WFAE 90.7 FM is Charlotte's flagship public radio station — an NPR member outlet and one of the country's leading pubcasters, broadcasting news and talk to the Charlotte region since 1977.
WFAE (90.7 MHz) is a non-commercial public radio station licensed to Charlotte, North Carolina. Its call letters stand for "fine arts and education." It first went on the air on April 18, 1977, succeeding a student-run carrier-current station at UNC Charlotte that had operated from the mid-1970s — initially on 90.9 FM, moving to 90.7 in 1987. When UNC Charlotte ended its support during a budget crunch, control passed in 1994 to a nonprofit community board, the University Radio Foundation, Inc., which owns and operates the station today.
WFAE broadcasts NPR news and talk programming — Morning Edition, All Things Considered — plus the BBC World Service and PRX, alongside local journalism and its signature weekday talk show Charlotte Talks, hosted by radio veteran Mike Collins. It reaches more than 200,000 listeners a week, with additional frequencies in Hickory (90.3 FM), Laurinburg (106.1 FM), and Southern Pines (93.7 FM). In 2022 its content staff became the first public-radio workforce in the Carolinas to unionize, signing a first contract with SAG-AFTRA in 2023.
The station's studios are at 8801 JM Keynes Drive in Charlotte, and its digital home is wfae.org.
