About WION

Overview

WION, short for World Is One News, is an English-language international news television channel headquartered in Noida, India. Launched on 15 August 2016, India's Independence Day, it is owned by Zee Media Corporation Limited, part of Subhash Chandra's Essel Group. WION was conceived as India's first privately owned global news channel, reporting world news from a South Asian perspective as an alternative to Western-dominated outlets such as CNN, BBC World News and Al Jazeera English. The channel broadcasts worldwide, claiming availability in more than 190 countries, and operates on a digital-first model with a large online and social media presence. Its official website is wionews.com.

History and Launch

WION's website and digital streams went live on 15 June 2016 as a free-to-air satellite service, and the television channel began full broadcasting on 15 August 2016, deliberately chosen to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Indian independence. Zee Media chairman Subhash Chandra had long argued that the world needed to see South Asia through local eyes rather than Western filters, and he appointed former CNN journalist Rohit Gandhi as the founding editor-in-chief in August 2015 to build the channel. The channel received its broadcasting licence from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in February 2016. At launch it was carried on Dish TV, Tata Play, Reliance Digital TV and cable networks in India, and on satellite platforms across 37 countries. The launch was positioned as a landmark moment for Indian media's global ambitions.

Ownership and the Zee Media Network

WION is owned by Zee Media Corporation Limited (ZMCL), the news broadcasting arm of the Essel Group, whose promoter is Subhash Chandra and family. Zee Media also operates Zee News (Hindi), Zee Business, Zee 24 Taas, Zee 24 Ghanta, Zee Bihar Jharkhand, Zee Rajasthan, Zee Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh, Zee Uttar Pradesh Uttarakhand, Zee Punjab Haryana Himachal, Zee Salaam and other regional news channels. The channel is headquartered in Noida, in the National Capital Region. The Essel Group's financial difficulties in the late 2010s, including large pledged-share exposures, raised questions about the group's media investments, but WION continued to operate and expand. The channel's global positioning distinguishes it within the Zee bouquet, which is otherwise focused on domestic Indian audiences.

Leadership and Editorial Team

Rohit Gandhi, a veteran of CNN and Times Now, was hired in August 2015 as the founder and first editor-in-chief and built the channel's initial newsroom and international bureau structure. After Gandhi's departure, Sudhir Chaudhary, formerly of Zee News, served as editor-in-chief until he left in 2021. The channel's most prominent face was Palki Sharma Upadhyay, whose nightly show Gravitas became WION's signature programme and attracted a large global audience before her resignation in September 2022; she subsequently joined Network18. The founding team also included international journalists such as former CBS correspondent Mandy Clark. The channel has bureaus and correspondents in major world capitals including Washington, London, Moscow, Beijing and Jerusalem, an unusual footprint for an Indian news channel.

Gravitas and Flagship Programming

Gravitas, hosted by Palki Sharma Upadhyay from 2019 to 2022, was WION's defining show: a fast-paced, visually rich nightly programme covering global news with sharp commentary, which built a large following on YouTube and among the Indian diaspora. After her departure the channel continued the Gravitas brand with new anchors. Other key shows include WION Wideangle, a weekly in-depth programme, The Diplomacy Show, covering foreign affairs, and World at War and related strands covering conflicts. Daytime programming carries rolling international news with an emphasis on stories affecting South Asia. The channel's presentation style, with cinematic graphics and a brisk pace, was designed to appeal to younger, digitally native viewers accustomed to global media aesthetics.

Global Reach and Distribution

WION's defining claim is its worldwide footprint: as of 2021 the channel reported presence in more than 190 countries through satellite, cable and digital distribution. It is carried on platforms including Sky UK and Freeview in the United Kingdom, Etisalat in the United Arab Emirates, and various operators across Africa, Southeast Asia and North America. In India it streams on ZEE5, Airtel Xstream and its own digital platforms. The international distribution strategy targets the large Indian diaspora as well as general audiences interested in an alternative perspective on world affairs. Few Indian channels have attempted such an ambitious global rollout, and WION's carriage deals represent a significant investment in international visibility.

Editorial Perspective: News from a South Asian Lens

WION's stated mission is to cover global news and current affairs from an Indian and South Asian perspective, challenging what it describes as the Western-centric framing of international outlets. In practice this has meant extensive coverage of China's assertiveness, Pakistan, the Russia-Ukraine war, West Asian conflicts and the strategic affairs of the Indo-Pacific, often with a nationalist Indian viewpoint. The channel has been strongly supportive of the Indian government's foreign policy positions. Media analysts have noted that while the channel provides genuinely useful international coverage for Indian audiences, its perspective is closer to state-aligned commentary than to independent global journalism. The channel describes its approach as "global news neutrality," a claim its critics dispute. WION also produces documentary specials and explainer series on geopolitics, and its correspondents have reported from conflict zones and major international summits, giving Indian audiences firsthand coverage of events that domestic channels typically source from wire agencies.

Digital-First Strategy

WION was designed from the outset as a digital-first, multi-platform network rather than a traditional television channel with a website attached. Its YouTube channel became one of the most-subscribed Indian news channels, with Gravitas clips routinely drawing millions of views from audiences in India, the United States, the Gulf and Southeast Asia. The website wionews.com publishes text, video and live blogs around the clock. The channel is active on X, Facebook, Instagram and Telegram, and its content is optimised for mobile consumption. This digital emphasis allowed WION to build a global audience far larger than its linear television ratings in India, and it remains the primary driver of the brand's influence.

Controversies and Scrutiny

WION has faced significant controversy. In 2022 its YouTube channel was temporarily blocked after it broadcast a speech by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, an episode the channel attributed to platform overreach. The channel has faced scrutiny from foreign governments, including China and Canada, over its coverage. Its former Pakistan bureau chief was forced into exile after a reported kidnapping attempt in Islamabad. The channel has been accused by fact-checkers of promoting misinformation, including around COVID-19. In 2021 the appointment of M.J. Akbar, the former minister accused of sexual harassment by multiple women during the MeToo movement, as an editorial consultant drew protests from more than 150 journalists. These episodes have complicated the channel's claim to global journalistic credibility.

Market Position and Significance

Within India, WION's linear television ratings are modest compared to domestic-focused English news channels, but its significance lies in its international and digital reach rather than domestic ratings. It remains the only Indian-owned English news channel with a genuinely global distribution footprint, and it has demonstrated that there is an audience, particularly among the diaspora, for India-centric world news. Whether it can achieve the editorial independence and financial sustainability to rival established global players remains an open question. As geopolitical interest in India grows, WION is positioned to benefit, but its close alignment with the Indian government's worldview limits its appeal to audiences seeking genuinely pluralistic international news.
