The Vauxhall Advance is a community weekly newspaper serving the town of Vauxhall, Alberta, and the surrounding farm country of the Municipal District of Taber in the province's south. Published every Thursday, it is the local paper of record for Vauxhall and for the neighbouring communities of Hays and Enchant, covering municipal and county government, schools, agriculture, minor hockey and baseball, and the everyday institutional life of a small irrigation-farming district. Despite the word "independent" sometimes attached to it in directory listings, the Advance is not an independent newspaper: it is part of the Alta Newspaper Group Limited Partnership, the southern Alberta chain whose flagship titles are the Lethbridge Herald and the Medicine Hat News dailies, and it shares editorial resources with its sister paper, the Taber Times. The paper is a current member of the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association (AWNA), and dated stories carrying the Vauxhall Advance masthead were still appearing through the summer and autumn of 2026, including a report on the 2026 Vauxhall Foodgrains harvest published in August 2026.
The Advance is a comparatively young paper by Alberta weekly standards. According to the published history of its sister paper, the Taber Times, the Vauxhall Advance was founded in 1978 by H. George Meyer and Walter Koyanagi, the owners of the Taber Times, who had bought the Coaldale Sunny South News in the early 1970s and extended their small chain north to Vauxhall. The three papers were printed in Taber, where Meyer and Koyanagi had installed the first web offset press south of Calgary, and the Taber plant went on to print more than twenty community, university, college and high school newspapers.
Meyer and Koyanagi owned and operated the Taber, Coaldale and Vauxhall papers until September 1987, when they were sold to David Carpenter, who formed a new company called Taber Publications. On May 1, 1989, Carpenter sold the three community papers and the printing operation to Armadale Co. Limited, whose other holdings at the time included the Regina Leader-Post and the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. On December 31, 1995, Armadale announced the sale of its Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta interests to Hollinger Inc., and the Taber, Coaldale and Vauxhall newspapers were included in the transaction. Four months later Hollinger transferred the three southern Alberta weeklies to the Thomson Newspaper Group, with the sale completed November 1, 1996; in conjunction with that sale the newspaper presses were relocated to the Lethbridge Herald building in Lethbridge, where the papers have been printed since. In November 2000 the group of papers was sold again and became part of the Alta Newspaper Group Limited Partnership, the publisher that still owns the Advance today.
The Advance publishes the standard mix of a southern Alberta community weekly: town and Municipal District of Taber council coverage, regional fire and emergency services reporting, school and school-division news, court and police items, farm and irrigation news, sports, obituaries, classifieds and letters to the editor. Its sports coverage leans heavily on the Vauxhall Academy of Baseball, the elite high school baseball program based in the town, whose Jets teams the paper follows through their fall and spring seasons. Community institutions such as the Vauxhall and District Growing Project of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank — whose 24th crop was harvested in August 2026 with seventeen combines — receive detailed local coverage.
Because the Advance is produced within a small chain, its pages blend Vauxhall-specific reporting with material shared across the Alta group's southern Alberta titles. In the autumn of 2025, for example, reporter Trevor Busch's stories on Municipal District of Taber Regional Fire Services training and staffing appeared under the Vauxhall Advance masthead, while the paper's own Local Journalism Initiative reporter, Heather Cameron, covered Vauxhall stories such as the Foodgrains harvest. Cameron's byline also appears in the group's Raymond-area Westwind Weekly News, illustrating how the chain's small newsrooms pool their reporting across the district. A regular heritage feature, Samantha Johnson's "From the Archives of Western Newspapers" column, written for Southern Alberta Newspapers, was still running in the Advance in July 2026. Group content from the Lethbridge Herald and Medicine Hat News newsrooms rounds out provincial and national coverage, and opinion material ranges from local letters to nationally syndicated columns. In the paper's own published description of itself, the Advance says it "strives to present an accurate and interesting reflection of community affairs and a forum for public opinion" — a mission statement borne out by its busy letters page, which carried reader correspondence on national issues as recently as October 30, 2025.
The paper's own published profile describes the Advance as a paid-circulation weekly of approximately 800 copies per issue, serving the towns of Vauxhall, Hays and Enchant; that figure is the publisher's own description rather than an audited number, and no independently audited circulation for the paper has been published. Vauxhall itself is a town of roughly a thousand people in the Municipal District of Taber, in the irrigated farm belt between Taber and Brooks, and the Advance's readership extends across the surrounding rural municipality, where the paper's own profile notes that residents take an avid interest in local affairs. Its audience is therefore small but intensely local: farmers, town residents, school families and the businesses of the Taber district that advertise to them. Online, the paper reaches readers through its website and through the group's shared digital platforms.
The Advance publishes online at vauxhalladvance.com, a site built and hosted within the Alta group's digital operation; most websites associated with Alta and its sister company Continental Newspapers are credited to TriCube Media, Alta's Medicine Hat-based web and branding division. Stories from the site are indexed by media-monitoring services, which recorded Vauxhall Advance items dated October 16, 2025, letters published on the site on October 30, 2025, and locally reported stories through August 2026, confirming the site is actively maintained. The Advance is also listed in the current member directory of the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association, which markets its members jointly to regional and national advertisers.
The Vauxhall Advance is owned by the Alta Newspaper Group Limited Partnership, a Vancouver-based private publisher of three small dailies and more than a dozen weeklies in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Quebec. Alta operates its southern Alberta papers through the Southern Alberta Newspapers division. Vancouver-based Glacier Media holds a 59 percent interest in Alta, with the remaining 41 percent held by founder David Radler, the former Hollinger chief operating officer who assembled the chain out of Thomson properties purchased between 1999 and 2001 through his Horizon companies. Alongside the Advance, the group's Alberta properties include the Lethbridge Herald and Medicine Hat News dailies and the Taber Times, Coaldale Sunny South News, Bow Island Commentator and Prairie Post weeklies. Editorially, the Advance works closely with the Taber Times newsroom: stories filed for the Advance in 2025 carried the Taber paper's editorial contact address, and the two papers share reporters and photography. The Advance's local reporting in 2026 included a Local Journalism Initiative reporter, Heather Cameron, dedicated to Vauxhall coverage.
The Vauxhall Advance is published every Thursday in Vauxhall, Alberta, and is available by paid subscription and at local outlets in Vauxhall, Hays and Enchant, as well as online at vauxhalladvance.com. Editorial correspondence for the paper has been published under the shared Taber newsroom address editor@tabertimes.com, which appeared on Vauxhall Advance stories in the autumn of 2025. Advertising for the paper is sold through the Alta Newspaper Group and the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association's joint advertising programs.
