About WNYO-TV

WNYO-TV — MyTV Buffalo, Channel 49

WNYO-TV, channel 49, is a television station in Buffalo, New York, programmed primarily as an independent station with MyNetworkTV programming, and branded as MyTV Buffalo. It is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group through New York Television, Inc., alongside Fox affiliate WUTV (channel 29), with which it shares studios on Hertel Avenue near Military Road in Buffalo. Its call letters stand for Western New York and Ontario, a nod to the cross-border audience Buffalo stations serve. Channel 49 has had one of the most travelled histories in the market: launched in 1987 as WNYB-TV, it was at different times an independent, the market's Fox affiliate, a religious station, a WB affiliate and, since September 5, 2006, the home of MyNetworkTV. Since March 22, 2021, it has also served a technical role for the whole market as Buffalo's ATSC 3.0 NextGen TV lighthouse station.

Launch as WNYB-TV in 1987

The channel 49 allocation was founded on February 15, 1984, and the station first aired on September 1, 1987, as WNYB-TV, built by the TVX Broadcast Group. It was Buffalo's second modern independent station, entering a market long served by WUTV on channel 29. TVX soon sold the station to a group headed by Seymour Knox and Robert Swados, the owners of the Buffalo Sabres hockey franchise. The Sabres connection gave channel 49 local sports ties, but the station struggled: much of its planned programming could not be broadcast as intended, its schedule leaned heavily on successes such as Star Trek: The Next Generation, and the operation lost money. The young station needed a network identity, and one was about to become available across town.

The Fox Year and the 1990 Unravelling

In 1989, Fox — dissatisfied with the performance of its charter Buffalo affiliate WUTV, whose management in turn blamed Fox's weak Saturday nights — signed an agreement to move its affiliation to WNYB-TV, and channel 49 became Buffalo's Fox affiliate for the 1989–90 period. The victory was short-lived. WNYB lacked WUTV's valuable Canadian cable carriage, and its Sabres-linked ownership was losing money on the station. Norman Lear's Act III Broadcasting agreed to buy WNYB, but instead of building it up, Act III bought WUTV as well and consolidated: the Fox affiliation and WNYB's stronger programming moved to channel 29 in July 1990, and channel 49 was sold to Tri-State Christian Television. Under TCT the station aired full-time religious programming from 1990 to 1996, a quiet interlude in which the former Fox affiliate left the entertainment business entirely.

Reinvention as WNYO-TV and The WB

Channel 49 returned to general entertainment in 1996 through a swap of assets. Grant Broadcasting, which held the licence of Jamestown-area channel 26, negotiated an exchange with Tri-State Christian Television: Grant took over channel 49, while TCT took the channel 26 licence, cash and a new, more powerful broadcasting facility. On January 10, 1997, TCT moved the WNYB intellectual unit to channel 26, and channel 49 emerged under Grant as WB affiliate WNYO-TV, its new call sign proclaiming its Western New York and Ontario service area. As a WB station from 1996 to 2006, WNYO carried the network's prime-time and Kids' WB children's programming, filling the rest of the schedule with syndicated shows and movies. Sinclair Broadcast Group acquired the station in 2001, pairing it with WUTV and restoring — under one owner — the channel 29 and channel 49 combination that the 1990 consolidation had created in programming terms.

MyNetworkTV and the Independent Blend

The station's network identity changed again in 2006, when CBS Corporation and Time Warner announced on January 24 that The WB and UPN would close and merge into The CW. Buffalo's CW affiliation went to WNLO, not WNYO. On February 22, News Corporation announced MyNetworkTV, a service operated by Fox Television Stations and Twentieth Television to give former WB and UPN stations an alternative to independence. WNYO-TV took that path, affiliating with MyNetworkTV at its launch on September 5, 2006, and it has kept the affiliation since. In current listings the station is best described as an independent station with MyNetworkTV programming: the MyNetworkTV prime-time block sits inside a broader schedule of syndicated entertainment, court and talk shows, movies and Sinclair-supplied national programs such as The National Desk, Full Measure with Sharyl Attkisson and The Armstrong Williams Show.

News on Channel 49: News Central and the WGRZ Years

Although never a full news station, channel 49 carried a 10 p.m. newscast for much of the 2000s and 2010s. Competition at 10 p.m. arrived on WNYO in 2004 with a hybrid local–national newscast built on Sinclair's News Central format, which combined local segments with centrally produced national content; the station then had the smallest local news staff of any Buffalo television newsroom. When News Central shut down, Sinclair announced on April 13, 2006, that Gannett's NBC affiliate WGRZ would produce a weeknight prime-time newscast for WNYO under a news share agreement. The program premiered on April 20, 2006, as 2 News on 49, 10 at 10, later retitled Channel 2 News at 10, originating from WGRZ's downtown Buffalo studios. It opened with ten minutes of news and weather followed by a sports segment, The Sports Zone, which low ratings later shrank; a 2011 reformat as 10 at 10 counted the day's top stories upward from tenth to first. The newscast consistently trailed the WIVB-produced 10 p.m. news on WNLO. On April 8, 2013, the WGRZ 10 p.m. production moved from WNYO to the stronger Fox lead-ins of sister station WUTV, leaving channel 49 with a rebroadcast of WGRZ's morning news hour in place of prime-time news.

Subchannels and the Move of Its Signal

WNYO-TV's digital lineup has evolved with Sinclair's diginet portfolio. Earlier configurations carried TheCoolTV on 49.2 until September 2012, followed by the American Sports Network and Stadium services. In the current NextGen TV arrangement, WNYO's ATSC 1.0 channels are hosted across the multiplexes of other Buffalo stations: the main 49.1 MyTV Buffalo service in 720p is carried on WUTV's signal, 49.2 carries The Nest via WKBW-TV, 49.3 carries Comet via WGRZ, and 49.4 carries GetTV via WIVB-TV. The station ended analog broadcasting on UHF channel 49 on June 12, 2009, the national transition date; its digital signal, which had used channel 34 before the transition, moved to channel 49, and later to channel 16 in the spectrum repack era, while its transmitter is located on Whitehaven Road in Grand Island.

Buffalo's NextGen TV Lighthouse

On March 22, 2021, WNYO-TV converted to become Buffalo's ATSC 3.0 lighthouse station, the host transmitter for the market's NextGen TV service. In that role its signal carries the ATSC 3.0 versions of itself and Buffalo's Big Four affiliates — WGRZ (NBC), WIVB-TV (CBS), WKBW-TV (ABC) and WUTV (Fox) — along with additional streamed and data services. In exchange, as described above, its own ATSC 1.0 channels are distributed on the signals of its partner stations, so legacy receivers continue to find MyTV Buffalo at virtual channel 49. The arrangement gives this much-travelled entertainment station an outsized technical importance: every NextGen TV viewer in the Buffalo market depends on channel 49's transmitter, whatever station they are watching.

Canadian Availability

Like its sister station, WNYO-TV reaches into Canada. It is the MyNetworkTV affiliate carried on the digital tiers of cable providers in Canadian markets that take Buffalo stations, including Toronto, and it is also available in Kingston, Brockville, Cornwall and Ottawa via a fibre-optic line. One gap illustrates the economics of cross-border carriage: neither WNYO nor any other MyNetworkTV affiliate is carried in portions of Cattaraugus County, New York, served by a cable operator that balked at financial demands despite must-carry considerations, leaving that corner of the home state without the service available across Ontario.

Ownership and Operations Today

WNYO-TV is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, licensed to New York Television, Inc., and operated from the shared Hertel Avenue facility with WUTV. Its website is mytvbuffalo.com. Technical summaries list the station at 575 kW effective radiated power with an antenna height of about 329 metres in its current configuration, under FCC facility ID 67784. Within the duopoly, channel 49 plays the complementary role: where WUTV carries a major network and sports, WNYO offers an alternative prime-time service, a deep bench of syndicated and diginet programming, and the market's NextGen TV transmission plant.

Place in the Buffalo Market

Few American stations have worn as many identities as channel 49 in Buffalo: TVX independent, Sabres-owned Fox affiliate, religious broadcaster, WB station, MyNetworkTV outlet and NextGen lighthouse. Each change tracked a national industry shift — the rise of Fox, the WB–UPN era and its CW settlement, the economics of duopoly, and the ATSC 3.0 transition. As MyTV Buffalo, WNYO-TV remains a familiar part of the dial for viewers in western New York and southern Ontario alike, and its transmitter quietly carries the future of television for the entire market.
