Weather Source
Weather Source is a weather data service that supplies hyper-local historical, current and forecast weather data to businesses and media. Its directory entry places it in Andover, Massachusetts, describes it as part of Pelmorex's weather data businesses, and names its essential promise: weather information resolved finely enough, and cleaned carefully enough, to be joined with a customer's own business data. Weather Source does not primarily sell a forecast to a person wondering whether to carry an umbrella. It sells data — past, present and forecast — to organisations that need to know what the weather was, is or will be at the exact locations where they sell, ship, advertise, generate power or insure risk.
The company is best known for its OnPoint product suite and OnPoint Platform. In its mature form within Pelmorex, it has been described as a prominent provider of high-resolution, analytics-grade weather and climate data, with parameters including real-time conditions, extreme events, seasonal anomalies, wildfires and air quality. That phrase, analytics-grade, is the key to its identity. A number that will be fed into a marketing model, a retail demand forecast or an energy trading system must be consistent across places and across decades in a way that a casual observation need not be. Weather Source built its business on making weather behave like reliable enterprise data.
Origins and the OnPoint idea
Weather Source's own releases have long said that since 2004 it has been providing comprehensive and accurate past, present and forecast weather data, drawing on science, data analytics and meteorological expertise to help companies reduce waste, increase return on investment, fine-tune logistics, optimise marketing and improve resource planning. Its LinkedIn history adds a later milestone: in 2015 it began development of the OnPoint Platform. Those two dates describe different things — a longer history of supplying weather data, and a platform-building phase from the middle of the following decade — and together they explain the modern company. The product histories agree on the founding purpose: to help clients leverage weather and climate technologies for business intelligence.
For many years the company operated as Weather Source, LLC, with an address at 1 Stiles Road, Suite 305, in Salem, New Hampshire, given in its product and company pages of that period. The batch listing for this profile records Andover, Massachusetts, reflecting the service's later Massachusetts association as part of Pelmorex. Mark Gibbas was identified as chief executive of Weather Source in its platform announcements of the late 2010s, and later appeared in Pelmorex announcements as managing director for B2B enterprise solutions, a transition consistent with Weather Source becoming Pelmorex's business-to-business data arm.
The OnPoint Platform and Grid
The OnPoint Platform is the technical centre of the service. Weather Source described it as managing the complexities of ingesting, cleansing and delivering weather and climate data for business intelligence. Its high-resolution OnPoint Grid was described as covering every land mass in the world and up to 200 miles offshore, with millions of grid points in total. At each grid point, the platform ingests weather sensing technologies including NOAA data, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, satellites, radar, the Internet of Things and airport observation stations, then unifies, homogenises and gap-fills the data so the result is a statistically consistent and globally uniform single source of weather and climate information.
Each verb in that description solves a practical problem. Ingesting matters because no single source observes everything everywhere. Cleansing matters because sensors fail, stations move and records contain errors. Homogenising matters because a business comparing this decade with the last needs to know that a change in the series reflects weather, not a change of instrument. Gap-filling matters because a customer's store, farm or asset sits at a latitude and longitude, not necessarily beside an official station. The grid is the device that turns a scattered observing system into a value for any point a customer names — by coordinate, ZIP or postal code, metropolitan area or media market, as earlier product descriptions put it.
Products: Weather, Climatology, Geospatial and Risk Analytics
The flagship OnPoint Weather product suite combines decades of historical data with current conditions and forward-looking forecasts for enterprise customers. Alongside it, the product pages list OnPoint Climatology, OnPoint Geospatial and OnPoint Risk Analytics. The climatology product addresses a different question from a forecast. Rather than predicting a specific day, it provides a quantified estimate of what weather to expect weeks or months forward, based on the historical behaviour of a location's climate — the kind of forward planning input a retailer, grower or logistics operator needs before a forecast for a particular date can responsibly exist.
Delivery is part of the product. Weather Source offered its data through a proprietary application programming interface and in spreadsheet-ready files, and made OnPoint Weather available through data platforms where enterprise customers already worked. A Google Cloud announcement described OnPoint Weather delivered through BigQuery under a commercial dataset programme, allowing users to process large numbers of requests quickly. Later, Weather Source emphasised delivery through Snowflake's secure data sharing, and in 2024 it was recognised as a leader in Snowflake's Modern Marketing Data Stack report, for the way it delivered actionable weather and climate information to marketing partners. The pattern is consistent: Weather Source goes to the data warehouse, rather than asking the analyst to come to a weather website.
Solutions built on the data
On top of the core data, Weather Source listed named solutions. The Dynamic Weather Alerting Service, or DWAS, addresses alerting. Condition-Based Ad Triggering, or C-BAT, connects weather conditions to advertising decisions, so campaigns can respond to the conditions their products are relevant to. Gaia Energy and Gaia Retail apply Pelmorex's newer modelling to particular sectors. Announcing Gaia Energy, Pelmorex described an artificial-intelligence-powered advanced weather model built for energy traders, using a deep-learning numerical weather prediction approach that, in the company's account, suppressed forecast error growth compared with conventional physics-based models and made forecasts available faster than the previous generation — a claim presented by Mark Gibbas in his B2B role. Such sector solutions show where raw data ends and a decision product begins.
The sectors Weather Source has named across its materials are broad: energy, retail, federal and state government, academic institutions, finance, manufacturing, data analytics, advertising, insurance, agriculture, travel, hospitality and logistics, with later descriptions adding entertainment, healthcare, real estate and transportation. Breadth is plausible for a data supplier because weather is a common input. The same snowfall record can explain a retail sales dip, justify a logistics delay, price an insurance exposure and target an advertisement for snow tyres. Weather Source's product is the common, cleaned version of that record.
The Pelmorex investment and acquisition
The decisive corporate event in Weather Source's history was its absorption into Pelmorex Corp., the Canadian weather company founded in 1989 that owns The Weather Network, MétéoMédia, Eltiempo.es, Clima and Otempo.pt, and operates Canada's National Alert Aggregation and Dissemination System as part of Alert Ready. On 17 December 2019, Pelmorex announced a majority investment in Weather Source, describing it as a leading provider of weather data products in the United States market dedicated to making hyper-local weather and climate data accessible globally and across industries. Pelmorex said partnering with Weather Source would expand its Weather Insights Platform for enterprise clients by integrating OnPoint weather and climatology data.
Pelmorex's own company timeline later recorded that in 2023 it acquired 100 percent of Weather Source. Since then the business has operated as Pelmorex Weather Source, the parent company's B2B division providing hyper-local weather and climate data and insights, while Pelmorex's consumer brands serve the public in Canada and internationally. Weather Source's site notices in this period told visitors it was moving and would continue to operate as Pelmorex Weather Source. Leadership announcements in 2025 discussed Pelmorex Weather Source as an established division within the group, alongside the group's wider work on artificial intelligence and data.
Why marketing became a showcase use
It is notable that a weather company's clearest industry award recognition in recent years came in marketing. The Snowflake Modern Marketing Data Stack recognition in 2024 concerned delivering weather information to marketing partners so campaigns could be optimised. That reflects a mature understanding of weather as a demand signal. Temperature and precipitation shape what people buy, where they go and what they need, often more predictably than they shape what a business can control. A retailer cannot change a cold snap, but it can change stock, staffing and advertising before the cold snap arrives, if the data reaches its planning systems in a usable form.
Weather Source's marketing materials framed the stakes with a striking figure used in its company descriptions: that weather accounts for very large annual losses in the United States economy. Whether a reader treats such figures as precise or illustrative, the commercial logic is the same. If weather moves revenue, then weather data belongs in the same analytical stack as sales, inventory and customer data — which is precisely where the OnPoint products, platform partnerships and data-sharing arrangements were designed to put it.
Strategic partners and distribution
Weather Source's published partner list illustrates its distribution strategy. It named data and platform partners including Google Cloud Platform, Snowflake, CARTO, Crux, Datarade, Dun and Bradstreet, S&P Global Market Intelligence and others, alongside data-marketplace and analytics channels. For a data business, such partnerships are not decoration. Each one places the OnPoint data inside a workflow a customer already uses — a cloud warehouse, a mapping tool, a financial terminal or a data marketplace — and reduces the friction of buying weather as an input rather than as a destination.
Earlier partnerships worked the same way from the supply side. An agreement to add WeatherBELL Analytics long-range forecast data extended and expanded OnPoint's forecast offering, with WeatherBELL's chief operating officer describing a well-rounded dataset accessible through the OnPoint API. Weather Source combined its own historical and current data strength with a specialist forecaster's long-range output, rather than building every component alone.
Place among weather data services
Weather Source sits in the business-to-business layer of the weather industry, between the public observing systems and forecast models on one side and commercial decision-making on the other. It did not become known for presenters, channels or storm coverage. It became known for a grid, a platform and a promise of consistency — that a business could ask what the weather was, is or will be at any point that matters to it, and receive an answer clean enough to join with its own records. Its passage from an independent New Hampshire company supplying data since the 2000s, through the OnPoint platform years, to majority investment by Pelmorex in 2019 and full acquisition in 2023, mirrors the wider industry: weather information increasingly travels as enterprise data, inside the systems where money is actually allocated.
