About VTV

VTV

VTV is an Indonesian private digital terrestrial television network based in South Jakarta. It is owned by Visi Media Asia, known as VIVA, part of the Bakrie Group, through Intermedia Capital, and its sister channels are ANTV and tvOne. The network broadcasts in Indonesian and is aimed at young families, especially children, with family entertainment programming. It was officially launched under the VTV name on 9 January 2023, but its history is much longer: for almost a decade before that it existed as sportOne, a sports channel project that began test broadcasts in July 2013. This VTV is an Indonesian channel and has no connection with Vietnam Television, which uses the same initials in Vietnam.

Conceived as VIVA's sports channel

VTV began as a television project based on sports events owned by VIVA, named sportOne. The project started in 2011, with an initial focus on international and local sports programmes. VIVA, the Bakrie Group's media holding, already operated ANTV, a general entertainment network, and tvOne, which had been relaunched in 2008 as a news and sports channel. A dedicated sports service was intended to give the group a third string: a channel that could carry sports rights and sports programming continuously rather than fitting them around news and entertainment schedules.

Indonesian reporting from the project's early period reflects that ambition. VIVA's own news service reported in November 2011 on the group building a sports television operation, and in March 2012 reported that Sport One would be on air by the end of that year. The group's corporate presentations of the period also referred to launching the sportOne channel on a pay television platform. In the event, the launch took longer than those early reports suggested, and when the channel did appear it was on digital terrestrial television rather than as a purely pay service.

Trial broadcasts from 2013

sportOne started trial digital television broadcasts in Jakarta in July 2013, with 1 July 2013 recorded as its test broadcast launch date. The timing placed it among the early occupants of Indonesia's developing digital terrestrial system, years before the national analogue switch-off made digital reception universal. Being early, however, also meant broadcasting to a very small equipped audience, because most Indonesian households still watched analogue television throughout the 2010s.

The channel then remained in an extended trial state. Indonesian coverage of its later rebrand noted that sportOne appeared to have been stalled for almost a decade, because its status was still that of trial broadcasts after many years, and its programmes were dominated by sports programmes that had previously aired on ANTV and tvOne. In other words, sportOne functioned for most of its life as a placeholder sports service inside the VIVA group: it kept a digital channel occupied, recycled the group's sports content, but never developed into the major standalone sports network projected in 2011.

Why the sports model was left behind

By the early 2020s the conditions that had shaped sportOne had changed. Indonesia's analogue switch-off, completed in the Jakarta area on 2 November 2022 and rolled out across the country into 2023, suddenly made digital terrestrial channels visible to every television household. At the same time, the economics of sports rights had shifted towards streaming platforms and the group's larger channels. A trial sports channel built largely on repeats had limited value in the new landscape, while a clearly targeted family channel could address an audience that VIVA's existing services did not serve: ANTV is a general entertainment network and tvOne is a news channel, leaving children and young families open.

Other Indonesian groups had reached the same conclusion. Surya Citra Media had officially launched its children's network Mentari TV on 2 November 2022, the day of the Jakarta switch-off. VIVA's answer, announced weeks later, was to convert its dormant sports asset rather than build a channel from nothing.

The rebrand to VTV

On 26 December 2022 Indonesian media reported that sportOne would change its name to VTV as it diversified its programming to also include non-sports programmes. The rebrand took effect at the start of the new year: VTV was officially launched on 9 January 2023. The sportOne name, in use from 2013 to 2023, was retired after almost ten years.

The new name shortened the group's own identity, VIVA, into a simple channel brand, and the network adopted the slogan Hiburan Keluarga Penuh Warna, meaning colourful family entertainment. That slogan states the repositioning plainly. VTV was no longer presented as a sports channel at all; it was relaunched as family entertainment, with children at the centre of its target audience.

Audience and programming direction

VTV's target market is young families, particularly children. Its programme direction follows from that target: children's animation and family entertainment in Indonesian form the core of the schedule described in the network's listings, replacing the sports repeats of the sportOne years. As a digital terrestrial network it competes for the same family audience as Mentari TV and the children's output of the generalist networks, but from inside a group whose other channels are aimed squarely at adults.

That portfolio fit is the channel's reason for existing. Within VIVA, a family can be offered news and discussion on tvOne, drama, reality and entertainment on ANTV, and children's and family programmes on VTV, while the group shares transmission infrastructure, advertising sales and management across the three. The rebrand therefore did not simply rename sportOne; it completed VIVA's channel architecture by adding the demographic its two established networks did not cover.

Ownership and management

VTV is owned by Visi Media Asia, the Bakrie Group's listed media company, and is held through Intermedia Capital, the listed company that also holds ANTV. The channel was founded by Visi Media Asia itself, rather than acquired from another broadcaster, which distinguishes it from many Indonesian networks with ownership histories involving several groups. Its recorded headquarters are at Atrium Mulia on Jalan H.R. Rasuna Said in Karet Kuningan, Setiabudi, South Jakarta, in the same Rasuna Said corridor as the offices of its sister channels. Its sister services are ANTV and tvOne, together with Jagantara TV, which has appeared as a channel test within the group.

Distribution and technical profile

VTV is a digital terrestrial network, a description that would have been a limitation in 2013 but is now simply how Indonesian free-to-air television works. The national list of television stations credits VTV with 34 transmitters, giving it a national footprint rather than a Jakarta-only service. It broadcasts in 1080i high definition, downscaled to a 16:9 standard-definition feed, in the Indonesian language. The VIVA group completed its nationwide analogue shutdown on 31 July 2023, six months after VTV's launch, by which point the channel existed only in the digital environment for which it had originally been created a decade earlier.

The network's official website is vtv.co.id, and the channel maintains the social media presence expected of a family brand within a large media group. Its distribution through the VIVA multiplexes means its coverage grew with the digital transmitter network rather than through the affiliate-building that older analogue networks such as ANTV undertook in the 1990s.

VTV's place in Indonesian television

VTV's story is unusual among Indonesian channels. Most networks that spent a decade in trial broadcasts would simply have disappeared. Instead, sportOne's long dormancy preserved a digital channel position, a licence history dating to 2013 and a place in the VIVA portfolio that could be reactivated when the market changed. The analogue switch-off supplied the audience, the children's and family segment supplied the format, and the rebrand of January 2023 supplied the identity.

Judged on its verified record, VTV should be understood as two channels in sequence: a sports project conceived in 2011 and tested from 2013 that never grew beyond trial status, and a children's and family network launched on 9 January 2023 that replaced it. Keeping that distinction clear also keeps the channel clear of confusion with other broadcasters using the VTV name abroad, above all Vietnam Television. Indonesia's VTV is a young family channel with an unexpectedly long prehistory, and that prehistory is the most distinctive fact about it.
