About WPVI-TV

WPVI-TV, channel 6, is the ABC owned-and-operated television station licensed to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, branded on air as 6abc and Channel 6 Action News. Owned by the ABC Owned Television Stations division of The Walt Disney Company, it is the Delaware Valley's leading news station and one of the heritage outlets of American broadcasting. The station signed on in September 1947 as WFIL-TV, owned by the publisher of the Philadelphia Inquirer, and it became the ABC television network's first affiliate before the network's own flagship station had even signed on. From its landmark circular studios on City Avenue, 6abc has delivered Action News to Philadelphia for more than five decades.

WFIL-TV: the Triangle Publications years

Philadelphia's second-oldest television station signed on the air in September 1947 as WFIL-TV. It was owned originally by Triangle Publications, the publishing empire of Walter Annenberg that included the Philadelphia Inquirer, along with WFIL radio on 560 AM and WFIL-FM. WFIL radio had been an ABC radio affiliate dating back to ABC's days as the Blue Network, but WFIL-TV started out as a DuMont Television Network affiliate, since ABC had not yet entered television. When ABC launched its television network on April 19, 1948, WFIL-TV became the fledgling network's first affiliate, joining ABC before the network's first owned-and-operated station, WJZ-TV in New York, signed on in August. Channel 6 retained a secondary affiliation with DuMont until that network shut down in 1956.

The WFIL stations were the flagship of Annenberg's growing communications empire, which encompassed two Philadelphia newspapers, the morning Inquirer and later the evening Philadelphia Daily News, magazines including TV Guide, Seventeen, and the Daily Racing Form, and a broadcasting group that would grow to ten radio and six television stations. The WFIL radio stations originally broadcast from the Widener Building in downtown Philadelphia before Triangle secured larger facilities as television arrived.

The City Avenue broadcast center

In 1963, Triangle built one of the most advanced broadcast centers in the nation on City Avenue, also known as City Line Avenue, in the Wynnefield Heights section of Philadelphia: a distinctive circular building across the street from rival WCAU-TV. The station still broadcasts from 4100 City Avenue today, though a newer digital media building now houses Action News and other original productions, while the original round studio was turned over to public broadcaster WHYY. The City Avenue corridor has long been synonymous with Philadelphia television, and the 6abc building remains its most recognizable landmark.

Capital Cities and the WPVI call sign

On April 27, 1971, Capital Cities Communications purchased the station from Triangle Publications as part of Triangle's exit from broadcasting, and the call letters were changed to WPVI-TV. The new calls stood for Philadelphia and the Roman numeral for six, VI, a clever encoding of the station's channel number into its legal identity. Under Capital Cities, the station's news operation was transformed by the introduction of the Action News format, which would define Philadelphia television news for generations.

Action News: a Philadelphia institution

The Action News format, with its rapid pace, punchy presentation, and memorable musical theme, was developed for the station in 1970 and became one of the most successful local news brands in American television history. The format's energy matched the personality of Philadelphia itself, and Channel 6 Action News surged to the top of the local ratings, a position it has largely held ever since. The station's slogan, The Delaware Valley's Leading News Program, reflects a dominance built over decades of consistent performance in morning, evening, and late-night newscasts.

Generations of Action News anchors, reporters, meteorologists, and sportscasters have become beloved figures across southeastern Pennsylvania, South Jersey, and Delaware. The station's coverage of Philadelphia's great civic moments, from championship parades to papal visits, has been the shared experience of the region, and its breaking-news coverage has repeatedly set the standard for the market.

Becoming an ABC owned-and-operated station

In 1986, Capital Cities completed its acquisition of the ABC network, making WPVI-TV an ABC owned-and-operated station. The transaction united channel 6 with the network it had served as an affiliate since 1948, closing a circle that began when WFIL-TV became ABC's first television affiliate. In 1996, The Walt Disney Company acquired Capital Cities/ABC, bringing the station under Disney ownership. As an O&O, 6abc operates with the resources and standards of the ABC Owned Television Stations group while maintaining the fiercely local identity that Philadelphia viewers expect.

The news operation

Channel 6 Action News airs across morning, midday, evening, and late-night dayparts, with one of the largest local news staffs in the country. The newsroom covers Philadelphia and its suburbs, South Jersey, and Delaware, a tri-state region of more than six million people. Its reporting spans City Hall and Harrisburg and Trenton politics, the region's eds-and-meds economy, public safety, education, and the passionate sports culture of a city whose fans are famous nationwide. The station's investigative unit and its consumer advocacy reporting continue the watchdog tradition that has long distinguished Philadelphia journalism.

Technical information

WPVI-TV broadcasts on digital VHF channel 6, displayed to tuners on virtual channel 6, with an effective radiated power of 45 kilowatts and a tower height above average terrain of 342 meters, or about 1,122 feet. Its transmitter is located in Philadelphia's Roxborough neighborhood, the mountaintop tower farm that serves the market's major stations. The station's facility ID with the FCC is 8616. It broadcast on analog channel 6 from 1947 until the digital transition in 2009, using UHF channel 64 for its digital signal from 1998 to 2009.

Signal and market reach

The station's signal covers the Delaware Valley, comprising large portions of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, one of the largest television markets in the United States. Philadelphia is the nation's fourth-largest television market, and 6abc's over-the-air signal, combined with cable, satellite, and streaming distribution, reaches millions of households across the tri-state area. The station's newscasts consistently rank among the highest-rated local newscasts in the country relative to market size.

Community involvement

6abc maintains a deep community presence through partnerships with Philadelphia-area schools, charities, and civic organizations. The station's annual Thanksgiving Day Parade coverage is a beloved local tradition, and its journalists are familiar faces at community events across the Delaware Valley. The station supports fundraising drives, educational initiatives, and public awareness campaigns, reflecting a commitment to the region that extends beyond the newscast. Its public affairs programming addresses issues of importance to the area's diverse neighborhoods, from North Philadelphia to the Jersey Shore.

The station also partners with regional food banks, children's hospitals, and educational foundations on signature campaigns that mobilize viewers across the Delaware Valley, and its on-air personalities regularly host and emcee the region's major civic celebrations.

Digital presence

The station's digital home is 6abc.com, one of the most-visited local news websites in the Philadelphia region, offering breaking news, live streaming newscasts, weather coverage, and video on demand. Its mobile app and social media channels reach millions of followers, with push alerts for breaking news and severe weather across the Delaware Valley. As part of the ABC Owned Television Stations group, the station streams its newscasts on the group's digital platforms. After more than 75 years on the air, from WFIL-TV to 6abc, the station remains Philadelphia's leading source for local news.
