About Wealth Professional

Wealth Professional

Overview

Wealth Professional — Wealth Professional Canada, or WPC — is a Canadian business publication serving the country's financial advice and wealth management industry. It combines a daily news website, a free daily newsletter, a digital magazine and the Wealth Professional Awards, the sector's annual awards program. Its readers are financial advisors, planners, portfolio managers and the dealer firms, fund providers and service companies that work with them.

The title is published from Toronto by KM Business Information, the global B2B media company formerly known as Key Media, whose portfolio spans insurance, mortgage, legal, HR, education, safety and wealth titles in six countries. Wealth Professional describes itself as a free online information resource for Canadian advice and planning professionals, and its editorial mix runs from market and regulatory news to practice-management guidance on succession, technology and client relationships.

History

Wealth Professional began as a website. By 2013 the site had built enough of a following that its publisher, KMI Publishing and Events of Toronto, extended the brand into print: the launch of Wealth Professional magazine was announced for October 2013, with an exclusive interview with Sir Richard Branson as the cover feature and an interview with Andrew Marsh, president and CEO of Richardson GMP, inside. KMI's president and CEO Tim Duce said the magazine would be "the heartbeat of the community," and the launch plan included a Top 50 Elite Advisors feature in the January issue — the beginning of the title's rankings franchise — which associate publisher Trevor Biggs promoted as an opportunity for the nation's best advisors to "strut their stuff." The print magazine was free to industry professionals through subscription.

The brand's events business followed. The inaugural Wealth Professional Awards were held in June 2015 at the Liberty Grand in Toronto, drawing some 400 industry professionals and winners in 21 categories, with Invesco as title sponsor; Michael Lee-Chin, chairman of Mandeville Holdings, received a lifetime achievement honour. The awards became an annual fixture — the 2019 edition in Toronto named Equisoft Industry Service Provider of the Year, an honour it had also won in 2016 — and they adapted through the pandemic as a two-day virtual event in 2021, with more than 200 finalists across 23 categories, hosted by CBC anchor Suhana Merchant, when Emerge Canada's Lisa Langley was named CEO of the Year. The awards reached their tenth year in June 2024 — again at the Liberty Grand, with 23 categories — and the 2026 edition was held on June 4, 2026, in Toronto. The title also won recognition of its own, taking the silver prize for Best Trade Media Website at the Canadian Online Publishing Awards, with its sister publication Insurance Business Canada winning for branded content.

In the years since, the publisher has rebranded — Key Media became KM Business Information — and expanded the Canadian group, including the April 2023 acquisition of Powershift Communications, publisher of Benefits and Pensions Monitor. Wealth Professional's digital magazine continues to appear under volume numbering (issue 10.02 was current on the site in October 2026), and its "Best in Wealth" hub collects its awards and special reports.

Content and Coverage

The website publishes daily news across investments, equity markets, alternative investments, life and health insurance and industry appointments, alongside analysis of regulation and practice issues. Stories in mid-October 2026 included a US Supreme Court decision striking down core US tariff policy and its Canadian implications, the IMF's latest global growth scenarios, a $500 million RBC bond supporting Indigenous communities and businesses, Ontario Securities Commission investor-panel appointments, and Canadian housing-market coverage — the blend of market news and advisor-relevant development the title has long traded in.

Beyond the news file, Wealth Professional produces features and an "Advisor Intel" strand of practitioner-written guidance on selling a practice, succession planning and client retention, plus premium research content, webinars and sponsored features, which are labelled. Its signature editorial franchises are its rankings and awards: the Top 50 Elite Advisors list dates to the print launch era, and the Wealth Professional Awards now span individual and organizational categories across investment, financial planning, wealth technology and philanthropy — past winners include Croesus, which took the Readers' Choice Award for Service Provider of the Year in 2020, and Dynamic Funds, Fund Provider of the Year the same year. The 2026 winners included TD Wealth's Christy Bartram as Canadian Advisor of the Year and Global X's Chris McHaney as Fund Manager Innovator of the Year, while Guelph-based Skyline took the Excellence in Philanthropy and Community Service honour — Skyline's third consecutive year of recognition, after Real Estate Investment Provider of the Year and Employer of Choice wins in 2025. A free daily newsletter carries the site's coverage to subscribers, and the site has long maintained comment and forum areas intended, in its own description, to engage advisors in discussion of the issues that matter to them.

Audience and Reach

The audience is the Canadian advice channel: independent and bank-owned dealer advisors, financial planners, portfolio managers, and the fund companies, technology vendors and service providers that market to them. The publication's own About page says its newsletters reach more than 15,000 industry professionals each week — the publisher's own figure, presented as such. No independently audited circulation or traffic figure is published for the title, and none is claimed here; its scale is best evidenced by the longevity of its awards program, which has convened hundreds of industry professionals at its Toronto gala each year for a decade.

Digital Presence

Wealthprofessional.ca is the title's hub, publishing news daily with sections for news, premium content, features, resources and the magazine, and carrying the awards program's winners and methodology pages. The digital magazine is readable through the website. The title's content team works within KM Business Information's broader Canadian operation, whose other titles include Insurance Business Canada, Canadian Mortgage Professional, Canadian Lawyer and Canadian HR Reporter, and its journalists — among them long-serving writers Steve Randall and James Burton, the latter a former senior editor of the title who is now a KM vice-president of editorial — publish under individual author pages. The free daily newsletter is promoted across the site.

Ownership and Organisation

Wealth Professional is published by KM Business Information (formerly Key Media), a global B2B media company with offices in Sydney, Auckland, Denver, London, Manila and Toronto; its Canadian office is at 317 Adelaide Street West, Unit 910, Toronto. The company describes its portfolio as 28 market-leading publications across seven verticals and six countries; at the time of its 2023 Powershift acquisition it described the wider group as 340 staff working on around 25 websites, 14 magazine titles and 60 annual events. Wealth Professional was launched under KMI Publishing and Events, the group's earlier Canadian identity, when Tim Duce — later KM's North America and UK president — led the business; the title sits in the group's wealth vertical alongside the US title InvestmentNews, and its older releases named Life Health Professional as a sister publication.

Wealth Professional is based in Toronto, Ontario. Its website and daily newsletter are free to read, the digital magazine is available through wealthprofessional.ca, and the Wealth Professional Awards run an annual nominations and gala cycle each spring in Toronto.
