About Whiteside Sentinel

Whiteside Sentinel

The Whiteside Sentinel is the historic newspaper of Morrison, the county seat of Whiteside County, Illinois. Founded in the nineteenth century as the Whiteside Sentinel — the name under which it published the county's landmark 1877 history — it is known in its modern form as the Whiteside News Sentinel, or Whiteside News-Sentinel, a weekly published on Tuesdays by B. F. Shaw Printing for Shaw Media from 100 East Main Street in Morrison. The batch listing name "Whiteside Sentinel" reflects the paper's long-standing short title; directory and masthead usage today adds "News," as in Whiteside News Sentinel, the name under which its Shaw Local site and its current legal certificates appear. A February 2026 certificate of publication described it as a secular weekly public newspaper published in the City of Morrison, Whiteside County, and of general circulation in the city, county and state.

The Sentinel as publisher of the 1877 county history

The Sentinel's name is fixed in Whiteside County historiography because the paper published the county's foundational history. Charles Bent's History of Whiteside County, Illinois, from its first settlement to the present time, with numerous biographical and family sketches, was published at Morrison by the Whiteside Sentinel in 1877, and modern county histories still cite it by that imprint. That a county newspaper acted as book publisher was normal for the period — the newspaper office was usually the county seat's only substantial printing plant — but the 1877 volume gave the Sentinel a permanence few weeklies achieve: its name sits on the title page of the source from which much of Whiteside County's early history is still drawn.

Correspondents and the "Hans" letters

The Sentinel's nineteenth-century pages carried the work of local correspondents whose writing outlived the newsprint. One Morrison figure, Mr. Odell — the first town clerk of Fenton Township and longtime treasurer of Mount Pleasant Township — was for some time a correspondent of the Whiteside Sentinel, writing under the pen name "Tim Downes," as Bent's 1877 history itself recorded. A later correspondent's work was collected as a book: The Whiteside Sentinel, Morrison, Illinois — newspaper epistles written by "Hans," Robert McCay Kennedy, from March 30, 1882, to October 20, 1909, edited and published by Jayne Kennedy Sweger in 1991. The 87-page volume, preserved by the FamilySearch library and also available on microfilm and microfiche, gathers twenty-seven years of one writer's letters to the Sentinel, together with obituaries and family material — evidence that the paper's correspondence columns were a recognised literary feature of county life.

The Sentinel in the twentieth century

Genealogy researchers quoting Whiteside sources trace the Sentinel across the decades: an item dated February 11, 1892, is cited from the Whiteside Sentinel; obituary material from March 1945 is credited to its pages; and a July 7, 1966, obituary is sourced to the paper. By 1930 the paper was appearing more often than weekly — obituary transcriptions cite the Whiteside Sentinel as a tri-weekly at Morrison in April 1930, and court reporting from March 1936 is credited to the Whiteside Sentinel Triweekly, showing the paper covering a Morrison inquest in detail, witness by witness. By December 1974, quoted material appears under the name The Whiteside News Sentinel, the form the title carries today: the older Sentinel had become the News Sentinel, in the common pattern by which a "news" title and a "sentinel" title, or a renaming, merged into a compound name.

The modern News Sentinel

Today's Whiteside News Sentinel is a Tuesday weekly in Shaw Media's Sauk Valley group. Shaw's publications lists group it with the Prophetstown Echo and the Erie Review, each published on Tuesdays. Its office is at 100 East Main Street, Morrison, Illinois 61270, with post office box 31 in Morrison; advertising directories list its telephone as (815) 772-7244 and give its parent, in older listings, as WNS Publications. A February 2026 certificate filed with the Illinois Pollution Control Board, signed for publisher B. F. Shaw Printing, certified the News Sentinel as a secular weekly public newspaper of general circulation in Morrison, Whiteside County and Illinois, and recorded a public notice published in its issue of February 17, 2026 — the paper still performing the legal-notice function it has carried since the nineteenth century.

Circulation and market

An advertising directory published by Gaebler described the Whiteside News Sentinel as one of the larger weekly newspapers in the Davenport–Rock Island–Moline area, with a weekly circulation of approximately 3,000, and estimated its advertising rate at nine dollars per column inch; a media database likewise gives its circulation as 3,000, with local coverage of Morrison and Mount Pleasant Township. Three thousand copies is a substantial circulation for a county-seat weekly, reflecting the News Sentinel's position as the paper of record not only for Morrison but, through Shaw's group administration, for the Whiteside weeklies' shared operations as well.

The Morrison hub of the Whiteside weeklies

Morrison is the administrative centre of Shaw's Whiteside County cluster. When the Prophetstown Echo printed its masthead in April 2023, it directed readers to send address changes to the Whiteside News Sentinel, P.O. Box 31, Morrison, Illinois 61270, and Echo subscriptions were handled through the Morrison operation. The Whiteside News Sentinel thus serves as the business address for its sister weeklies as well as for itself — a consolidation of back-office functions in the county seat, while each paper keeps its own name, day and community.

Digital presence and archives

The Illinois Press Association's directory lists the Whiteside News Sentinel as a non-daily paper in Morrison with its website at Shaw Local — shawlocal.com/whitesidenewssentinel — where its news appears within Shaw Media's northern Illinois platform, launched in December 2020. An older standalone address, whitesidesentinel.com, appears in business listings. For researchers, Newspapers.com maintains a Whiteside News-Sentinel archive of 6,134 searchable pages covering 2020 to 2025, and funeral-home obituaries for Morrison-area residents are routinely published under the Whiteside News Sentinel's name, continuing in digital form the obituary record that genealogists have mined from its print pages since the 1890s.

Morrison and the county seat role

Morrison was laid out in 1855 in Mount Pleasant Township, near the geographical centre of Whiteside County, when the railroad line was routed through the site, and it became the county seat. A newspaper there covered county government, the courts and the agricultural townships around it, and the Sentinel grew with that role — publishing the county history in 1877, printing correspondents' letters from across the county for decades, and expanding to tri-weekly publication by the 1930s. Its survival in weekly form, while most of the county's nineteenth-century papers in Sterling, Fulton and Rock Falls have consolidated or vanished into regional titles, keeps a Morrison-published paper at the centre of county record.

The Shaw connection

The News Sentinel's publisher, B. F. Shaw Printing, carries the name of Benjamin Flower Shaw, founder of the Dixon Telegraph in 1851, from which Shaw Media descends. Shaw Media, owned by the Mabel S. Shaw Family Trust and headquartered in Crystal Lake, publishes roughly eighty newspapers and websites in Illinois and Iowa and describes itself as the third oldest continuously owned and operated family newspaper company in the United States. The Whiteside papers sit within its Sauk Valley operation, based in Dixon — B. F. Shaw's own town — so the Sentinel's modern publisher connects it, by name and by group, to the oldest newspaper lineage in its region.

Why the Sentinel matters

Few American weeklies can point to a book on the county's history bearing their imprint from 1877, a bound volume of their correspondence columns spanning 1882 to 1909, and a current certificate, filed in 2026, attesting that they still publish weekly at the county seat. The Whiteside Sentinel — today's Whiteside News Sentinel — links all three. It remains Morrison's newspaper of record: printed on Tuesdays, circulated at about 3,000 copies, publishing the legal notices, obituaries and county news of Whiteside County, and administering the small group of Shaw weeklies that serve the county's other communities.
