World Fashion Channel
World Fashion Channel is an international satellite and cable television channel devoted to fashion, beauty, travel, lifestyle and celebrity coverage. Launched in 2005, it broadcasts around the clock in two versions — a Russian-language version for Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States, and an international English-language version for the rest of the world — from headquarters associated with Milan in Italy and Moscow in Russia. Its schedules are built from fashion news, reports from the major fashion weeks, documentaries about designers and recordings of leading fashion shows, much of it the channel's own production. Distributed by satellite across Europe, including to viewers in the United Kingdom, as well as through cable packages and online streaming, World Fashion Channel is one of the small group of dedicated fashion channels that emerged in the 2000s to serve a global audience for the fashion industry.
History and launch
The channel was founded in 2003 and began broadcasting on 15 June 2005 from the Hot Bird satellite platform, the European satellite position from which its international signal could reach audiences across the continent. Launching from Hot Bird placed World Fashion Channel in the free-to-air and pay satellite environment in which specialist channels of the period built their audiences: a single satellite feed, receivable from London to Moscow, carrying one subject — in this case the fashion world — twenty-four hours a day. The choice of twin bases in Milan, one of the four established capitals of the fashion industry, and Moscow reflected the channel's two natural markets from the outset: the Western European fashion system and the rapidly growing Russian and post-Soviet audience for luxury and lifestyle media. Broadcasting reference sources list its countries as the United States, Italy and Russia, its languages as English, Italian and Russian, and its picture format as 1080i high definition.
Ownership
Reference listings name the channel's owners as Igor Kesaev and Marina Artemieva. Kesaev, a Russian businessman whose interests were centred on the Mercury group of companies, became the channel's one hundred per cent shareholder in 2012, and channel listings have associated the service with the Mercury group. Corporate reporting published many years later described the Italy-based World Fashion Channel Europe as part of the network of companies linked to Kesaev, and recorded that in May 2022, a month after Kesaev was designated under European Union sanctions, the sole administrator of the channel's parent company took over his hundred per cent stake in that parent, with control later passing to a foundation connected to his associates. The channel itself continued to broadcast and to distribute its international feed throughout this period of corporate change, and its public identity — the WFC brand and its website at wfc.tv — remained unchanged.
Two versions: Russian and international
World Fashion Channel's most distinctive structural feature is that it exists as two parallel channels. The Russian version, in which all content is translated into Russian, covers Russia and the CIS countries. The international version, broadcast in English, covers Europe, Asia and the Asia-Pacific region, Australia, the Americas, Canada, the Middle East and the Baltic states, as well as Russia and the CIS. Both versions broadcast twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Audience figures published in channel descriptions put the Russian version at more than 20.25 million viewers and the international version at more than 18.5 million; later promotional material issued with distribution partners raised those claims, crediting the international version with more than 23 million viewers, the Russian version with more than 30 million, and the channel overall with more than 50 million viewers worldwide. Such figures are the channel's own promotional claims rather than independently audited ratings, but they indicate the scale of carriage the service achieved across satellite and cable systems.
Programming
The channel's content consists of the latest news and events of the fashion world, seasonal trends, reports from the main fashion weeks, documentaries about designers and the best fashion shows. Its crews work at the New York, London, Paris and Milan fashion weeks, the four fixtures that anchor the international fashion calendar, and it takes part in other leading events of the fashion world. Channel descriptions state that some ninety per cent of its airtime is unique, originally produced content, supported by material on the channel's web resources and those of its partners. World Fashion Channel also acts as a media partner at international film premieres, music festivals and leading fashion events, and its online video output shows the breadth of its coverage, from Paris Fashion Week collections to bridal fashion weeks and advertising campaign features. The channel adopted the slogan "Worldwide Fashion Reference", expressing its ambition to be a first point of reference for viewers following contemporary trends in fashion, beauty, travel and lifestyle.
The 2018 relaunch and new media format
In 2018 the channel underwent a significant change of direction. Kirill Bondarenko was appointed general producer, and under its new leadership World Fashion Channel adopted what it called a New Media format: it presented itself no longer as a television channel alone, but as a media brand whose programmes were available live through a refreshed website, which published daily videos, news and articles on fashion, beauty and celebrity life, while its social network presence was rebuilt around tests, polls, live broadcasts and video made specifically for its online platforms. A slate of new projects launched on the channel in 2018 illustrated the broader remit: World Fashion Holidays, combining filming with business networking for people developing fashion businesses; New Model Show, a reality series following young women from different parts of Russia as they became professional models; Business Style, in which the presenter and experts discussed how to dress, work and rest in pursuit of a successful career; Kids Fashion News, described as the first children's fashion programme, exploring the world of children's fashion weeks and young models; and Fashion Calendar WFC, filmed in different parts of the world with established models taking part.
Distribution
Distribution has always been central to World Fashion Channel's model. The Russian version's signal has been distributed through the ABS 2 satellite and the NTV Plus platform, and carried in the basic and digital packages of major Russian operators including Rostelecom, NTV Plus, MTS, Akado Telecom, Dom.Ru, TTK and Vimpelcom. For the international version, the channel announced that from 2019 its signal would be available via the HotBird 13C satellite with coverage of some 135 million households across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa — the footprint that brought the English-language service to satellite households in the United Kingdom. The channel is also available through smart television technologies, Apple TV and applications for iOS and Android, and streams live through its own website. Satellite carriage specialists have continued to handle its distribution in later years; the broadcast services company iKO Media Group publicised its work launching the channel to audiences as part of its portfolio of international networks.
World Fashion Luxury Awards
Beyond broadcasting, World Fashion Channel established the World Fashion Luxury Awards, created to celebrate the achievements of premium-segment brands. The awards extended the channel's role from reporting on the luxury industry to participating in it, positioning the WFC brand alongside the fashion houses, beauty companies and lifestyle businesses its programmes cover. Together with its work as a media partner at film premieres, festivals and fashion events, the awards form part of a strategy in which the television channel is the centre of a wider promotional and events business aimed at the same audience.
Place among fashion channels
World Fashion Channel developed alongside, and in competition with, FashionTV, the French-founded fashion channel launched in 1997 that pioneered the format of continuous catwalk and lifestyle coverage distributed across Europe. Where FashionTV was built from Paris, World Fashion Channel's identity combined Milan with Moscow, and its bilingual Russian-and-international structure gave it a particular strength in the Russian-speaking market that its rival did not match in the same way. Its survival from the satellite era into the streaming era — the 2018 New Media relaunch, its applications and smart television presence, and its continuing satellite feeds — reflects the wider adaptation of specialist channels to a market in which fashion content is now consumed as much on phones and websites as on television. For viewers in Britain, it remained one of the international satellite services through which the fashion weeks of New York, London, Paris and Milan could be followed as continuous television rather than as occasional news coverage.
