About Vasanth TV
Vasanth TV is a Tamil-language entertainment satellite channel headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, owned by the Vasanth & Co Group. Launched on 5 May 2008 by retail entrepreneur and Congress politician H. Vasanthakumar, the channel was inaugurated by Congress president Sonia Gandhi from the party’s headquarters in New Delhi on 4 May 2008, with formal broadcasting beginning on 19 May. Conceived as a wholesome family entertainment, news and current-affairs channel, Vasanth TV combined tele-serials, feature films, news bulletins, talk shows, documentaries and programmes highlighting the Congress party’s history and achievements. The channel tied up with Tata Communications for uplinking facilities, and after the passing of its founder in 2020 it has continued under the stewardship of Vinoth Vasanthakumar of the Vasanth & Co Group. Its official website is www.vasanth.tv.
History and Launch
Vasanth TV’s launch was one of the most politically high-profile channel debuts in Tamil Nadu’s television history. H. Vasanthakumar — a Congress MP, the owner of Vasanth & Co, one of India’s largest consumer-durable retail chains, and a former MLA — launched the 24-hour Tamil general entertainment channel with the explicit backing of the Congress party’s top leadership. Sonia Gandhi inaugurated the channel from the Congress headquarters in New Delhi on 4 May 2008, and formal transmission began on 19 May. The launch was widely read as the Congress party’s entry into Tamil Nadu’s channel wars, in a state where almost every major political formation already had a television voice: the DMK identified with Sun TV and Kalaignar TV, the AIADMK with Jaya TV, the PMK with Makkal TV, and the DMDK with Captain TV. Vasanthakumar himself was candid about his modest ambitions, telling the press at launch that he had no plans to compete with Sun TV, the market leader — “I am here for survival. I am nothing compared to Sun TV.”
Founder: H. Vasanthakumar
H. Vasanthakumar (1950–2020) was born in Agastheeswaram in Kanniyakumari district and rose from a salesman in the early 1970s to one of South India’s best-known retail barons. In 1978 he opened his first Vasanth & Co home-appliances showroom in Chennai’s T. Nagar neighbourhood; the chain grew into a leading retail network with showrooms across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry, and Vasanthakumar is credited with pioneering the sale of consumer electronics on equated monthly instalments in India, along with centralised after-sales support. A staunch Congressman from his youth who regarded K. Kamaraj as his political guru, he was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Nanguneri in 2006 and 2016, served as a Congress MP, and rose to vice-president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee. He was also an author — his book Vetri Padikattu, aimed at building self-confidence among youth, was released in September 2006 by actor Rajinikanth and his wife Latha Rajinikanth. Vasanthakumar died in August 2020, and the channel has since been run by his family through the Vasanth & Co Group.
Ownership and Corporate Structure
Vasanth TV is owned by the Vasanth & Co Group and is currently identified with Vinoth Vasanthakumar of the group. The channel operates as the group’s media arm, distinct from but cross-promoted with the retail business that funds and sustains it — a structure that has given Vasanth TV a financial stability unusual among politically launched regional channels. The company tied up with Tata Communications for uplinking facilities at launch, and its registered operations are run from Chennai. Corporate data describes Vasanth TV as a family entertainment, news and current-affairs satellite television company in the entertainment industry, employing over a hundred people.
Programming: Entertainment Mix
Vasanth TV’s schedule blends general entertainment with news and current affairs. Its entertainment slate has included tele-serials, feature films, film-based comedies, reality and game shows, cookery and lifestyle programming. Named shows in its line-up include Aalaya Darisanam (temple visits), Kitchen Killadigal (cookery), Vetri Padi Kattu, Fun O Fun, Thenaruvi, Mann Pesum Sarithram (also rendered Manpesum Sarithiram, historical narratives), Gala Gala Galatta and Marmam, alongside social and value-based programmes such as Thayillamal Naanillai. The channel has also aired a wide library of Tamil feature films, with its film lists spanning titles from the 2010s such as Ochayee, Lathika, Mudhal Kadhal Mazhai, Attu, Bongu, Maaveeran Kittu, Nenjil Thunivirundhal, Chennaiyil Oru Naal 2 and Dha Dha 87 through to 2020 releases like Pizhai and Day Knight.
News, Current Affairs and Political Programming
From its inception, Vasanth TV carried regular news bulletins, news headlines and current-affairs programming alongside entertainment — positioning itself as a full-spectrum channel rather than a pure entertainment play. A distinctive part of its remit was programming focused on the Congress party and its achievements, including documentaries and tele-films on the sacrifices of Congress leaders before and after Independence and on historic and heroic events in India’s freedom struggle. This political-educational strand set Vasanth TV apart from apolitical entertainment rivals and reflected its founder’s dual identity as retailer and Congressman. The channel has described its editorial commitment as providing unbiased and meaningful content with a unique programme mix.
Distribution Battles
Vasanth TV’s early years were marked by a carriage struggle that illustrated the power of distribution in Tamil Nadu television. At launch the channel was not available on Sumangali Cable Vision (SCV) — the multi-system operator arm of the Maran family’s Sun TV Group — nor on Hathway, which together controlled a major share of cable distribution in the state. Vasanthakumar said at the time that he was in talks with both operators and hopeful of a resolution. The episode underscored the structural challenge facing any new Tamil channel: in a market where the dominant broadcaster also owned the dominant cable networks, carriage itself was a political and commercial battleground. Over time the channel secured wider distribution on cable and direct-to-home platforms across Tamil Nadu and beyond.
Reach and Availability
Vasanth TV broadcasts in Tamil across India in standard definition (576i SDTV), carried on cable networks and DTH platforms serving Tamil Nadu and Tamil-speaking audiences elsewhere. Its satellite footprint and online streaming extend its availability to the Tamil diaspora. The channel’s office address has been listed as 14, Railway Border 1st Street, Chennai, and its broadcast operations — studios, newsroom and transmission — are run from the city. Within Tamil Nadu’s crowded general-entertainment market, Vasanth TV has positioned itself as a family-oriented alternative, trading less on star-driven serial wars and more on its mix of films, devotional content, news and value-based programming.
Digital and Online Presence
Vasanth TV’s official website, www.vasanth.tv, serves as its digital home, offering programme information and live streaming of the channel. The channel also maintains a presence on YouTube and social media platforms, where clips of its serials, film offerings, devotional shows and news bulletins reach viewers beyond the linear broadcast. The website and streaming presence have become increasingly important as Tamil audiences, particularly younger viewers and the diaspora, shift part of their viewing to mobile and on-demand platforms.
Vasanth & Co: The Retail Backbone
The channel’s parent brand, Vasanth & Co, is one of South India’s most recognisable retail names — a consumer electronics and home-appliances chain founded in 1978 that grew from a single T. Nagar showroom into a network of more than sixty showrooms across four states. The retail business’s innovations in instalment-based selling and after-sales service made Vasanthakumar a household name in Tamil Nadu long before he entered television, and the trust the retail brand commands has been a quiet asset for the channel. The group’s continued ownership keeps Vasanth TV within a family-run conglomerate rather than a pure-play media company, a structure that has insulated it from the ownership churn that has afflicted several other politically launched Tamil channels.
Legacy and Place in Tamil Television
Vasanth TV occupies a distinctive niche in Tamil Nadu’s media history as the Congress party’s answer to the state’s politically owned channels — launched with a party president’s blessing, sustained by a retail empire, and still broadcasting more than a decade and a half later. Its founder’s famous humility at launch — disavowing any plan to challenge Sun TV — set the tone for a channel that has survived by serving a loyal family audience rather than chasing the ratings crown. In a market where channels have frequently changed hands or shut down, Vasanth TV’s continuity under the Vasanth & Co Group makes it one of the more durable experiments in politically affiliated regional broadcasting.
