise of free-to-air as an advertising strategy, and the consolidation of channel families under streaming-led masterbrands.
Sister Channels
U&W sits within the UKTV family alongside U&Dave (entertainment and comedy), U&Drama (drama), U&Gold (classic comedy), U&Yesterday (history and factual), U&Alibi (crime drama) and U&Eden (natural history). Together with the U streaming service, the portfolio reaches tens of millions of viewers a month, making UKTV one of the most significant forces in British commercial television.
Recent Developments
The July 2024 rebrand to U&W was the channel's defining recent development, completing UKTV's transformation into a unified "U" brand across linear and streaming. The broadcaster has continued to invest in original commissions for the channel, with new documentaries, dramas and entertainment formats announced as part of UKTV's content strategy.
From the inflatable eyeball of 2008 to the free-to-air entertainment channel of today, U&W has repeatedly reinvented itself to survive — and each reinvention has left it stronger. As part of BBC Studios' commercial portfolio and the wider U family, it is well placed to keep evolving with the viewing habits of its audience.
