About VernonMatters

VernonMatters

Overview

VernonMatters is an online local news service for Vernon and the North Okanagan region of British Columbia, publishing at vernonmatters.ca. Despite sometimes being described as an independent site, it is not a standalone startup: VernonMatters is one of the online news portals operated by Pattison Media Ltd., the large western-Canadian broadcasting company, and it works out of the same downtown Vernon newsroom as Pattison's local radio station, 107.5 Beach Radio (CJIB-FM). Its positioning is summed up in its own slogan: "If it matters to you, it matters to us."

The service covers the daily life of Vernon and its surrounding communities — among them Coldstream, Lumby, Armstrong and the wider Regional District of North Okanagan — with staff-reported news on municipal government, police and emergency services, wildfires, courts, roads, community events and lifestyle topics. It publishes on the web and through a mobile app that also streams its sister radio station.

History

VernonMatters is a product of Pattison Media's expansion of its radio newsrooms into branded local news websites. Pattison Media Ltd. is the company formerly known as the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group; it renamed itself Pattison Media in 2021 as it developed a network of online news portals alongside its radio and television stations. In a company announcement of 20 February 2026, Pattison Media recalled that its Okanagan sales leadership — Bryan Ford, appointed general sales manager for the Okanagan division in 2017 — had "expanded its digital presence with the launch of Vernon Matters and Kelowna10," the sister portal for Kelowna. The Vernon Matters mobile app has been available on Google Play since September 2020, and the portal was established by that period as the digital companion to 107.5 Beach Radio, whose call sign is CJIB-FM.

The portal's development since then has followed the Pattison model: a shared broadcast-digital newsroom in which radio reporters file for both air and web. Pattison Media said in February 2026 that its Okanagan team had become one of the company's top digital-performing markets in 2025, a performance it credited in part to the Vernon Matters and Kelowna10 portals. The company is part of the Jim Pattison Group, and its British Columbia radio and portal brands — including Beach Radio stations in Vernon and Kelowna and the Kelowna10 news site — operate as a regional cluster in the Okanagan. Pattison station materials group the cluster explicitly, noting that "Vernon Matters, 107.5 Beach Radio, The Lizard 104.7, 103.1 Beach Radio and Kelowna10 are Pattison Media companies." From 2021 the portals also carried Pattison's AMPLIFY Canada campaign, a company-wide initiative that invited the public to nominate local businesses and nonprofits for profile coverage across Pattison's station and news-portal websites.

Content and Coverage

VernonMatters publishes staff-reported local news throughout the day. Municipal coverage is a staple: meetings and decisions of Vernon city council and of neighbouring Coldstream council, regional district business, infrastructure projects and local services. Public-safety reporting is prominent in a region where wildfire is a recurring emergency — its reporters cover BC Wildfire Service incidents, evacuation alerts, police files from the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, court cases and serious collisions on the highways around the city, including Highway 97 and Highway 6.

The service also covers community and lifestyle material: local events, recreation, real estate and development, and stories generated by its sister station's on-air programming. Trail and recreation development features in its pages — its reporters covered the staged opening of the North Okanagan Shuswap Rail Trail, the roughly 50-kilometre Splatsin te Secwépemc trail project running from Armstrong toward Sicamous — alongside school, agriculture and small-business stories from the farming communities around the city. Named reporters file under their own bylines; Muck Rack's index of the outlet's journalism, for example, tracks Vernon Matters reporter Liam Verster, whose stories in August 2026 included Coldstream's decision to join the provincial electric kick-scooter pilot project, provincial funding for Coldstream's emergency operations centre, and the containment of lightning-sparked wildfires north of Lumby. Stories dated through August and September 2026 confirm the portal was publishing current local news at the time of this profile's preparation. Coverage is hyperlocal by design: the portal does not attempt national or international news beyond wire material relevant to its readers, concentrating instead on the city of Vernon and the North Okanagan.

Audience and Reach

VernonMatters serves the city of Vernon — one of the principal communities of the North Okanagan — and the surrounding regional district, an area whose population is spread across small cities, districts and rural communities. The outlet publishes no audited audience figures, and none are claimed here. Its reach rests on three legs: the vernonmatters.ca website, the free Vernon Matters mobile app, and cross-promotion with 107.5 Beach Radio, whose listeners are directed to the portal for the full text of stories heard on air. Parent company Pattison Media describes itself as Canada's largest private, western-based media company, headquartered in Kamloops, British Columbia, with operations it lists as 50 radio stations, three television stations and 21 online news portals in 30 markets across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba — figures stated by the company itself in its station materials.

Digital Presence

The portal's home is vernonmatters.ca, updated daily with news, community-event listings and contesting tied to its radio sister. The Vernon Matters app, published by Pattison Media Ltd. on Google Play (where it has been listed since September 2020 and was updated in December 2024), combines the news feed with a live stream of 107.5 Beach Radio's classic-hits programming, contests and community-event tracking. The outlet's app description presents the Vernon newsroom as "the most-experienced team of broadcast journalists and news reporters in the Okanagan" — the outlet's own characterisation. VernonMatters stories are also indexed by third-party news aggregators and journalist databases, which track its reporters' bylines across the Pattison network's British Columbia sites.

Ownership and Organisation

VernonMatters is owned and operated by Pattison Media Ltd., the media division of the Jim Pattison Group and the company known until 2021 as the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group. Pattison Media is headquartered in Kamloops, British Columbia. The Jim Pattison Group, founded and solely owned by Jim Pattison, has been described in Pattison's own station coverage as Canada's largest privately held company. Locally, VernonMatters is produced by the Pattison newsroom in downtown Vernon that it shares with 107.5 Beach Radio (CJIB-FM); the two brands present themselves as a single local operation, headquartered, in the app's words, "in the heart of the North Okanagan in downtown Vernon." The portal is one of 21 online news portals in the Pattison network, each attached to a local radio market; its Okanagan sister properties include the Kelowna10 news portal and the Beach Radio stations in Kelowna. Editorial staff are Pattison Media employees working across the radio and digital brands in the market.

Contact and Availability

VernonMatters publishes free of charge at https://vernonmatters.ca/, with no paywall, and its mobile app is available free on Google Play. The Vernon newsroom it shares with 107.5 Beach Radio is in downtown Vernon, British Columbia. Pattison Media's published developer contact address is 1800–1067 West Cordova Street, Vancouver, BC V6C 1C7, and the company lists info@pattisonmedia.com for general enquiries; the app listing also carries the legacy support address info@jpbg.ca. No public business email for the outlet itself is recorded in this profile's directory fields.
