VDI nachrichten is the German weekly newspaper for technology, business, and society, published by the VDI Verlag in Düsseldorf. Appearing since October 1921 as the news organ of the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure, the newspaper reports on developments in technology and the economic and societal conditions surrounding them. With a sold circulation of 105,292 copies in the second quarter of 2026 and an estimated readership reaching from career starters to technical specialists and managers, it is Germany's opinion-forming media brand for engineering and technical management.
Overview
The fortnightly Friday rhythm gives the engineering community its regular technology briefing: the every-two-weeks print newspaper, with the daily digital-first articles behind the paywall and the Tuesday email newsletter's weekly news. The 105,292 sold copies in the second quarter of 2026 document the newspaper's stable engineering readership.
The four-section structure defines the editorial program: the Technik & Gesellschaft section's technology-society reporting, the Technik & Wirtschaft section's industrial economics, the Technik & Finanzen section's technology finance, and the Management & Karriere section's engineering career journalism with the job market. The twice-yearly "Ingenieur Karriere" and "MBA for Engineers" supplements extend the career service.
The VDI membership distribution gives the newspaper its institutional base: all VDI members receive the supraregional weekly as part of their membership, alongside the subscription and magazine retail availability. The 2017 estimated 365,000 readers, from the career starter to the technical specialist and manager, document the newspaper's professional reach.
VDI nachrichten is a weekly newspaper that reports on developments in technology and technology as well as the associated framework conditions in business and society. It has appeared, originally as VDI-Nachrichten, with interruptions since 1921. The weekly appears every two weeks on Fridays. It is available by subscription. VDI members receive VDI nachrichten as part of their VDI membership.
Since the end of 2014, the newspaper has appeared in tabloid format, after previously appearing in Nordic format. The VDI nachrichten can be obtained in both printed and electronic form. In January 2022, the switch to "digital first" was made. Since then, several articles have been published daily, first on vdi-nachrichten.com behind a paywall. In addition, every Tuesday VDI members and subscribers are informed by email about the most important news of the week.
The newspaper's four editorial sections structure the technology journalism: Technik & Gesellschaft, Technik & Wirtschaft, Technik & Finanzen, and Management & Karriere including the job market with a focus on engineering professions. Twice a year, the magazines "Ingenieur Karriere" and "MBA for Engineers" are enclosed with the newspaper.
History
The 1921 founding as the Wednesday edition of the VDI's journal places the newspaper in the Weimar Republic's engineering press: the No. 41a first issue on October 5, 1921, serving the Verband Technisch-Wissenschaftlicher Vereine as its organ. The 1930 Deutsche Gesellschaft für Bauwesen weekly's integration expanded the construction coverage.
The Nazi-era renamings document the regime's press control: the 1934 RTA-Nachrichten, the 1935 Rundschau Technischer Arbeit, the June 1935 Der Jungingenieur supplement's political-ideological instruction, the end-1937 sole NSBDT organ status, and the 1938–1945 Rundschau Deutscher Technik with the 1942 monthly rhythm. The post-war interruption ended with the VDI's 1946 British-zone re-founding.
The Düsseldorf era's format milestones trace the modernization: the 2005 e-paper launch, the December 2014 tabloid conversion responding to the 92-percent reader vote, and the January 2022 digital-first switch with the daily paywalled articles and the Tuesday email newsletter. The October 6, 2023 VDI Verlag centenary celebrated 100 years of technology journalism.
The first issue of the VDI-Nachrichten was published as No. 41a on October 5, 1921. It was the Wednesday edition of the Zeitschrift des Vereines deutscher Ingenieure and served the Verband Technisch-Wissenschaftlicher Vereine as its organ. In 1930, the Wochenschrift of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Bauwesen became part of the VDI-Nachrichten.
After the Nazi seizure of power, the journal was renamed RTA-Nachrichten in 1934. In 1935, the renaming to Rundschau Technischer Arbeit followed. From June 1935, the monthly supplement Der Jungingenieur appeared for the political-ideological instruction of the technical youth. At the end of 1937, the newspaper, as it usually yielded financial returns, became the sole organ of the NSBDT. From 1938 to 1945, the newspaper appeared under the title Rundschau Deutscher Technik. In 1942, its publication rhythm was changed to monthly.
The post-war VDI's 1946 re-founding in the British zone and the 1949 Düsseldorf headquarters choice gave the newspaper its Düsseldorf base. The VDI Verlag's 100th anniversary on October 6, 2023 documents the publisher's century of technology journalism. The 2014 tabloid conversion, the 2005 e-paper launch, and the 2022 digital-first switch trace the newspaper's format evolution.
Coverage and Content
The technology-policy journalism covers the framework conditions: the AI regulation, the energy transition's engineering challenges, and the innovation location Germany's qualification offensive that the 2026 VDI AI study documents. The study's finding that 80 percent of engineers see urgent need to expand their skills shows the newspaper's research-driven technology reporting.
The industrial economics journalism serves the technical management: the detailed reports on all current developments of technology, with the business section's company and market coverage. The VDI Media's self-description as creating the unique knowledge base for technical management, with the competence and quality of target-group-specific publications, defines the editorial mission.
The engineering career journalism is the newspaper's service core: the Management & Karriere section's job market with the engineering professions' focus, the Recruiting Tag's nationwide free career fair for the job-seeking and job-changing engineers and IT specialists. The 2014 Horizont report's 92-percent reader vote for the tabloid format shows the newspaper's reader-responsive evolution.
VDI nachrichten covers the technology-society nexus: the Technik & Gesellschaft section's technology policy and societal impact reporting, the Technik & Wirtschaft section's industrial and innovation economics, the Technik & Finanzen section's technology investment coverage, and the Management & Karriere section's engineering career and job market journalism.
The digital-first strategy gives the readers the daily technology news: the several daily paywalled articles on vdi-nachrichten.com, with the Tuesday email newsletter's weekly news briefing for the VDI members and subscribers. The 2026 studies, like the VDI AI study on the engineers' continuous learning needs, document the newspaper's research journalism.
The career journalism serves the engineering profession: the Management & Karriere section's job market with the engineering focus, the twice-yearly "Ingenieur Karriere" and "MBA for Engineers" supplements, and the VDI nachrichten Recruiting Tag, the nationwide free career fair for job-seeking and job-changing engineers and IT specialists.
