About Wenzhou Museum

Wenzhou Museum

Wenzhou Museum (温州博物馆, Wēnzhōu Bówùguǎn) is the comprehensive local museum of Wenzhou, a coastal city in Zhejiang Province, China. Run by the city and located on Shifu Road in Lucheng District, west of Century Square, it is a general museum whose permanent displays cover the history, painting and calligraphy, ceramics, natural history and crafts of the Wenzhou region, together with a dedicated Wang Weixin Copperplate Exhibition Room and temporary exhibitions. In 2017 it was included, in the third batch, in China's list of national first-grade museums. Its core display, the remodelled History Hall, presents some 5,000 years of local history under the theme of the Wenzhou people as a story of survival and development — from the ancient Dong'ou kingdom, through the city's centuries as a trading port, to the merchant diaspora for which Wenzhou people later became famous.

Founding on Jiangxin Islet in 1958

Wenzhou Museum was established in May 1958 at Xingqing Temple on Jiangxin Islet, the island in the Ou River in the heart of the city. Its first director was Fang Jiekan, and it was Wenzhou's first general museum. The starting point matters: before 1958 the city had no institution of this kind charged with collecting, preserving and displaying the material evidence of its own past, even though the region's history, as the museum now tells it, reaches back some 5,000 years and includes the Dong'ou kingdom, whose King Zouyao established governance in the area roughly 2,200 years ago.

The choice of Jiangxin Islet placed the young museum in one of Wenzhou's most historic settings, in a temple building rather than a purpose-built home. That original site served the museum for more than four decades. Accounts of the museum consistently describe the Jiangxin period as its first era, before the growth of its collections and audiences made a much larger, modern building necessary. The museum is still described in later sources as having been founded in 1958 at Jiangxin Islet, and that origin remains the first fact of its institutional history.

Closure in the Cultural Revolution and re-establishment in 1981

The museum's early history was interrupted during the Cultural Revolution. In that period the museum was closed and incorporated into Wenzhou Library. The closure broke the continuity of the institution founded in 1958: it ceased to operate as an independent museum, and its functions were absorbed into the library.

In 1981 the museum was established again as Wenzhou Museum. The re-establishment restored it as a separate institution and began the period in which it rebuilt its work ahead of its eventual move to a new home. The sequence — founding in 1958, closure and merger into the library, then re-establishment in 1981 — is the documented spine of the museum's history, and it explains why its modern development dates effectively from the early 1980s rather than from an unbroken run since the 1950s. From its Jiangxin Islet base, the restored museum continued for a further two decades before the decision to build a new museum in the city centre was realised.

The new building on Shifu Road

In early October 2003 Wenzhou Museum opened a new location, on the west side of what sources render as Shiji Plaza or Century Square, on a trial basis. After about a month it closed again so that it could be improved, and it then officially opened on 12 January 2004. Entry became free in March 2008.

The scale of the move was substantial. The new site occupies an area of about 2.34 hectares. The building's floor area is about 26,000 square metres, with an exhibition area of about 12,000 square metres — figures also given in the museum's own introductory material as reproduced in later reports. Against that space the museum organises its permanent galleries: history, painting and calligraphy, ceramics, nature and crafts, the Wang Weixin copperplate room, and temporary exhibitions. Visitor information recorded for the museum gives its address as 491 Shifu Road, Lucheng District, with opening from 09:00 to 17:00, Tuesday to Sunday, last entry at 16:00, and free admission — arrangements consistent with the free-entry policy introduced in 2008.

Architecture inspired by the Yandang Mountains

The architectural design of the new museum was inspired by the Yandang Mountains, the celebrated range in the Wenzhou region known for its distinctive peaks. Descriptions of the building describe a closed, single-body form whose massing pursues a vigorous and simple artistic effect drawn from those peaks and green mountains — an attempt to give a modern city-centre museum a silhouette rooted in the local landscape rather than a generic institutional block.

Inside, the entrance is decorated with banyan tree sculptures, said in museum descriptions to evoke the diligence and indomitable spirit of the Wenzhou people. The entrance leads to a central circular hall more than ten metres high. On the granite walls of the lobby hang nine copper relief sculptures depicting Chinese myths: Pangu separating heaven and earth, Nüwa mending the sky, Kuafu chasing the sun, Jingwei filling the sea, Hou Yi shooting at the suns, Chang'e flying to the moon, Shennong and Fuxi, Suiren making fire, and Yu the Great taming the floods. Together the nine reliefs present a compressed account of the origins of Chinese civilisation before the visitor reaches the specifically Wenzhou story told in the History Hall.

A collection of more than 30,000 artefacts in 20 categories

The museum holds a collection of more than 30,000 artefacts in 20 categories. The categories named in its introductory material include bronzeware, pottery and ceramics, painted sculpture, lacquerware, brick carving, and painting and calligraphy. Some later summaries put the total higher, at more than 40,000 pieces, reflecting the collection's continued growth; the figure of more than 30,000 in 20 categories is the one given in the museum's own description as cited in reference works.

The museum states that its most distinctive holdings are pottery, painted sculptures, paintings and calligraphy, and other descriptions single out ceramics, coloured sculpture and calligraphy and painting as its particular strengths. That emphasis is local as well as artistic. Wenzhou and southern Zhejiang have a long ceramic tradition, a notable body of religious sculpture, and a strong literati culture, and the collection was built to represent all three. Among the individual objects illustrated from the collection are a fossil crab from the Mesozoic era, a bronze mirror with a coiled-dragon design from the Warring States period, a celadon chamber pot from the Western Jin dynasty, a celadon sheep of the Ou kiln from the Eastern Jin dynasty, a Southern Song one-tael gold leaf, a fragment of the Amitayurdhyana Sutra printed with movable type, and a Qing dynasty wood carving of the Three Star Gods by Zhu Zichang.

Celadon, Ou kiln and the ceramics strength

Ceramics are the collection's best-known strength. Museum descriptions list among its principal treasures a Northern Song celadon unearthed at Xishan, and the gallery of illustrated pieces includes celadon from the Western Jin and Eastern Jin dynasties and a Southern Song inscription from the tomb of Ye Shi in Longquan celadon. The ceramics gallery gives this material a permanent home of its own alongside the History Hall.

The local context is the Ou kiln, described in studies of the subject as a famous celadon kiln that was born, thrived and declined in Wenzhou. Porcelain of the Ou kiln was first fired in the Eastern Han dynasty, its technology reached its peak in the Tang and Five Dynasties, and it later declined from the Southern Song to the Yuan as the Longquan and Jingdezhen kilns rose. About 150 Ou kiln sites have been identified in the Wenzhou area, distributed across Yongjia, Ruian, Yueqing, Wencheng, Lucheng, Ouhai and other places, with Yongjia an important centre. The museum's Eastern Jin Ou kiln celadon sheep is a direct example of that tradition in its own collection, connecting the ceramics gallery to kiln sites across the modern city.

Painted sculpture and the White Elephant Pagoda

Painted, or coloured, sculpture is the second signature strength. Museum descriptions name among its principal treasures the coloured sculptures of the Northern Song dynasty unearthed in the White Elephant Pagoda — the Baixiang Pagoda — in Wenzhou, and accounts of the collection explain why they matter nationally: this group fills a gap in the surviving record of early Chinese coloured sculpture, in which Tang dynasty examples are very few.

The pagoda itself had become severely tilted and cracked. In the 1960s it could not be reinforced or repaired and had to be dismantled; the museum's Craft Hall takes “The Story of the White Elephant Pagoda” as its theme, and one account dates the dismantling to 1965. Relics were recovered from the floors of the tower, including copper coins, brick carvings, inscriptions, porcelain and Buddha statues, of which the Northern Song painted clay sculptures were judged the most precious. Other named treasures from the wider collection underline the pagoda finds' company: an Eastern Jin land-purchase certificate for Xue, wife of Zhu, unearthed at Yishan, and Tang dynasty scriptures unearthed at the Jinsha Pagoda.

The History Hall: the Wenzhou people

The History Hall is the museum's core display. It was remodelled starting in 2015, reopened on a trial basis on 21 January 2017, and officially opened on International Museum Day, 18 May 2017. Descriptions of the hall give its area as about 2,100 square metres and its theme as “The Wenzhou People: a story of survival and development,” tracing the 5,000-year historical footprint of the Wenzhou people.

Reports of the remodelled hall divide that narrative into five stages. “Living Amidst Oceans” covers prehistory through the Qin and Han periods. “A Major Port City” covers the Six Dynasties through the Tang and Song. “Thriving Maritime Trade” covers the Song and Yuan trading boom. “Economic Changes During the Ming-Qing Periods” documents social and economic transformation in the Ming and Qing. Finally, “Dare To Be First” turns to the modern period and the pioneering spirit of contemporary Wenzhou people. Visitors' accounts of the hall note Neolithic stone artefacts unearthed locally, material on figures associated with Wenzhou such as Wang Xizhi and Xie Lingyun, a restored bowl-kiln model, and the stories of Wenzhou merchants venturing across the seas — the treaty-port and diaspora end of a story that begins with Dong'ou.

Painting and calligraphy, nature, crafts and the Wang Weixin room

Around the History Hall, the museum's permanent offer is organised as a group of specialist galleries. The painting and calligraphy gallery reflects one of the collection's stated specialisms. The ceramics gallery presents the pottery and celadon holdings described above. The nature gallery covers the natural side of the region — the illustrated Mesozoic fossil crab belongs to that side of the collection — and the crafts gallery presents Wenzhou handicrafts, with the White Elephant Pagoda story as the Craft Hall theme recorded in visitor guides.

The Wang Weixin Copperplate Exhibition Room is a named, permanent part of the new building's layout, listed in the museum's own description alongside history, painting and calligraphy, ceramics, nature and crafts. Temporary exhibitions complete the programme, so that the museum functions both as the permanent record of Wenzhou's past and as a changing exhibition venue. Travel and visitor accounts consistently single out the same three anchors for a visit — the history exhibition, the crafts exhibition and the nature exhibition — within this larger gallery structure.

National first-class status, the archaeology merger and the museum today

The museum's standing rose in stages. In 2004 it was named a provincial-level patriotic education base, and in May 2009 it was rated a national second-level museum. In 2017 it was appraised by the China Museums Association and included in the third batch of national first-grade — first-class — museums of China, the highest grade in the national system. The timing was fitting: the promotion was announced in the same year, on 18 May 2017 in visitor-guide accounts, that its remodelled History Hall officially opened.

In 2020 the Wenzhou Institute of Archaeology — also rendered as the Wenzhou Archaeological Institute, incorporating the Dong'ou Cultural Research and Protection Center — was merged into the museum, which thereafter operated under the unified name of Wenzhou Museum. The merger brought archaeological research and protection work inside the museum itself, a natural fit for an institution whose History Hall begins with excavated material and whose collections include finds from pagodas, tombs and kiln sites across the region. Within the city, the museum also acts as the leading institution of Wenzhou's museum sector: its deputy director Gao Qixin has described how, as a first-class museum, it has established help and co-construction agreements with more than ten other museums in the city. From Xingqing Temple in 1958 to Shifu Road today, Wenzhou Museum remains what it was founded to be — Wenzhou's first and principal general museum, now holding the archaeological, ceramic, sculptural and documentary record of the Wenzhou people in a single city-centre building.
