About Westcoast German News

Westcoast German News

Overview

Westcoast German News is an independent online news publication based in Vancouver, British Columbia, serving the German-speaking communities of Western Canada. It covers the news, people, events and businesses of the German, Austrian and Swiss communities across the region, publishing stories that range from opera premieres and film festivals to chamber-of-commerce business news, community celebrations and soccer. The publication is written, edited and published by its founder, Elke Porter, and it operates as a small independent outlet supported by advertising, a business directory and reader support rather than by a large media company.

The site's own welcome message sums up its mission: for 20 years, Westcoast German News says, it has been "bringing you stories, people, events and connections that celebrate the German-speaking community across Western Canada." Its coverage area is centred on Metro Vancouver but extends across British Columbia and the other western provinces, and the University of Alberta's Canadian Minority Media Database notes that it has sometimes covered German-speaking community news in the western United States as well. Publishing is frequent and current: in October 2026 the homepage carried new posts on German films at the Vancouver International Film Festival, a Vancouver Playhouse dance production, the Vancouver Christmas Market, Hannover Messe business travel, and the Vancouver Whitecaps, demonstrating an outlet that is actively publishing today.

History

The origins of Westcoast German News are documented in the Canadian Minority Media Database maintained by the University of Alberta. According to that record, when Vancouver's earlier German-language newspapers, the Kanada Kurier and the Pazifische Rundschau, closed down, Elke Porter saw an opportunity to start a German-related publication of her own. In 1997 she launched a newsletter called "German Voices Vancouver," and after about a year she renamed it Westcoast German News, reflecting an ambition to serve the whole west coast of North America rather than one city. The database lists Porter as founder and owner, gives the head office location as Kitsilano, Vancouver, and records the publication's run as beginning in 1997 and continuing to the present.

The modern, web-based incarnation of the publication dates from the following decade. In her own published biography, Porter dates her blogging and the Westcoast International German News blog to 2007, and a 2025 release from WBN News likewise described her as publisher of Westcoast German News since 2007. Alongside the website she has produced print and newsletter publications for the community, including editing the Swiss Herald newsletter for the Swiss Society and publishing German-Canadian magazines such as Das Schwarze Brett, a cover of which, dated December 2018, appears in her portfolio. She is also the author of the two-part book series "75 German-Speaking Influential People in Western Canada."

In 2025 and 2026 the publication set out an editorial programme built, in Porter's Fall 2026 letter to readers, around five pillars for the Austrian, German and Swiss community in Western Canada: promoting soccer, promoting the arts, promoting events, promoting business, and promoting international collaboration. Soccer coverage expanded sharply around the FIFA World Cup year, with Westcoast German News following the Vancouver Whitecaps, German star Thomas Müller's time in Vancouver, and the city's role as a 2026 host city. The same letter noted a transition year in which her networking venture WINK was wound down and she took on a part-time role with the Swiss Canadian Chamber of Commerce, while the news site itself continued publishing.

Programming and Content

Westcoast German News publishes a community-journalism mix rather than wire-service news. Arts and culture form a major strand: previews and interviews cover Vancouver Opera and City Opera Vancouver productions, ballet, the Eastside Culture Crawl, and an annual curated guide to German films screening at the Vancouver International Film Festival, a beat Porter returns to each autumn. A 2026 interview with Swiss-Canadian crime novelist Bernadette Calonego about her book Deep Death is typical of the site's interview-led features.

Events coverage is the publication's second backbone. It previews and reports on the fixtures of German-speaking community life in Metro Vancouver — the Vancouver Christmas Market, the Vancouver Alpen Club, the German Canadian Benevolent Society's anniversary celebrations, German heritage plazas, church and school events, and seasonal occasions from Oktoberfest to Nikolaus. Business content forms a third strand, reflecting Porter's background in the German-Canadian business community: stories promote trade links such as the Hannover Messe fair in Germany, chamber of commerce activities, and local German-speaking businesses, which can also list themselves in the site's business directory or advertise. A fourth strand is soccer, from the Whitecaps and Bayern Munich to FIFA 2026 explainers aimed at local fans. Posts are written largely in English with German expressions and community vocabulary woven through them, pitched at both German speakers and the wider public interested in German-speaking culture.

Audience and Reach

The publication's stated audience is the German, Austrian and Swiss communities across Western Canada — immigrants, their Canadian-born descendants, expatriates on work assignments, students and businesses that trade with the German-speaking world. It is a niche community audience rather than a mass one, and Westcoast German News publishes no audited readership figures; no circulation or traffic numbers are claimed here because none have been independently verified. What can be said from the record is that the outlet has sustained continuous publication for roughly two decades in its current online form, maintains an email newsletter list, and is treated as a reference point for the community: the University of Alberta's minority-media database catalogues it, community organisations such as the German Canadian Benevolent Society and the Vancouver Christmas Market work with it on coverage, and political and consular figures appear in its event reporting.

Porter positions the site to businesses as a direct line to that niche audience, offering tailored promotions, advertising and directory listings. In a January 2025 article she argued that independent outlets like hers preserve cultural identity and give smaller communities a voice that mainstream media overlook, while also noting the pressures on Canadian niche publishers, including the federal Online News Act and small-market economics.

Digital Presence

The publication's home is its website at westcoastgermannews.com, which today resolves to the WordPress site also reachable at westcoastgermanmedia.com, where "Westcoast German Media" is the umbrella name for Porter's media work. The site carries the latest posts, an "About Elke Porter" page, advertising and directory information, and newsletter sign-up. Its email newsletter, sent through Mailchimp, delivers seasonal roundups — the "Fall Highlights in 2026" edition combined an editor's letter, a giveaway of film-festival tickets and a guide to German films at VIFF. Porter also contributes to WBN News (wbn.digital), a digital business-news platform where she has written on German-Canadian topics and contributed to its Vancouver, Kitsilano and Sea to Sky editions, and she maintains a professional presence on LinkedIn and other social platforms where story links and community notices are shared.

Ownership and Organisation

Westcoast German News is independently owned and operated by its founder, editor and publisher, Elke Porter — the University of Alberta database lists her as both founder/author and owner. It is essentially a one-person newsroom: Porter reports, writes, photographs, edits and publishes the site herself, a model she describes as independent media reliant on reader and advertiser support. Her long involvement in the community's institutions underpins the publication's access and sourcing: she served ten years as secretary of the German Canadian Business Association, taught at the Vancouver Westside German School, handled communications for the European Festival and the German Canadian Heritage Plaza, founded the Westcoast International Business Club networking group (later WINK), and since August 2025 has worked part-time as Marketing and Administrative Coordinator for the Swiss Canadian Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) West, a role she holds alongside the news site.

Contact and Availability

Westcoast German News is available free online at westcoastgermannews.com, with new stories posted throughout the week and a free email newsletter for subscribers. Readers, community groups and businesses can reach the publication through the contact and advertising pages on its website, including options to place an advertisement or add a business to its German-speaking community directory. Porter publishes her contact email as elke@westcoastgermanmedia.com and, on her WBN bylines, a WhatsApp contact number of +1 604 828 8788 for story ideas, books, articles and public-relations work. The publication is based in Kitsilano, Vancouver, British Columbia, and covers events across Metro Vancouver and Western Canada.
