About VariFlight

VariFlight

VariFlight (Chinese: 飞常准, pinyin Feichangzhun), operated by Feeyo Technology Co., Ltd., is a civil aviation data service headquartered in Hefei, Anhui, with an international headquarters in Singapore. Founded in 2005 by Zheng Hongfeng, it built its name on a simple promise captured in its vision, "living on time": making flight status transparent in a market where delays were common and information about them was scarce. Today it provides flight status data, airport operation management systems, passenger travel applications and industry data analysis to travellers, airlines, airports and travel businesses around the world, covering the overwhelming majority of global commercial flights.

Founding and early years in Hefei

Wikipedia's company record, drawn from the firm's own materials, dates the founding to 2005 in Hefei, when the company — formerly Hefei VariFlight Technology Co., Ltd. — was established by chief executive Zheng Hongfeng. In its early stages the firm primarily provided flight information services for Chinese enterprises and began research into flight status and delay-related data. The problem it attacked was concrete: Chinese air travellers and the businesses serving them had no reliable, independent way to know whether a flight would depart or arrive on time, because the underlying operational data sat inside airlines and airports.

Building that data capability took several years of accumulation. VariFlight's own account of its development describes successive stages: establishing data processing rights and meeting public needs, creating data products for the market, improving the digital operations of airports, expanding global flight data through cooperation and self-built infrastructure, and most recently promoting data assetisation. That staged history matters because flight data is an infrastructure business: coverage and accuracy compound over time as sources, feeds and ground-station networks are added.

2009: full domestic coverage and the first app

The breakthrough year was 2009. VariFlight released the first version of its flight-tracking application and achieved 100 percent coverage of China's domestic flights — a milestone repeated consistently across its profiles by CANSO, Amadeus's partnership announcement and the company itself. In 2011 it officially launched the passenger-facing flight management app under the Feichangzhun brand, giving individual travellers direct access to the same flight status data. The app accumulated more than 180 million downloads on iOS and Android, according to the 2019 Amadeus partnership release, and its data also reached users through partners such as Baidu and WeChat.

For Chinese travellers, Feichangzhun became a routine part of flying: checking whether an incoming aircraft had arrived, whether a departure was delayed and how long a delay might last. That consumer presence, unusual for a data infrastructure company, is a defining feature of VariFlight's identity in its home market.

International expansion and global coverage

From 2010 VariFlight expanded into international flight data, and by May 2017 it covered over 94 percent of global commercial flights — the figure carried in its own company descriptions and partner releases of that period. More recent company materials put global coverage higher still, and its DataWorks enterprise brand describes ADS-B tracking data covering more than 170,000 flights and 66,000 aircraft daily. The company's big data platform has been described as covering more than 9,000 airports and over 800 airlines globally, accumulated over well over a decade of data gathering.

The international structure matches the data: subsidiaries and offices include Singapore, where its international headquarters sit, and Hong Kong. Its stated customer footprint in recent materials exceeds 1,000 customers across more than 30 countries and regions, supported by a professional team of over 400 providing round-the-clock services, and a data centre processing on the order of 1.5 billion raw data items a day. Those figures come from the company's own current profile material and are best read as the scale the firm itself reports.

The data itself: what VariFlight tracks

VariFlight's data coverage encompasses flight schedules, take-off and landing times, flight trajectories, operational status and meteorological information. In practical terms that means the full life of a flight as data: the published schedule, the estimated and actual departure and arrival, the aircraft's track in the air — including real-time ADS-B position data from its worldwide receiver network — and the weather context that explains disruption. Historical data is retained and analysed: flight operation statistics, take-offs and landings, airport traffic, airline and route capacity, fleet data, in-flight amenities, carbon emissions, historical flight analysis, air cargo capacity and even rail data appear in its platform descriptions.

That breadth supports two kinds of customers. Operational users — airlines, airports, air navigation and ground operations — need the real-time feed. Analytical users — consultants, insurers, lessors, logistics and travel businesses — need the historical record and the derived statistics. VariFlight's product family addresses both.

Products: consumer app, DataWorks and airport systems

The consumer application remains the public face: flight tracking for individual users under the Feichangzhun brand in China and the VariFlight brand internationally. For enterprise customers, VariFlight DataWorks is positioned as the enterprise aviation data brand, delivering APIs and datasets for organisations that depend on accurate, time-sensitive aviation information across travel, insurance, logistics, mobility, technology and aviation itself. A third line serves airports directly: airport operation management systems and related digital tools — including, per industry directory descriptions, ground management, video analysis, runway incursion prevention and terminal operations systems — aimed at improving ground operations, airport management and air traffic efficiency.

Aircraft leasing illustrates the enterprise logic: lessors use VariFlight's integrated monitoring and ADS-B tracking to evaluate and monitor their aircraft assets around the clock, a use case the company promotes directly to the finance side of aviation.

Partnerships and industry standing

VariFlight's 2019 partnership with Amadeus, announced in Hong Kong, integrated its Dynamic Flight Schedule into the travel technology giant's offer and was explicitly framed as a step in VariFlight's expansion beyond its dominant home market, benefiting the hundreds of millions of travellers its data reaches. The company has also partnered with Skyscanner on flight-status services, per its directory record. Memberships and recognitions listed in its own materials include the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO), Airports Council International, ICAO-related participation, the China Air Transport Association and the China Civil Airports Association — the institutional landscape of global aviation, in which a data provider must be embedded to be trusted.

CANSO's member profile summarises the market's view: founded in 2005, VariFlight is "the leading brand providing aviation data services in China," which spearheaded the realisation of Chinese flight data transparency.

Users and scale

The company's most-quoted scale figure is consistent across years of releases: its data is used by over 300 million travellers and thousands of businesses around the world. Within China, its reach extends through its own app's hundreds of millions of downloads and through distribution inside platforms such as Baidu and WeChat. The enterprise side — over 1,000 customers in more than 30 countries and regions in current materials — spans airlines, airports, online travel agencies, travel management companies, insurers and logistics firms.

Why flight data transparency matters

VariFlight's significance in this directory is as an information agency for an entire industry. Aviation runs on shared situational awareness: a delay at one airport propagates through aircraft rotations, crew rosters, connections and ground resources nationwide. Before independent data services, that awareness was fragmented inside individual operators. By aggregating schedules, status, trajectories and weather into one continuously updated picture — and publishing it to travellers as well as professionals — VariFlight changed what Chinese passengers and businesses could expect to know. Its later push into data assetisation, including work on enterprise data rights and financing mechanisms described in its own milestone history, reflects the next stage: flight data as a recognised corporate asset, not just an operational feed.

Access and official website

VariFlight's official website is variflight.com; its enterprise data brand operates at dataworks.variflight.com, and the consumer service is available through the Feichangzhun/VariFlight apps. For this directory, VariFlight is recorded as a Hefei, Anhui, China civil aviation data agency with global operations headquartered internationally in Singapore.
