About Virgin 103.1 (CKMM)
Virgin 103.1 (CKMM)
103.1 Virgin Radio (CKMM-FM) is Winnipeg's contemporary hit radio station — a Bell Media outlet broadcasting on 103.1 MHz, branded as "Winnipeg's #1 Hit Music Station." The station signed on February 14, 1980, as CKWG-FM with a near-freeform format, and has worn the call signs CHZZ (Z103), CKLU (103 U FM/Mix 103), and CKMM, with formats ranging from adult contemporary to country ("Star 103") to Top 40 ("Hot 103") before joining the Virgin Radio network on August 31, 2012.
Overview
CKMM-FM is a commercial FM station licensed to Winnipeg, Manitoba, owned by Bell Media through its Bell Media Radio division. It broadcasts on 103.1 MHz, with studios at 1445 Pembina Highway (with sister station CFWM-FM) and a transmitter at Duff Roblin Provincial Park.
The station's format is contemporary hit radio (CHR), and it is part of Bell Media's Virgin Radio network across Canada. Its broadcast area covers the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region. Sister stations in the Bell Media Winnipeg cluster include CFWM-FM (Bounce 99.9).
History
On March 13, 1979, Armadale Communications was awarded a licence for a new FM station in Winnipeg on 103.1 MHz. On February 14, 1980, the station signed on as CKWG-FM with a near-freeform format. On August 21, 1989, it flipped to adult contemporary; the following year it was sold to Western World Communications. The call signs changed over the years — from CHZZ-FM (Z103) to CKLU-FM (103 U FM, then briefly Mix 103) and finally CKMM-FM. The "Mix" era was managed by Jim Millican, once tour manager of famed Winnipeg band The Guess Who, with Barry Horne as program director.
In 1996, the station switched to country as "Star 103." When CKMM and CFQX-FM came under Craig Broadcasting, the format was changed to avoid redundancy, and CKMM relaunched as Top 40/CHR "Hot 103" on New Year's Eve, 1997. CKMM and CFQX became properties of Standard Radio in 2002. On October 29, 2007, Astral Media took over CKMM in its buyout of Standard Radio. As part of Astral's merger with Bell Media on June 27, 2013, sister stations CFQX and CHIQ were sold to the Jim Pattison Group to meet ownership limits.
On August 31, 2012, CKMM rebranded as "103.1 Virgin Radio," becoming the seventh Virgin-branded station in Canada. The flip was promoted with a commercial-free weekend and the Virgin Radio street team "Paying it Forward." The station entered the rebrand as the number-one station in Winnipeg for females 18–34 and 25–54.
103.1 has lived many lives. On March 13, 1979, Armadale Communications was awarded a licence for a new Winnipeg FM station on 103.1 MHz, and on February 14, 1980, it signed on as CKWG-FM with a near-freeform format. On August 21, 1989, it flipped to adult contemporary. The following year it was sold to Western World Communications, and the call signs cycled — CHZZ-FM (Z103), then CKLU-FM (103 U FM, briefly Mix 103); the Mix-era general manager was Jim Millican, once tour manager of The Guess Who, with Barry Horne programming and Adrian Bell on mornings alongside beloved Winnipeg broadcaster Maureen Murphy. The CHZZ calls were also used on the Videon Cable program guide through the 1980s and early 1990s.
In 1996 the station switched to country as Star 103; when CKMM and CFQX-FM came under Craig Broadcasting, CKMM was relaunched on New Year's Eve 1997 as Hot 103 with Top 40/CHR to avoid redundancy with the country station. CKMM and CFQX became Standard Radio properties in 2002, and on October 29, 2007, Astral Media took over CKMM in its buyout of Standard. As part of the 2013 Astral-Bell merger, CFQX and Bell's CHIQ-FM were sold to the Jim Pattison Group to meet ownership limits.
On August 31, 2012, CKMM became 103.1 Virgin Radio — the seventh "Virgin"-branded station in Canada — with a commercial-free weekend and the Virgin street team's "Paying It Forward" campaign handing out gas fill-ups and bar tabs. The rebrand targeted females 18–44, slightly narrower than Hot 103.1's focus; the station entered the flip as Winnipeg's number-one station for females 18–34 with a 17.2% share of hours tuned, and number one for females 25–54 at 16.2%, per Numeris PPM data. In the spring 2017 Numeris book the station ranked fourth in Winnipeg 12+ with an 8.0 share, up from 6.7 a year earlier.
Programming
Virgin 103.1 plays today's hit music — Top 40/CHR — targeting young listeners, particularly females 18–44. The station's programming includes morning and drive-time shows, contests, and promotions tied to concerts and pop culture. As part of the Virgin Radio network, it shares branding and some networked content with sister Virgin stations across Canada.
Coverage and Audience
CKMM's signal covers the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region. The station targets young listeners, competing with Rogers' KiSS 102.3, Evanov's Hot 100.5, and streaming services for CHR audiences. In Spring 2017, it held an 8.0 share in the 12+ demographic per Numeris data.
The Virgin rebrand's ratings story is told in the Numeris books. In spring 2015 (survey March 2–April 26), the station held a 9.0 share with 171.9 thousand central reach, up 0.7 — fourth in the Winnipeg market behind CBC Radio One (11.9), CJOB (11.5), and CFQX (9.9). By spring 2017 the share was 8.0 (still fourth), and in fall 2019 it was 5.9 (sixth, tied with CITI) — the competitive churn of the CHR market showing in the numbers.
The station's physical home is 1445 Pembina Highway, shared with sister station CFWM-FM (Bounce 99.9), with its transmitter at Duff Roblin Provincial Park. The 2012 Virgin launch was one of Astral's last big moves before the Bell takeover: Media in Canada's September 2012 coverage notes the rebrand followed the same move in London, Ontario, a month earlier, and that Astral operated Virgin stations in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg, and London — the CRTC hearings on BCE's purchase of Astral's assets, including the radio properties, began the following week. Longtime Astral Manitoba VP and GM Sharon Taylor, whose radio career had criss-crossed Moose Jaw, Winnipeg, London, Ottawa, and Toronto, fronted the rebrand messaging.
Ownership
CKMM-FM is owned and operated by Bell Media, Canada's largest commercial broadcaster. Bell acquired the station in 2013 as part of its purchase of Astral Media. Earlier owners included Armadale Communications (1980–1990), Western World Communications (1990–1996), Craig Broadcasting (1996–2002), Standard Radio (2002–2007), and Astral Media (2007–2013).
The station streams through Bell's iHeartRadio platform at iheartradio.ca/virginradio/winnipeg, with studios at 1445 Pembina Highway in Winnipeg (shared with Bounce 99.9) and a published contact line at 204-944-1031. Social channels under @VirginRadioWPG carry the "Winnipeg's #1 Hit Music Station" positioning to a young, female-skewing audience — the same demographic the 2012 rebrand was built around.
The Virgin Radio network branding is licensed from the Virgin Group, part of the national CHR identity Bell Media applies across its hit-music stations.
Digital Presence
Virgin 103.1 streams live through Bell Media's iHeartRadio Canada platform, with podcasts and show highlights available on demand. The station maintains active social media accounts promoting its hosts, concerts, and contests. The station is associated with the iheartradio.ca/virginradio/winnipeg web portal; directory listings cite that URL as the station's official website.
The station's history — from the 1980 CKWG-FM launch through the Z103, Mix 103, Star 103, and Hot 103 eras to the Virgin rebrand — is documented by Media in Canada's industry coverage and in CRTC licensing records.
